I hope to hell Wildwood is actually good and not like every other Laika thing that gets praised to the rooftops by a tiny handful of people that gets forgotten about 5 minutes later, and then when I finally check it out years later, it turns out to be beautifully-constructed-but-narratively-inert.

At least up until now, Laika has been the animation studio equivalent of one of those fantastic online illustrators who is incredible at drawing posters and comic covers but is terrible at writing a comic.

(As a professional fan of TOYS, god knows I don’t have a fundamental problem with narratively-inert-but-beautiful movies, but it would be nice if Laika didn’t have to limp from project to project on the good graces of a failed nepo baby Vanilla Ice.)

The fact that we've agreed to call these gambling sites "prediction markets" furthers their bullshit. They predict nothing and it's a disgrace that news orgs have partnered with them and pretend they have news value. THEY'RE JUST A BUNCHA LOSERS GAMBLING.

Jenny Cohn@jennycohn.bsky.social

How pathetic. This pro-Bolsonaro Brazilian official relied on the Thiel-backed prediction market (Polymarket) to suggest that Flavio Bolsonaro had won his debate against President Lulu (who just defeated Bolsonaro in the election.) Because Polymarjet is “real” info. 🙄 1/ x.com/delegadorama...

Speaking of the onrush of nerd stuff coming out for the holidays, I picked up the new hardback shooting script of Back to the Future (annotated by Bob Gale). Pretty nifty.

In honor of the passing of the great Walter Koenig, please enjoy this clip from The 1987 Fangoria Weekend of Horrors convention VHS featuring Walter Koenig and his son Andrew (who we all knew and loved as Boner on Growing Pains) attending the con.

Speaking of Mass Effect, this is just Dirtbag Mass Effect. Maybe the only MCU-adjacent game good enough to overcome the “We have Marvel at home” nature of the bobo-MCU character designs.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was released 5 years ago today, and you shouldn't miss this game. It doesn't take place in the MCU, and it's one of my favorite space adventures in video games in recent years. The proof is that I'm still enthusiastically recommending this game five years later.

The hottest pop culture punchline of (checks the calendar) 3 years ago (but hey, at least Jenny is getting paid).

The Simpsons are exploring the abandoned Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser in a new episode titled "The Kosmic Kruiser" Bart and Lisa will "break into Krustyland's most notorious failed attraction", and Jenny Nicholson will voice a character 🔗 blogmickey.com/2026/10/simp...

Can’t wait to hear elderly Lisa and Bart joke about Disney ruining Star Wars, in between tired-sounding Simpsons shorts promoting Avengers: Doomsday and Star Wars: Starfighter.

It’s taken a few decades, but I’m glad that consumers have gotten better about recognizing that the games they love are made by very specific combinations of people that are more important than any whole studio, much less the giant corporate publisher that puts the game out.

Good take by @shepardcdr.bsky.social. What we've really lost isn't another sequel, it's the reliable opportunity for a creative team to come together and craft an indelible game that you crave more of.

Feels like disasters like Microsoft buying Rare - which people said was the next best thing to buying Nintendo itself - did a lot to highlight how a studio is only as good as the people still working there AND whether or not their corporate overlords will let them cook.

"Where companies like Hershey used to be family owned or shepherded by people with a real stake in the product, they’re increasingly run by people who just like to be in charge of companies."

Star Trek: TNG turns 40 next year, and this is a good reminder (knock on wood) that whole cast is somehow still with us (even Pulaski!):

Meanwhile, most of the cast of, like, Night Court and Buffy haven't made it this far. It's kind of amazing that, including Coach, the cast of Cheers has 'only' lost 2 cast members so far.

I am really mad at this marketing stuff they made for the original Addams Family movie. I get the conceit, that you put your fingers through the holes and pretend you're Thing walkin' around, but if you're able to do that don't you already like, have the rest of your hand, usually?

In 1987, the news program 20/20 did a story about fears around kids watching horror films at home in a segment called, VCR Horror. This report is both an argument between generations about how to perceive genre and an example of moral panic reporting. www.retroist.com/p/vcr-horror...

I remember first encountering this idea when reading an interview with the production designer of Back to the Future (specifically how the 1955 version of Hill Valley was designed and decorated).

That's the bit everyone gets wrong. They try to look like the 80s/90s and they pick whatever was in fashion or what was on TV show sets at that time. Most people lag about a decade behind whatever the furniture and decor trends are because they only buy stuff when they need to replace them.
