I lasted for about two hours as a telemarketer. Second person I called yelled at me for interrupting his dinner (he was clearly going through some things) and I just decided I couldn't do that anymore.

Without saying your age, what is your favourite movie that came out when you were 20 years old?

Honestly the whole Odyssey argument feels like my insisting that the Scouring of the Shire is essential to the Lord of the Rings (it is and if you don’t see that you’re just wrong). Adaptations are doing different things in different media and can work even when having a very different take.

I’ve been grading and the papers are hitting 100% AI at this point. I’ve talked to my Dean and I am going to move to 75% of the grade being in-person exams in future. It’s the only way to be sure that the student is actually thinking.

bunch of different estimates but they're all in the same range: 30 to 40% of Americans have never knowingly met a Jewish person. it's about 60% regarding Muslims. this still happens to me regularly: I'll be the first Asian guy someone will ever have had a conversation with.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again. #Pinks #ProudBlue

Other than Trump saying so, is there any evidence that Venezuela is under US control right now? Everybody on here seems to be taking his word for it but nothing in today’s events suggests that is the case.

Another poison pill buried in Mark Carney’s budget: a repeal of a reduced postage rates for books and shipments between libraries. Libraries across the country are sounding the alarm for what it would mean for the viability of another essential public institution.

cbc.caLibraries say budget proposal to end shipping program would be 'catastrophic | CBC NewsLibraries across Canada say a proposed change in the federal budget bill would end their ability to ship books at reduced rates, threatening interlibrary loan programs and possibly forcing the closure...

I was all set to be “ah I see the scolds of Bluesky are at it again” and then I watch this abomination.

We have an immediate need for an RPG proofreader. This is a paid gig, proofing just over 11,000 words. Experience is preferred. Please email jon@handiwork.games with your resume and rate. If you don't have a set rate that's fine - we can talk. Please feel free to share, tag and recommend.

But honestly as delighted as I am to see the Jays go to the Series that was a brutal way to lose for Seattle. Of course it was going to be a brutal loss for either team at this point but still.

Hi Canadian friends! Want to help prevent what’s happening to science south of our border from happening here?? Hope the answer is YES… Assuming it is, it took me about 2 mins to fill out and send this pre written letter #ArmchairActivism #AcademicSky 🇨🇦 🧪

In Canada, proposed cuts of 15% across the federal government would have a dramatic effect on already globally decimated research & science. Join Canada's research & science community and tell PM Mark Carney to preserve the funding promised in 2024. Send a letter: win.newmode.net/canadianasso...

I mean as crackpot as this is I also feel the need to point out that these guys don’t know much about organ transplants. They don’t make you immortal! The immunosuppressants have side effects and you can’t just keep transplanting.

“.. Quite a hot mic moment on CCTV in Beijing today as Putin and Xi, both 72 years old, are caught casually talking about living to 150 and maybe forever thanks to organ transplants. (As picked up by Bloomberg.)” (via @yarotrof.bsky.social)

For the first time in my life I am being impeded in my work because the org chart is down. Not because a reorganization is underway but because the host is not connecting. Sigh.

We absolutely do not need to “remove the power” from this word. Naziism is evil.

Gutfeld: “We need to learn from the blacks. The way they were able to remove the power from the n-word word by using it. So from now on it’s: What up, my Nazi? Hey, what up, my Nazi? Hey, what's hanging, my Nazi?” Kennedy: “Nazi, please!” Gutfeld: “Thank God you did a hard ‘i’ there.”

I mean, what did you think was going to happen in a world where ATS means you need to hit all the keywords for a job to get a resume looked at by a human and you have to submit hundreds of resumes to get an interview?

It’s a little surreal watching students get tested on material I wrote a decade ago. Like my old opinions coming back to haunt me. Mostly, though, it’s the recurring sense that this isn’t the best way to teach this stuff.

“Uncontrolled Reentry” is right up there with “Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly” as a good name for a book about Musk.

SpaceX says a leak in-flight has caused Starship to lose attitude control. The spacecraft is in a suborbital spin and likely will have an uncontrolled reentry over the Indian Ocean. This follows other mission setbacks — loss of booster during return and failure of payload doors to open. 🖥️ SpaceX
