Exactly how much of taxpayers money is Jim O’Callaghan going to keep wasting trying to look tough in front of FF bankbenchers and Russian Bots on Twitter.. High Court overturns decision to deny Gazan student visa www.rte.ie/news/courts/...

reminds me of a yarn Colm Tóibín told about John McGahern being on a panel in France and some journo berating him for not having political content in his work, given the times of where he lived. Apparently McGahern snootily said 'a writer's job is to mind his sentences'
Does John Banville think artists have a duty to take a stance on moral issues? His stand is apparently for amorality. www.independent.ie/irish-news/s...

Parents of Ireland, what do you do when your kids have reports? Hand them the ipad and let them loose on the open internet? Or dust down the Childcraft? There has to be a better way surely #speirgorm
The thing I find most disturbing about the present moment, as a parent, is that there is no modern equivalent of these. Cannot find a decent kids encyclopedia app. Unless I'm missing something obvious?

Done. You don’t have to be as articulate as Simon. Just let them know that you find it concerning that a minister seems to be taking his marching orders from Twitter and has come out in favour of touching children without their consent www.contactyourtd.ie
I’ve slept on it now and when I woke up, I was still still mad about it. This morning, I’m going to ring the constituent office of my local FF TD and tell him just how mad it made me. Then I’m going to call the constituency office of my local SF TD, and ask if Matt Carthy’s support is their view.

Ireland: There is no place in secure State care for a teenage girl who gardaí believe is being subjected to “horrifying” sexual exploitation by multiple men. Judge wants three Ministers told. Comment: They already know. They just do not see this as important enough to their careers.
The culture that Micheal Martin has created in Fianna Fáil ensures that only the crassest rise to the top
Jim O’Callaghan will tell the Oireachtas Justice Committee that cases of alleged rape are being “deliberately” targeted by the solicitors’ dispute over legal aid. Such cases, before yesterday, could have resulted in a defendant representing themselves and then cross-examining their own complainant.

he could immediately fund more than half of this by scrapping the €150m allocation for "AI upskilling"
Minister for Higher and Further Education James Lawless has said the demand from Irish universities for €250 million to bridge a core funding gap is "significantly in excess" of the previously agreed figure.

re. No One Goes Out anymore - I think it's absolutely correct to point to the pandemic though I'd argue it was only ever an accelerant, with Phones probably being the main culprit my evidence for this is this piece, which I wrote....in early February 2020: www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/philos...

recommend Irish followers to watch this clip. look at a map of our infrastructure - all roads lead to Dublin. we still have a colonial extractive economy #speirgorm
On Question Time last night, I talked about the extractive economic model that has left Wales - and many other nations - impoverished *because they were so rich in resources*. You can see the problem simply by looking at the map: the infrastructure looks like a drainage system.
one of the main themes of this government, and the last, besides 'irritability as a governing philosophy' is that they come across as spectators of statecraft, the very best they are capable of is emoting to camera, and posting it to instagram #speirgorm

But that Zuckerberg lad is a great chap, sure didn't he give a few euro to a few GAA clubs. A lad who donates .06% of his net worth can't be that bad. Surely he wouldn't be complicit in suppressing left wing political activity. Coming to an election near you!!
On the day he is a main candidate in a very important by-election, Facebook has *suspended* Zack Polanski’s account. This ON ITS OWN should be reason to vote Green in Holborn & St Pancras. This is foreign interference in British democracy. And guess what, the media (and Labour) is silent.
the other day Adobe PDF reader tried to charge me for *rotating a document clockwise* so this is great news
Holy shit. Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt it in Rust and released it as open source. Either all software is dead or the US copyright laws are about to receive an update. getartcraft.com/apps

The last time a government TD's canvassers rang my doorbell, I asked 'what are her priorities for the constituency?' and got the blankest faces as if I had been speaking Sanskrit and some furtive mutterings about greenways #speirgorm

it is also extremely revealing that, a generation later, the Orange Order are still intent on marching down a road where they are unwelcome. they have learnt nothing, they have matured not a jot, every day of peace and tranquility has been entirely wasted on them #garvaghy #drumcree #speirgorm
How on earth did the Parades Commission think that allow this parade after 28 years of peace and quiet, would be a good idea? the mind boggles at the sheer incompetence #drumcree #garvaghy
