C64 SID Playback on the Acorn Electron This is better! I used the same output routine from the PT3 player for 1-bit sound, and it's a significant improvement. Shouldn't make your ears bleed as much. 😂🔊

Returning to the Acorn Electron and my ongoing mission to get better sound out of it... I've taken the Vortex II PT3 player engine from the BBC Micro player I put together and created a new 1-bit Electron ULA stage to dynamically play the PT3 files. Sounds better than the SID attempt so far. 🔊

Just messing with some landscape handling on the Electron, in the style of Guardian/Gauntlet/Defender.... and Dambusters (BBC Micro only - R.S.Goodley/Alligata 1983) Never got the hang of this one, maybe time for an Elk version 🙄 No scrolling involved - double buffered, from scratch.

Very early test with some enemies. No collision detection and no clipping yet. I shrunk the viewport a little in advance to create enough frame time for enemies, moving platforms, etc.

So, I kicked out the OS and employed all 4 6522 VIA timers to map to envelopes plus the three MFP timers to bring Mad Max's (Jochen Hippel) famous track "There Aren't Any Sheep in Outer Mongolia" from the "Ooh Crikey Wot A Scorcher" Atari ST demo to the BBC Micro as it should be heard. 🔊

I was not expecting somebody to manage to get a decent texture mapping on the Oric, it's slow as hell but it works :) Well done!

Unnamed Electrobots game (WIP) for Acorn Electron 🚫AI. Created more varied tiles and tile types. Next up: stats, enemies, moving platforms?

Here's a second Atari ST YM2149F tune converted to the BBC Micro SN76489. This one uses both hardware envelopes and timer effects across all three MFP timers that have to reproduced in software / 6522 IRQs on the BBC. There are a few glitches due to CPU demand, but working on reducing that. 🔊

Things the BBC Micro SN76489 shouldn't be able to do - Part 2 So it's possible to create a basic software emulation of the SID chip. Now, what should be an easier task of emulating the YM2149F, as we're dealing with square waves and hardware envelopes, but also MPF timer effects - it wasn't. 🔊

I have been tweaking the jump (including 'coyote time') and fall animation until it felt just right. It is (un)expectedly difficult to erase a collected coin on all 4 preshifted back buffers, at the right location and at the right time... not perfect yet!

Painful and awesome at the same time!! 🤯👏

So... this shouldn't really be possible (and to some degree it isn't), but here's a version of my SoftSID emulator that plays C64 SID files now running on an Acorn Electron on it's ULA... 1-bit sound... on and off. Carrier noise and artefacts, but it's running.... ⚠️🔊 Turn down your speakers!⚠️

A little more progress... the music is in, added some trees (which randomly disappear at the moment, and don't look right above the horizon due to the palette change) and a mountain range. The small map (you might recognise it) will eventually mirror the curves on screen, but not quite working yet🔊

iapetus 🇵🇹 reposted

A quick palette change at the top half of the screen (leaves no longer changing colour at the horizon), and a fix to the disappearing trees, along with better tracking of road curvature and height. Next to see if I can add opponents to the track without severely impacting performance. 🔊

OK, back to the bottom of the screen and giving the little robot a little more wiggle room (16 char rows instead of 12). However, this version takes more time and space. I also need to check if this is stable on a real Electron. Did I say I thrive on self-imposed constraints? 😂

Now feeding an actual level "design" (made in Tiled) into the game instead of a looping image...

iapetus 🇵🇹 reposted

Just a small update, but I now have 4x speed SID files dynamically playing on the SN76489. Cycles are very tight so I had to disable the scope and colour cycling, but sounds good. 🔊

iapetus 🇵🇹 reposted

Added in IRQ software bass by default... this is less harsh than using periodic noise via the LFSR. Also improved the scope visualization a little. Still lots of issues with SID files that trample all over the BBC Micro memory map, but this one appears to work just fine. 🔊

"Wanted: Monty Mole" (WIP) on Acorn Electron. Took longer than expected because movement code is quite convoluted. Not perfect yet. Slowed down to target 25fps. Funny quirks in original game (and in mine): 1. No eye when walking right, 2. Walks slower on some tiles because constantly "falling"

Minor update to Electroniq (0xc0de6502.github.io/electroniq/), my online Acorn Electron emulator. You can now Quick Play™️ new games like Pyjamarama, Citadel 2, Chuckulus, Apache Canyon & Zezito and the Lost Stars. Many thanks to their authors and Nyimski for hosting the ROMs

Inspired by @kieranhj.bsky.social 's realtime AKS player on the BBC Micro, I reused the AY-3-8912 to SN76489 converter to expand this to realtime playback of PT3 files from Vortex Tracker. This opens up another tracker that can now be used for BBC Micro music composition. Much smaller than ym files.

Working with Claude to investigate why AY register streams compress so much better than SN register streams, has led to a v3 of the VGI format which puts it in touching distance of VGC compression ratios whilst maintaining the lower and bounded (less spikey) runtime cost: github.com/kieranhj/vgm...

I'm spending time on trying to get a working layout for the game because contrary to the Atari ST that has more of wider resolution (320x200) the Oric is more square (240x224) so we have more vertical space. So I decided to try to have the portraits always visible!

Exploiting RAM contention to sync to hblank after RTC interrupt fires to get stable horizontal colour palette switching in MODE1 on Acorn Electron (from SWRAM). Video reveals the exact locations of the palette switches, including partial colour changes. Bit afraid to test on real hardware 🫣

C64 #Delphian progress: still working on this BTW. Latest additions include getting the solar systems working (with 2 - 6 planets), WIP on solar system chart, and the addition of a Stardrive for fast travelling within a solar system. I should perhaps make a progress video soon...

Someone over on StarDot just dug up an old topic I started FIVE years ago regarding my attempted port of Pooyan for the BBC Micro.... they're wondering what happened with it ! .....can't honestly remember ! 🤷

#C64 #Delphian progress: life's been a bit up and down recently, but it's okay now. So, did a bit more work on the game, getting the star chart to work. I can now select a destination star system (that's in range) and jump there. Still some optimisation to do, but here's how it's looking so far...

Two-player #BBCMicro Elite has just become the first game ever to support all the buttons on twin Delta 14B joysticks So two players can dogfight in Elite without either of them needing the keyboard For some of us, this is a dream come true! And it justifies all this hardware I keep buying... 😀
