Even the #FinancialTimes is getting in on the #Don'tGrowHeathrow act. It says "the need for giant hubs is being challenged by the rise of long-range narrow-body planes that go to places their bigger predecessors couldn’t" & describes the 0.05% GDP as a rounding error

We got very excited when we saw this headline but sadly @andyburnham.bsky.social isn't ruling it out either. Still it's a step in the right direction. Contrary to #Heathrow's spin we are confident that Londoners don't want more noise, pollution and congestion.

Best not bother then.
Push the economy towards renewables and properly sustainable transport instead.

Any decision to allow #Heathrow expansion would mean waving goodbye to the UK's climate credibility. Relying on unproven & expensive mitigations would push up flight costs & choke off the very demand that expansion is supposed to meet. Well said @thecccuk.bsky.socialwww.ft.com/content/a8cd...
Experts at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the UK aren't overly keen on #Heathrow expansion & say aviation "growth must be managed to ensure that the benefits continue to outweigh the impacts"

It's hard to put a price on health problems, sleepless nights and shattered communities, but compensation of £3000 for having your lives ruined is clearly grossly inadequate. www.mylondon.news/news/west-lo...
#Heathrow claims expansion would create jobs. But it risks crowding out other jobs as local businesses are unable to compete with them for staff & premises. The dangers of a local jobs monoculture were clearly exposed by Covid, with areas around the airport particularly badly hit. #No3rdRunway
Sorry if we sound like a scratched record on this but the consultation on #Heathrow expansion closes tomorrow (1st September) at 11.59pm. If you've been meaning to respond but haven't got round to it, now is the time. Even emailing a few sentences is better than nothing.

As if the noise, pollution, congestion & climate impact weren't enough, here's yet another reason to oppose #Heathrow expansion www.theguardian.com/environment/... The consultation closes tomorrow - please respond. See our previous posts for how to do that.
Just finalising our response to the consultation on #Heathrow expansion (HENPS). The more we plough through the vast quantity of consultation papers, the more it's clear that the DfT's own numbers don't support the case for expansion. It's like whoever wrote the conclusion didn't read the papers!
Listening to birdsong is good for us. Traffic noise is not. Reducing traffic speed turns down the volume and benefits us + nature
“Researchers found that even low levels of traffic noise negatively affected the benefits to wellbeing that could otherwise be derived from listening to natural sounds.”
Just over a week to go until the consultation on #Heathrow expansion closes. Our guide to responding is on our website here: hacan.org.uk Please join us to let the government know you don't want more planes, noise, congestion, pollution and emissions.
It would be a tragedy if government plans to allow #Heathrow to expand set back progress on #London's#AirQuality then. Surely we should value children's health above the uncertain possibility of a miniscule increase in GDP by 2050.
#Don'tGrowHeathrow#No3rdRunway
Great news: research shows that "an ambitious #CleanAir zone can drive pollution levels down, rapidly restoring children's stunted lung growth". London's #ULEZ has helped London's children's lungs recover. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Labour's 4 tests. Test 4: #EconomicGrowth. The DfT’s own numbers say #Heathrow expansion would result in just 0.05% additional GDP, many years in the future. Surely not worth it given the huge social and #environmental costs?
Verdict: More work needed on the mathematics! #No3rdRunway
Labour's 4 tests. Test 3: #Noise. #Heathrow expansion would mean nearly 1 million more people affected by aircraft noise, & so more likely to suffer from high blood pressure (even when asleep), reduced wellbeing and heart problems.. Result: Either test not met or bar not set high enough!
Labour's 4 tests. Test 2: #AirQuality. #Heathrow expansion would increase pollution in an area that already fails to meet WHO guidelines & risk reversing recent improvements in London’s #AirQuality. The WHO says that pollution limits above its guidelines pose a risk to health. Result: Fail!
Labour's 4 tests. Test 1: #Climate. #Heathrow expansion would mean aviation emissions above the levels recommended by the government’s own advisors, and would mean other sectors (often in the North or Midlands) would have to bear more of the burden of meeting our net zero goals. Test not met!
Labour have previously said #Heathrow would need to meet 4 tests to be allowed to expand: #climate; economic growth; air quality; noise; Over the next 4 days we will look at each of these and assess whether the #airport could meet them. Spoiler alert: we don't think they can!!
It's hard to see how a #3rdRunway is in the UK's national interest when: #Heathrow is 100% owned by overseas investors; overseas transfer passengers are expected to take 75% of new capacity; UK taxpayers are likely to pick up the bill for transport upgrades and the health impacts. #NoThirdRunway
“Air pollution is causing people in the UK to get chronic illnesses like dementia and Parkinson’s earlier, a new study has found.”

Yesterday the Court began hearing challenges to Gatwick Airport expansion brought by @CAGNE_Gatwick and a local resident working with @GCgatwick.
AEF supports our member groups prioritising environment & community health over unmitigated growth. 1/3
If true, this is a terrible mistake, especially with the prospect that solar panels would be optional. The failure to have a clear vision and get the basics right is demoralising and irresponsible. No wonder the young people I teach feel angry at politicians on climate change action.
Great visualisation from ITV using AEF’s analysis of recent figures from @thecccuk.bsky.social, which show that demand can be met by current airport capacity, without need for airport expansion.

While private jets are a problem - they’re only a small part of the problem (3% of aviation emissions).
International aviation carbon dioxide emissions totaled 492 million metric tons (MtCO₂) in 2023.
Of which private jets accounted for 15.6 of the 492.
