Sunday I told you it was anniversary of, in 1941, Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., becoming first Black general officer ever in the US Army. OTD in 1954, Davis's son, Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., became the first Black general officer in the US Air Force (which was the Army Air Corps until 1947). Image: USAF.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Coming to New Orleans for the American Historical Association Annual Meeting this January? Make your trip unforgettable with the George C. Marshall Lecture at The National WWII Museum!

This entire album hits hard. Might be one of their best. I hadn’t heard most of these songs until their show a couple weeks ago. Daily play since then. Marrow Deep 🤘 #Mastodon

“Things are different now, things are different now, things are different now” I repeat as I acknowledge my inner voice, chastising me for wasting my undergrad time, while I submit my PhD applications. Changed behavior is a great amends and remembering how poorly I behaved stings. I’ll get there.

Temple University Press is now exhibiting at the Pennsylvania Historical Association annual meeting at Northampton Community College, 3835 Green Pond Road in Bethlehem, PA. Daniel Richter, author of NATIVE AMERICANS AND PENNSYLVANIA, will discuss his book at the October 23 luncheon.

39/2026 1984 by George Orwell I gasped when the mic spoke up to Winston and Julia. “You are the dead.” I see it as a treatise on how easy it is to get away with torture and societal control. O’Brien is the monster. Can’t reduce this book to doublespeak or crimestop. Big Brother is a mcguffin.

38/2026 Guide to Methods for Students of Political Science by Stephen Van Evera A short book that packs a punch. Learned a lot about case studies and arrow diagrams. It’s all part of determining what story I want my dissertation to tell and how I want to tell it. Glad ASP3 required this reading.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

37/2026 The Master & Margarita by Mikhaïl Bulgakov Good grief… I had the hardest time understanding this and yet this was the book I picked up every night before bed.
