Bigger picture is that we have a global economy in big problems. Wonder when UK government will wake up and stop planning as if we have a frictionless economy. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cq... Live updates: G7 leaders agree to release up to 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil - BBC News

Deary me. Diana died, and 30 years later her brother and The King are involved in an unseemly spat. Is a disgrace. And we are stuck with him as head of state. BBC News - Charles 'sounded giddily elated' after Diana died, Earl Spencer claims www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

It is said that Buses in Greater Manchester are in 'public control'. Really? Private bus operators get circa £200M of public subsidy to run buses and make profit for shareholders. 'Public control' is limited to routes, timetables, service frequencies, and ticket structure.

This is central influence with weak local democratic oversight. Mayors have thin democratic mandate - pathetic electoral turnouts ( PM as gtr manchester mayor had less than 1 in 5 voting for him). And no regional assemblies- so no broader accountability www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

bbc.co.ukAndy Burnham to send high-performing civil servants to mayoral officesThe prime minister said the scheme would help communities "unleash and unlock their potential".

Harry and Meghan's security arrangements a 'private matter', PM says. Is it? The Home office is not ruling out the possibility that the royal and vip executive committee will pay, and that is taxpayer funded- a public matter! We will be paying. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

bbc.co.ukHarry and Meghan's return to UK reignites questions over securityTheir surprise announcement means a fresh decision will need to be made on the level of publicly funded protection they are entitled to.

UK government should be using the heat crisis as an opportune moment to mobilise the country and people around the climate catastrophe- highlighting the need for behaviour shifts, reducing consumption, end of fossil fuels etc. Instead it doesn't even talk about climate crisis.

Only 25% voted in Greater Manchester Mayoral elections. This woeful turnout is a trend. Clearly little enthusiasm for City regional Mayors, who have thin democratic mandate. If Mayors are to receive more powers, then we need regional assemblies to deepen democractic accountability and scrutiny.

There is a buzzy cheerleading fraternity around the new UK Prime Minister, and a collective self satisfaction - 'we did it'! However, vaste swathes of the country are nonplussed. The PM needs to start emitting some detailed strategy, policies and plans to match the big change rhetoric.

Much mainstream UK centrist politics across centre left to right is not systemic. Its basically surface, with warm words, retail offering based on personality and gimicky policies. Trust me they say. However, their abiding partnership is with the UK establishement and their corporate donors.

Greater Manchester and all city regions in england have been working within devolution framed by neoliberalism. Austerity, financialisation, thinned democracy, city centre consumption and rentierism. Any progressive success in social, economic and environmental justice terms has been marginal.

Very few people in UK take Starmer seriously. He and the cabinet lack credibility. Countries abroad know it. The Uk government is a domestic and international liability and damaging the country's international reputation.

Think tankers, politicians and advisers who were part of the UK coalition government of 2010-2015 were all part of a hellish and cruel austerity. Some even today hold positions of influence.
