I was told by someone from eau Claire that it’s pronounced “oh Claire” so I said it and they said I still said it wrong Thoughts?

I just read that apparently Cincinnati isn’t the Midwest but apart of the “upland south” So if I go around the city saying I live in the upland south, would people know what I’m talking about?

I’ve spent the last several weeks interviewing amazing candidates for this role and my insights on the landscape of sports psych / baseball mental performance are definitely different since the start Here’s some of my observations and thoughts about the state of psychology and cognition in sports

A lot of my baseball career has been in analytics but many probably didn’t know I also lead our mental performance group, the psychology and cognition department. This consists of me, several researchers, and coaches who apply our findings back to the players and coaches

So I see the state of applied psych as: - many people who are ready to run comprehensive studies and earn buy in via quantitative psych - very few companies (not just orgs, not just baseball) who are willing to allow multi year roadmap to show validity - fewer people who can outline a roadmap

If all these players and coaches say stuff like “baseball is a mental game”, then why fear what you’ll find out when testing between the ears? Players are more hungry for psych now more than ever. We should be talking about alpha waves as openly as we talk about velo if it’s that important

A lot of this seems to be related to how difficult it is to show performance gains due to psych tools. If you can’t say how much better someone can be, then it’s hard to make any strong claims as to why applied psych is important. And I think that’s a disconnect between the lab vs real life

Many people I talked to welcome testing the correlation between performance and psychology assessment. But the majority of people i talked to were not enabled to run studies because of seemingly fear of failure from superiors. That’s where it’s confusing. Why stifle innovation out of fear?

I see a lot of poorly executed pop psych assessments (think: myers briggs) as primary assessments while the real interesting research happens as small tests and never scale out because the vision of applied psych is very narrow. Many chase “keep people from failing” and not “optimize people”

When you frame something as “if you don’t do this, you’re falling behind” you encourage doing the minimum. That’s what I sense the state of mental performance is across all industries. Which is very defeatist imo. It puts a stigma on psych overall — “you only need it if you’re falling behind”

First, there are so many people who are excited for an opportunity to do applied psych work and there are very few places that leverage performance psychology: sports, law enforcement, and military. Applied psych has generally been a function of HR at many companies and imo that’s a miss

One not-so-side-quest for BDB this year is whether to impute missing combine drills and if so, how? There’s combine player tracking data that can help with more accurate imputation. But it’s a little spicy to impute — a player doesn’t do all the drills for a reason. Very few do all of them

But if you’re able to fill missing data accurately, that’s a big advantage when applying combine data back to the in-game player analysis part of BDB. This was actually a SLICED episode many years ago! I believe @ethancdouglas.bsky.social had an imputation strat that placed him 1st in an episode

there's a lot of notebook spam on kaggle. i've made my claims well known to kaggle staff and BDB organizers. it will be difficult for beginners and novices to differentiate between predatory vote-4-vote kagglers and actual, helpful notebooks. try to find a community to share work with. helps a TON

"small projects, well done" is a recipe for success. several people have placed as HM or finalists with simple methods that are defended well. how to defend a good concept? correlate with public metrics, have it provide another angle to describe a play/event, find year-to-year correlation, etc.

lots of comments and messages around about how great BDB is for careers (in NFL, sports, and just in general for quantitative or comp sci related roles). that's all still true after 7 years. don't wait for the next one. if you have time, it's not too hard to get going on a cool project

I’m hiring for a new psychology and cognition coach! If you get excited about cool results like in this thread and want to find ways to apply this back to players before games, in the dugout, and after games, check the posting out here: www.teamworkonline.com/baseball-job...

hi all, one more bump for this. if you know anyone who would be interested in mental performance coaching from a very data-driven approach, please spread this around!

"Why doesn't he get whiffs if he has good Stuff?" Current models can be opaque in how they get to their conclusions. To combat this, we have developed a process to illustrate how and why a player's pitches are good/bad/neutral, based on our models. (1/8)

short faq from DMs: - x axis is inverted because the measures are actually the existence of opposite traits (feeling out of control and not feeling in flow). Particularly for flow, I’ve measured it as alpha desynchrony from resting state baseline, which appears in z transform as negative values

- some outliers are removed because they were projected high - the tests are multilingual and are reported to be ~8th grade reading comprehension (US 8th grade) - there are also checks for multicultural interpretations - casting a very wide net for applicants so please don’t be shy applying

But of course: does it play? And it’s cool to see here: more often you’re in flow state (or can get to flow state), the better the projection gains are — and this correlation is stronger than the emotional regulation factor!

I’m looking to grow this dept with a new coach who is excited about this kind of research and wants to apply these kinds of findings back to the players. If that’s you or if you know someone that fits this, check it out here www.teamworkonline.com/baseball-job...

Correlating strategies and the feeling within game is great but everyone will ask “does it help with performance?” Since we collect data, we can compare this back to how much their overall projections change since implementing strategy usage. And while the correlation is weak, it’s not nothing!

There are other aspects of psychology that are much more vague but perhaps more valuable, like flow state. You can measure this via EEG and how much alpha wave you’re producing while doing something (like playing baseball). Not as strong correlation, but seems like strategy usage is helpful

I got my PhD in psychology, studying cognitive neuroscience. Using some cog neuro methods in the area of baseball mental performance has been very interesting! Some things are super sensible: positive correlation of feeling “in control” and using emotion regulation strategies in game

Mike DeWine signing Ohio’s gas tax holiday on the first day of #WeekWithoutDriving is a good reminder that 1 in 3 Ohioans are nondrivers (including people with disabilities, seniors, and folks who can't afford to drive or choose not to) and will not get any benefit from this bill

RIP Chad Gilbert. He’ll be known as the NFG guitarist but I loved Shai Hulud and found them when I was in HS getting into more hardcore music

One of my bucket list items is going to the summer koshien. Dudes throwing 400 pitches in 3 days; dudes pitching every day; and top talent were players like ichiro, Ohtani, Darvish to name a few It’s wild stuff. Extreme baseball

If baseball is a religion in Japan, Koshien is its holiest shrine. Visiting the Koshien Stadium Museum was like walking into a time capsule of baseball devotion: Memorabilia, trophies, and jerseys from over 100 years of Koshien tournaments and Hanshin Tigers history fill the space. Take a look. 🇯🇵 ⚾
