70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

We strongly oppose the introduction of the international student levy. It suggests a lack of understanding of the financial pressure on higher education. It is estimated that a single cohort of international students provides up to £37 billion net contribution to the UK already

I guess we should be grateful that we aren't yet required to watch it and applaud.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pentagon says the firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be livestreamed in December. Just find myself muttering variations of "this can't be real" over and over again.

Something unprecedented happened during my visit to the Gulf. For the first time in 20 years in Congress, I was denied entry to U.S. military facilities and even meetings with military leaders. An order from Hegseth - that applies to both parties - to hide the cost of the war.

When you get off the bus it's customary to say to the driver "You appeared to me in my dream as a shimmering resplendent tower of light and in that moment I knew that everything was going to be okay"

So basically tech oligarchs keep announcing they've successfully built a paperclip maximiser and demanding we devote all our money to funding it and all our energy to passing laws to stop it.

to be clear, the admin is alleged to have deported AT LEAST 25,447 individuals TO COUNTRIES THAT ARE NOT THEIR OWN with, evidently, ZERO PROTECTIONS. this is a scandal and crime of historic proportions.

the @forbidden-stories.bsky.social investigation is so deeply important. put the illegality to one side. the trump admin is brazenly sending ppl to third countries, lacking any cxn, without any guarantee they won't be sent on for torture, abuse, persecution... it's horrible.

Saw a woman on the train last night with the word DINOSAUR tattooed on her knuckles. She also had a lot of facial tattoos and a thousand-yard stare, like she might have really punched a few dinosaurs in her time.

I mean, this probably means time travel is real and people are travelling to the Jurassic to fight dinosaurs. It's possible our whole civilization depends on these secret warriors.

The driver’s behavior before and after the crash is sociopathic. But also, no car operated on public roads should be able to go 100 mph, much less 142 mph.

If the government gives everyone a $5k check, what they're really doing is requiring everyone to take out a $5k loan, which we will all have to repay, with no control over how or when we pay it, and no guarantee about the interest rate.

Fun fact: in our polling of battleground states, about 60% of voters said it is a “top” or “high” priority for Congress to investigate and hold Musk accountable. Lean into it Dems. He’s a cartoon villain - treat him like one.

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

Musk is already underwater in polls and if Democrats lean in they can make him even more toxic. He's declared open war on you all and is pushing a toxic, destructive, racist agenda. Maybe it's time to push back? I don't know, I'm just spitballing here.

I keep thinking about a thing Isak Dinesen wrote about how, when the British came to Kenya and wanted the Kikuyu to get identity cards, the Kikuyu wouldn't do it because it was boring.

This sticks with me partly because this species of boringness has devoured so much of our lives. Modern people are trained in childhood to submit to being bored by power. And generally, when someone is boring you, they're not to be trusted.

But also, the story is probably apocryphal. At best, it's a thing one person said to Dinesen, which might have really been a reaction to being asked a stupid question. I.e. it might have really meant, "You're boring."

Once again, the implicit assumption of nearly every argument for “AI in the classroom” is that the real subject of every course must be (the benefits or shortcomings of) AI

Dale Chapman 🍁@decmusicology.bsky.social

This argument is all over the place I honestly don't know what he's saying here. Is he saying that students should engage with AI... to learn of its shortcomings... which consist of all kinds of nuanced critical thinking and problem solving... that we could just fucking develop *without* the AI?

Flew into London today, and I could see from the plane that the grass in parks all over the city was yellow and dead. Later I went out in a park and when I touched a flower it was so dry and brittle I could crumble it in my hand. We are really not prepared for how fast this is happening.
