Watching the snows come and go is fun!

Simon Kuestenmacher@simongerman600.bsky.social

This wonderful animation by @milos_gis shows a full year of the Iberian peninsula as seen from space. Spain and Portugal change their colours less intensely than areas in central Europe where the seasons are more distinct.

I stacked 62 raw frames from the Artemis II crew into one HDR picture: a total solar eclipse, seen from behind the Moon. Thank you Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen for shooting it, and NASA for releasing the raws this month. #ArtemisII #Astrophotography

Nearly there! 🙂

Hera’s second braking manoeuvre yesterday reduced the spacecraft’s velocity relative to the Didymos and Dimorphos system by 70 m/s from a distance of 2300 km away. A trio of smaller ‘transition’ manoeuvres this coming week will reduce Hera’s relative velocity down to near zero. hera.esa.int

I did know about Stickney but, to my shame, I did not know about Chloe Angeline Stickney Hall! So cool!

Planetary Crater Consortium@planetarycraters.bsky.social

Crater Fact Friday ☄️DID YOU KNOW☄️ that Mars' moon Phobos has a massive crater? Stickney is 9 km across and is named after Chloe Angeline Stickney Hall, an American mathematician and suffragist whose calculations were critical to the discovery of the martian moons in 1877. We'll learn more with MMX!

I love that the ship that caries spacecraft to French Guiana has sails and comes from #Marseille 🙂🇫🇷⛵

ESA Earth Observation@esaearth.esa.int

MetOp-SG-B1 has arrived at Europe's Spaceport! The weather satellite reached French Guiana aboard Canopée after 10 days at sea. It will now spend a short period in storage before preparations for its Ariane 6 launch, expected later this year. More🔗 www.esa.int/Applications...

And Lift Off! A glorious launch of #MMX, the start of an amazingly awesome 5 yr round trip to Mars' moon Phobos. 1yr to get there, 3yrs exploration landing on the surface (twice), then 1yr to get home with the bounty (2tbls of Phobos dust), arriving in the Australian outback in 2031! 🥳🔭🧪🛰️🚀

The MMX spacecraft will be launching from Tanegashima in a few hours. The English-language livestream will be available at www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn6g... (via @elizabethtasker.bsky.social ). For those keeping track: This is the only spacecraft headed to Mars during the current launch window.

The full coupling turns out to be quite complex, for a variety of technical and scientific reasons, and requires more work. So we put together a new team @issibern.ch to do this, and look forward to other comets like the unknown target of @cometinterceptor.bsky.social! bsky.app/profile/nick...

Dr. Nick Attree@nickattree.eurosky.social

That exciting project... My proposed @issibern.ch team has been accepted! I will be leading another team on cometary activity ☄️😀 More details to follow, when I've sorted them out 😅 bsky.app/profile/issi...

The first is about tracking the trajectories of dust particles around #comet #67P and led to this publication by Abhinav Jindal, @browngeomorphlab.bsky.social, and @spacemarschall.net. Lots of dust falls back on the surface, changing it's properties, which we want to model bsky.app/profile/nick...

Dr. Nick Attree@nickattree.eurosky.social

In all the excitement this week I forgot to post: Abhinav's paper on dust transport across #comet #67P ☄️has been published! This came out of an excellent week spent working with @spacemarschall.net and @browngeomorphlab.bsky.social at #Nice observatory www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

For this we need a fast but realistic thermal model. Well it just so happened that Yuri Skorov, who was visiting me @iaacsic.bsky.social, had just that! bsky.app/profile/nick...

Dr. Nick Attree@nickattree.eurosky.social

Back at work @iaacsic.bsky.social in #Granada after an excellent #EPSCDPS2025 in #Helsinki and the projects don't stop! I'm pleased to welcome Yuri Skorov from @mpsgoettingen.astrodon.social.ap.brid.gy for some collaborative work on #comets and thermophysical modelling for 2 weeks. #PlanetSci

Very interesting idea. I kinda hate the idea of reading something on a timer with other people during a meeting, but I do like the idea of digesting something written down and then discussing it.

Alejandro Soto@soto.space

Ever since reading about this memo meeting method, I have wanted to try it, but haven't had the guts to try to get people to do it. This article is nice confirmation that maybe it would be good to try. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Forgot to repost this yesterday, but yes, the attack on Weathertop happens on my birthday!

The Shire-Reckoning@shire-reckoning.bsky.social

The five Nazgûl advance slowly on the camp. Their terror compels Frodo to put on the Ring—making him suddenly visible to them. Even as he calls upon Elbereth, a Nazgûl rushes forward and stabs him in the shoulder with a Morgul-knife. He removes the Ring and collapses.

Well I did not win the Nobel prize on my birthday, but it is astrophysically related so I'll take that as a win! 🌠 bsky.app/profile/nobe...

BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2026 #NobelPrize in Physics to Francis Halzen “for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.”

"In addition to the General Conditions of Participation... proposals need to: ... Not violate fundamental laws of physics ..." No perpetual motion machines? You got it boss!

Some impressive artwork here. Gonna have to up our game for my next ISSI Team! 🙂

At ISSI, we like to think that our doors are open to some of the sharpest minds in space science and, as it turns out, to a bit of crayon-wielding creativity too. 🖍️🔭 See what happens when world-class research meets a more colourful kind of curiosity: www.issibern.ch/where-nobel-... 💙

Fascinating thread on comparative planetology for rocky #planets, the results of an interesting sounding @issibern.ch meeting!

Paul Byrne@theplanetaryguy.com

I said I'd do a thread about my new Space Science Reviews paper, so here it is! This is part of a collection of papers arising from a meeting at the International Space Science Institute in Bern in 2024: a workshop to better understand rocky extrasolar planets. A 🧵:
