On waiting: If you are right, and GenAI really is good for society; If you’re right and GenAI really is the future we want for work; If you’re right and GenAI really is here to stay Then what’s wrong with waiting? If it really is the future, then there’ll be another train. I’m in no hurry.

If you want me to instantly not want to supervise your proposed PhD, send me an AI-generated proposal… There is a world of difference between being able to get AI to produce a proposal that reads like a generic proposal, and actually doing the work for a PhD. Unless, of course, you don’t plan on

doing that work. If you get AI to do your proposal for you then you are telling me a lot about how you might approach your work over the next 4 years. And I’m not interested in supervising people who want to take every short cut available. Doing a PhD isn’t for everyone. Just because AI can

put together something that looks like a research proposal doesn’t mean you can or should do a PhD. And before anyone chimes in with “academics have to accept it’s here to stay”, or “everyone uses it”: I don’t use it. And I don’t accept that LLMs in their current form are here to stay.

Got an email today from a Chinese company that claims to help scholars place papers in appropriate journals, asking if we have an “expedited review process”. They are willing to pay up to $800 for each article successfully through review, but we shouldn’t worry because

They absolutely respect the integrity of our review and editorial process. Yeah, sure, ok! Needless to say my response was to tell them to jog on and take their unethical business practice somewhere else. Grifters gonna grift, I guess…

And this is why you should never cede ground to the far right! You will never be racist or violent enough for them and all it does is normalise them.

The approval of the Jackdaw gas field is an environmental catastrophe. But also, side-eyeing this from an industry which has lost THIRTY THOUSAND JOBS in the past five years, what the absolute fuck is this justification?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

I have had a huge increase in email enquiries about PhD supervision in the last month and most of the emails and proposals read like GenAI products. So, I’m now communicating the following to any prospective PhD supervisees: 1. I will not agree to supervise anyone who uses GenAI to develop or

write their research proposal; 2. When reviewing a proposal I will pay particular attention to the nature of engagement with existing literature; 3. And supervisions during the PhD will - except where registered disability is a factor - be laptop-free discussions. I need to know that you are

able to discuss literature and ideas without the possible intermediary of AI. Has anyone else started implementing anything like this lately? I’d be keen to hear other ideas.

Really tired of this “oh Eussell has been so unlucky” narrative this F1 season. He’s had 2 mechanical DNFs, 1 DNF as a result of a collision and 1 zero points finish because he sped in the pit lane. In only 1 of those was he actually jostling with Kimi for the lead. In the others he was behind Kimi.

Had Russell finished these races in the position he was in when he went out he would have 57 more points. Kimi also had a DNF and was in front of Russell when he retired. So using the same calculation he would have 18 more points. So had these issue not happened Russell would be 45 points behind

Kimi at this point rather than 84. But still behind! The fact is, Kimi has consistently outperformed George across the season. He’s been faster than him. Full stop. #F1

Wow. JFC this is grim. Next time our university admin puts pressure on us to apply for grants my response will be: why would I spend all that time and effort when a person isn’t even going to look at it? I’m sure their response will be: use AI to write the application…

Had a UKRI funded grant proposal rejected at the "AI triage stage". "This AI-based triage was used only to identify approximately 50% of the strongest proposals to take forward to full human review." 🧪 #academicsky

I think once black clad men are interfering with rescues at sea, we are past "legitimate concerns". Once they're attacking boats, and risking the lives of everyone on board, it's just thuggery. The Home Secretary's statement is on the side of criminals. There's no other way to read it.

That’s a hard agree from me. I am genuinely astonished at the number of otherwise sensible commentators who still discuss his latest wild actions as if they’re within the parameters of the normal policy making process.

Joe Walsh@walshfreedom.bsky.social

Oh good lord: we have, for the first time, over 1,000 students enrolled in 1st and 2nd year IR at St Andrews. That’s an insane number. That means that 1 in every 10 students at the University is in 1st or 2nd year International Relations. Utter madness.

OpenAI IPO will not happen in 2026 amid AI safety fears, Sam Altman says Yeah, sure Sam; you’re delaying your IPO over “safety concerns” and not because your f-ing awful finances will prevent you getting the valuation you want… What a piece of work this guy is.

this is exactly what i think the “ai will end humanity” talk coming from silicon valley execs is all about. selling cybersecurity measures to protect you from what they might unleash

Politico@politico.com

EXCLUSIVE: Sam Altman met with top power utilities to discuss ways to secure the electrical grid. He also offered one possible solution to the cybersecurity risks: OpenAI’s own cyber services.

Which a huge difference from the last few seasons in how Chelsea are playing. It’s so good to see us playing positive, attacking football, after years of always looking for a backwards pass, being late to every second ball, and looking generally lost. They’re playing with intent and creativity.

Still work to do, for sure. But Xabi Alonso seems to know how to get more out of these players, and has made some excellent transfer decisions. Emi Martinez is also a great solution in goal. Already taking charge of the box, marshalling the players, giving instructions - things Sanchez never did.

UK media always asks the wrong questions. Instead of hounding high achieving people of colour , perhaps they'd consider asking why white people who fail spectacularly in government so easily walk into high paying media & consultancy work once they’ve exhausted that particular racket .

Since he came back to BlueSky after the AI writing schtick he hasn’t got the engagement needed for the next series of substack posts on how awful the academy is and how he’s the only enlightened one left. Don’t fall for engaging with his nonsense.

Indeed! Shame my department don’t seem to agree. For some unknown reason we have an X account…

Shannon Vallor@shannonvallor.bsky.social

You do not need more reasons to be off X. But at this point, if you are not, you are knowingly supporting the malicious degradation of women everywhere, and we see you.

And by this point do we really think it’s because people lack the ‘skills’ to spot issues, or is it because these tools are for cutting corners - that’s what they’re for! And you’re more likely to use them if you prioritise speed over quality.

www.carlsonlab.bio/thoughts/the... I will be sharing this with my students in a few weeks as part of a document explaining my position on use of GenAI in assignments: not permitted for anything at all. Using LLMs to (help you) write exposes you to a higher risk of committing plagiarism.
