After setting up a private package registry in AWS CodeArtifact, I’m hoping this solves some of the authentication and env var messiness.

Charlie Marsh@crmarsh.com

Today, we're announcing our first hosted infrastructure product: pyx, a Python-native package registry. We think of pyx as an optimized backend for uv: it’s a package registry, but it also solves problems that go beyond the scope of a traditional "package registry".

The terms trace and span should be flipped. Intuitively, “traces” are small bits whereas “spans” cross the entire length ie bridges. But no, for whatever reason their meanings are flipped.

I need a stupid mnemonic to remember these better… Trace Cyrus went by the same name for his end-to-end career. Spannah Montana was a stage name for a single operation within her larger career. BOOM

One underrated implication here: we can now build and publish your package without running or even installing Python. In pure Rust, we can build your Python package, install it, publish it to a registry, etc.

Cloudflare is now offering a feature called “AI labyrinth” where it serves a series of AI generated pages to AI crawlers that ignore robots.txt directives. They’re essentially serving AI slop to AI crawlers that are training off of a website’s content without permission. Deliciously devious. 😈

arstechnica.comCloudflare turns AI against itself with endless maze of irrelevant factsNew approach punishes AI companies that ignore “no crawl” directives.

The answer is in the announcement. Obsidian has multiple revenue streams: Sync, Publish, Catalyst, and Commercial. Obsidian is seven people and not trying to grow the team. Most orgs were significantly out of compliance and enforcement is impossible. This change permits what was already happening.

We’re building a new static type checker for Python, from scratch, in Rust. From a technical perspective, it’s probably our most ambitious project yet. We’re about 800 PRs deep!

Holiday season is here! Here's a friendly reminder: take a screenshot of the database before you go on vacation! 🎄

here's an example of using @obsidian.md Web Clipper to extract the transcript from a YouTube video then run it through Interpreter to summarize the key points you can do the same with your highlights, or any page content you want — and run templates based on URL patterns

Basically TRS is often used by video cameras because the R (ring) provides stereo sound. TRRS is used by my Rode Go 2 Receiver because it has 2 rings, allowing audio monitoring and microphone capabilities.

The reason why you have to tap “Trust this computer” every time you plug your iPhone in is because you’ve turned on automatic backups. There must be a better solution here Apple

A key lesson I’ve learned as a manager is situational leadership. Managing everyone the same doesn’t work. People vary in skill and motivation for tasks. High skill, high will workers need empowerment, while low skill, low will workers need clear direction and guidance. Adapt your approach.

FYI if you’re trying to get into Data Engineering, this is accurate

Still seems to be a recurring topic: "[#dataengineering] become config more than anything else." My own thoughts on this as a programmer is now is the best time to shift parts of data engineering "to the left" with infrastructure-free pipelines developed next to the app code
