Reading LOTR to my 8 year old. Forgot just how long it takes to get going, a good 100 pages in and that Frodo hasn't even left the house yet. Get off yer hole and out yer hole man!

Hard to believe it's been 10 years since we carried out our excavation at the Hellfire Club. Digging a famously cursed site at Halloween? I was just asking for trouble really, though it's not like anything bad happened since October 2016 right? *flips through history book* Oh, oh no, ohnoohno

Tuatha@tuatha.ie

This year marks the tenth anniversary of our archaeological dig at the Hellfire Club which ended in October 2016, so I thought we might look back on that excavation and what it revealed about the story of the this enigmatic place!

Given the time of year, I thought for this week's edition of our Monument Monday newsletter we might visit one of the places that always comes to mind when we think of haunted and cursed places in Ireland – the infamous Hellfire Club on Montpelier Hill in the Dublin Mountains.

Today it’s magic mushrooms! But not THAT kind. Together with @janetahlberg.bsky.social I have started experimenting with the strange alchemical art of mushroom dyeing and we are beginning to get exciting results. Have a look at this little fellow! This is Cortinarius semisanguineus.

I could spend the rest of my life analysing this feedback sign in the local Home Bargains. Did 'not happy' break from overuse? Was it taped over to ensure 100% positive feedback? Is the green 'b' in 'feedback' some kind of subliminal nudge? Is the duck tape indent because people still keep pressing?

This is one of a number of stone crosses hidden away amongst the trees near the Upper Lake at Glendalough. The crosses once marked the route of a stone causeway that was illustrated on early maps. It is another echo of the extensive pilgrimage landscape that surrounds Glendalough. #Ireland

Very grateful to the wonderful array of experts who have given brilliant talks on everything ranging from Ireland's dinosaurs, to megalithic art, the latest research on Ireland's ancient royal sites, daily life in the early medieval period, the history of witchcraft in Ireland and more!

In an age of AI, real expertise becomes priceless. We started the Tuatha Talk series as we wanted to help to connect the leading experts in Irish archaeology, history and heritage with people who want real information that goes beyond the veneer. #Ireland #SpéirGhorm

It makes me deeply uncomfortable that the Minister for Justice has used his Twitter account to create an online pile on of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre. It also appears to me a dangerous precedent that this minister, and his dept. have instructed the DRCC to remove content that he disapproved of.

St Patricks Graveyard • Mayo Not far from Kilmovee in the east of Mayo near the Roscommon border you can find the remains of a medieval church, set within a historic graveyard that has been in use for centuries. I always find it to be an atmospheric place, where you can feel a deep well of time.

When it comes to archaeological landscapes, there are few places in Ireland that can compare to Rathcroghan, County Roscommon, the ancient royal capital of Connacht. At the centre of this image you can see the enormous earthwork enclosure known as Relignaree (Reilig na Rí – the graveyard of Kings).

Monasterboice • Louth The round tower at Monasterboice served as a bell tower, as well as housing the monastery’s library and other valued objects. Disaster struck in 1097 when the Annals of the Four Masters recorded that the tower, along with all its books and treasures, were burned. #Ireland

The same cancer that squeezes out musicians and artists and writers on our platforms. We're being flooded with slop everywhere, and it's going to have a knock on effect in a few years as we lose creatives whose work got drowned out before they had a chance to develop or find their audience.

It is really easy to do, I think you should be able to do it with just a small flathead screwdriver if you dont have an allen key. It only takes a few minutes.

Glad I posted this now. It looks like quite a few people didn't know about it either, so it wasn't just me being oblivious to the practical world as usual.

recommend Irish followers to watch this clip. look at a map of our infrastructure - all roads lead to Dublin. we still have a colonial extractive economy #speirgorm

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

On Question Time last night, I talked about the extractive economic model that has left Wales - and many other nations - impoverished *because they were so rich in resources*. You can see the problem simply by looking at the map: the infrastructure looks like a drainage system.

Totally agree, each platform has their own blend. I remember getting scolded when I briefly tried Mastodon, that felt like a very walled garden. If I had a chance to develop a school curriculum, I would bring back reading comprehension. So many squabbles online are just down to misread meaning.

Darach Ó Séaghdha@darach.bsky.social

When a post blows up on here or at the bad place, people start to fight with you. But when a post blows up on instagram, they fight each other and it seems to have very little to do with anything you said. Every social media platform is demented in its own particular way.

Reading comprehension twinned with media studies. How to identify whether the author is human or AI, bias and agenda, how to understand meaning without applying your own supposition of tone and intent, how to know when to engage or avoid, platform agenda etc. All skills for life these days!

An Chathair Mhór • Cahermore Stone Fort When it comes to early medieval landscapes, there are few places in Ireland, or indeed anywhere, that can compete with the Burren of County Clare. The relatively low-impact agriculture practised here for centuries has preserved a wealth of monuments.

Spend ages redesigning a major part of the website, get it working AND looking nice and pretty – only to find it is terrible on mobile. A long day ahead. 😩 (not necessarily looking for advice, just a little vent).

It feels like I am spinning a LOT of plates at the moment – archaeology, research, services work, web design and maintenance, developing new content, event planning, marketing, trying to show up on socials, customer service, and that's all before lunch today. My brain is pretty tired.

I totally understand how lucky I am, don't get me wrong. I enjoy variety! It's just one of those moments when I wished I had the time and mental bandwith to really focus long enough to get *good* at something like web design, instead of feeling like I have to relearn it again from scratch
