My far less interesting Gere elevator story: we were waiting for a trip down to the lobby of the L.A. Four Seasons. They were down a car. We waited and waited and waited. A frustrated Gere finally picked up the courtesy phone and, *ding*, our chariot arrived. He looked at me and said, "That worked!"

This is a terrible loss. Ann wrote for a mainstream outlet, but she knew the medium and made a case for oddities. I loved her appearances on THE TONY KORNHEISER SHOW. She adored movies. I disagreed vehemently with her at times, but that's what cinephiles do. Eternal respect.

I was lucky to get to know Ann through her love and support of Silverdocs. She was the rare national film critic who understood and championed creative nonfiction. She loved talking documentary and the Iowa State Fair. She was smart and she was kind. This is truly devastating.

NES or a rented VHS movie, then SLEDGE HAMMER! (with guest star Brion James) at 10:30, baby! ARSENIO's a repeat, so probably CAROLINE'S COMEDY HOUR at 11.

Sunday night January 13th, 1991: what would you watch?

Meta took down the No Kings instagram; TikTok banned the Musk documentary account for supposedly violating its political posting policies. A reminder that platforms are owned by the wealthiest of people, control the means of media distribution, & put their thumbs on the democracy scale as they wish

We are literally a Russian satellite state.

Jonathan McDowell@planet4589.bsky.social

This afternoon's orbital data suggests - subject to confirmation - that Russia's Kosmos-2612 has carried out a rendezvous with the US ICEYE X36 radar sat, within a few km. To my knowledge this is the first LEO rendezvous of two active sats where the owner of one of the sats did not give approval.

Fresh out of college, I was put on a desk at William Morris in NYC. Aced the interview, but I had no idea how to roll calls or use a copier. The floaters resented me. Dropped a call with Harry Belafonte. Lasted less than a month.

I really needed YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING. I've been so down, and while this isn't an uplifting movie, this film buoyed my belief in the medium. Nathan Fielder is a godsend.

I can't pin him down. Satirist, prankster, documentarian... dunno. Most valuable non-fiction artist working today? Wiseman's dead, so why not Fielder?

Amazing audience movie. Lots of chatter in a good way, And everyone knew when to shut up. A front-to-back masterpiece.

Patrick Monahan@pattymo.com

Weird to say for a doc but gotta see it in a packed theater if you can. Audience reactions immensely add to the experience

Do not read a single review until you've seen YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING for yourself. And watch it ASAP. If they won't teach media literacy in schools, we can at least have this.

Her "immigration status" is that she's been a US citizen longer than either Melania Trump or Elon Musk. The Democrats SHOULD use this opportunity for 100% solidarity with one of their own, and throw the fucking kitchen sink at Trump and his Republicans. I doubt they will but would LOVE to be wrong.

BREAKING: Justice Department issues subpoenas in investigation into progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar’s immigration status, including to members of her family.

Absent the nuclear codes (which he may now have access to), he is the most dangerous person alive. People told me I was crazy to say this up to the 2024 election. I don't care about being right. I care about bringing him to justice.

Elon Musk is one of the most dangerous people in the world. Twitter is a right wing propaganda tool. There are far too many folks out there pretending otherwise.

I guess some people aren't digging Gerwig's NARNIA trailer? I'm not a Lewis guy, but I think it looks spectacular (and kinda trippy for a kids movie, which is the assignment).

Can you will a largely despised film into awards contention? One that audiences and critics rejected alike? DIGGER is presenting itself as a test case, and it's shaping up to be the MAGA movie of our era. It's a film that lampoons concern about climate change and rips politically charged art.

The deal with DIGGER is that Iñàrritu doesn't give a shit. He's a provocateur without a cause. He just wants to direct Cruise to an Oscar, and flaunt his filmmaking chops (which, buddy, you're second-tier at best). Actors adore him, but he's a lightweight.

Why stop there? Maybe Margaret White is just a great, concerned mom. Maybe Carrie learns how to use her powers for good. Maybe the prom goes great. Maybe this is all about empowerment and agency. Maybe we call it Bewitched.

The support-the-troops contingent only want to exploit and kill our service people. They hate our country.

Hegseth got the job not because of his clown antics on Fox News but because during the first term he made it his personal crusade to get Trump to pardon war criminals who had murdered civilians and desecrated corpses. That’s who he is and it’s what Trump hired him to be.

i am genuinely shocked by the psychotic bloodthirst on display with hegseth

I don't know why Spielberg backed Zaslav. I'd love to talk to him about it. Spielberg is one of my heroes. He miscalculated, and the industry is now speed-running toward ruin. His last act must be one of industry salvation. There's no way he doesn't care.
