🎉 Over 50 people attended our 2026 conference on Voice, Narrative, and (Self-)Representation 🎉
A special thank you to @uclhjs.bsky.social for hosting us, to all the presenters, the panel chairs, the JHSE for their support, and to Dr Paris Papamichos Chronakis for his inspiring keynote lecture!
It was a day that brought together academics across Jewish Studies at every career stage, from PhD students to senior researchers and heritage professionals, even a number of undergraduates joined in! This kind of intergenerational exchange is at the heart of what we do at the NGG.
Agi Erdos, John Reed Spiers, Martin Borýsek, and Gabriela Orozco presented papers on an eighteenth century Galician wine merchant, the image of Rachel Bespaloff and the challenges of photographic provenance, Jewish intellectuals in early modern Venice, and youth dances in 1918 Ladino New York.
Our final panel on Religious Texts and Translations included papers from Sarah Grabiner on British siddurim, Ali Langroudi on Judeo-Persian biblical scribes, Rodion Knyazev on Jewish/Christian separation through kashrut, and Michal Issachar on dialogue between Victor Frankl and Martin Buber.
A wonderful start to our annual conference! The first panel on Jewish Communities of England included papers from Brian Reeves, Sophia Lambert, and Anna Perceval that took us from nineteenth century Suffolk, to the turn of the twentieth century Bradford, ending in London’s postwar East End.
The second panel on Museums and Public Memory featured papers from Estie Gordon, Teresa Klimowicz, Justyna Biernat, and Sari R. Alfi-Nissan, covering museums in Buenos Aires and Kock, Poland, Holocaust memory in a secondary school play, and a sociological exploration of a wartime airport.
LBI London intern Katharina Hadassah Wendl has published an article exploring the work of a 1920s Neo-Orthodox woman. Raised in Frankfurt’s Neo-Orthodox community, Gella Sänger became the ‘first woman to have authored and published a handbook on Jewish law’.
