If I'm reading this right (and I assume I am):  it's now federally legal to possess marijuana, so long as you also have a gun!

Phil Lewis@phillewis.bsky.social

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court sides with a Texas man who says it’s not a crime for marijuana users to have guns.

If you had me guess two years ago the name of an American who’d receive a seven minute standing ovation in Spain in 2026, I almost certainly would’ve said Brendan Fraser. Or perhaps Bob Prevost. One of those two would’ve been my guess.

For centuries, the Catholic Church has debated whether its hack for the Holy Father to mention Don Quixote while addressing Spanish Parliament. Pope Leo XIV makes his stance clear:

I’ve received several letters re: Pope Leo XIV being the first Supreme Pontiff in History to address the Cortes Generales — the Spanish Parliament. This is correct. Until today, the Don-Hack Question was a metaphysical debate among theologians, delaying this papal appearance by several hundred years

I spent more time on this piece than almost anything else I've written in the last year. Building a better, more decentralized internet is an inherent necessity if you want a functioning democracy. I hope people find it a useful encapsulation of where we're at. www.liberalism.org/p/enshittifi...

He is currently under federal investigation for sex trafficking, sexual assault, and other alleged crimes. Which of course makes him a prime candidate for a potential presidential pardon.

Very happy with the latest iteration of SometimesWeekly.com. I’m still building the site for desktop, but the recent work has made the site much more mobile friendly. Slightly more organized and new navigation prompts at the end of (most) Entries. Next up: long-overdue accessibility improvements.

If you’re good at undermining democracy and grifting, the right wing ecosystem has 100 homes for you. If you’re good at defending democracy, the Democratic consulting class keeps you at arms length, and provides no home, except every 2-4 years when they need your message for their grift

What happened the day after the election? The night OF the election? The consultants disappeared. They needed to decide who to blame. They picked Biden. In 2016, it was something else. But there’s one common denominator: Obama-era technocrats.

The truth is, no one is going to defend democracy except the citizens of this country, sufficiently educated and prepared for where this could be headed. Resist the beginnings. Consider the end.

Normalize asking television media personalities, including “objective” news anchors, what *they* think about an issue being discussed on TV. Quality journalism is not meant to be faux-objective in the face of lies. Quality journalists in modern America should certainly have a perspective.

The following statement feels important and seems like it explains something, but I’m not exactly sure why or what: Millennials grew up watching Emeril, while Gen Z grew up watching Guy Fieri

In October 2023, I attended RFK Jr’s third party announcement. What I observed was a prediction of our present moment and the beginning of a consolidation of ideologies toward a pro-authoritarian political movement. It’s one of my favorite pieces I’ve written: www.sometimesweekly.com/2023/10/fear...

Far from just a media problem, of course. A fetishization of “debate,” completely detached from any commitment to substantive values, is pervasive in academia as well, where “We can’t stop talking to them!” is constantly trumpeted as justification for inviting extremists to friendly fireside chats.

Just had a colleague walk into the break room at work, see me and exclaim: “it’s the typewriter man!” Yes, all is going according to the plan.

The typewriter community is great, very much like the ARG community. Since starting to collect typewriters, I’ve joined typepals.com and have had great experiences. It’s reassuring to know there are other people out there trying to escape this digital hellscape!

Academics, stop assuming good faith from right-wing political operatives. They exploit your willingness to discuss ideas on their merits to launder credibility for their deeply unscientific, inhumane agenda. Sincerely, A disinformation and money-in-politics reporter

“In addition to creating value by leveraging an expanding marketplace, given the well-documented incestuous nature of the Trump Family, the reacquisition also helps preserve a significant piece of Internet history,” @nickbutler.xyz added, just now.

Me when my boss didn’t codify Roe or close Guantanamo Bay when he had a supermajority in Congress but want people to forget that and think about Joe Biden some more
