Not allowing job seekers to spend their dole money on beer and cigs sounds like a good idea, but the costs of setting up, administering a scheme and compensating supermarkets, who presumably would have to enforce it would surely cost far more than the £538m saving the lower rate would represent.

bbc.co.ukTories would prevent long-term jobless spending benefits on alcohol and cigarettesThe proposals would also see benefits cut for people who are able to work but have failed to hold down a job.

The range of things people think the law should intervene to regulate is genuinely bizarre, and frankly a little sinister.

NEW: Jack Thorne, one of Britain’s most successful screen and stage writers, has warned that some people in his profession are using AI “to cheat”. Calls for laws banning the secret use of the technology to generate scripts. www.theguardian.com/stage/2026/s...

I'm still to hear an explanation (compelling or otherwise) for the UK spending and equal % of GDP on defence as France yet having a significantly fewer troops and a navy which barely functions. Regardless of how much should be spent on defence, it is clear that the MOD is disastrously, inefficient.

bbc.co.ukBritish army told to stop non-essential training exercises to save moneyUnits in the UK not preparing to be deployed have been told to cut back on training exercises due to cost pressures.

What's really wrong with the Thamelink trains is that standard class has no charging points, no tables, and no wifi, making it impossible to work on them, this on some of Europe's busiest commuter lines. This hardly helps productivity.

This is an interesting and, quite sinister, approach to press regulation. Mr Polanski links us too entirely sensible proposals to further press regulation. Yes he suggests that the reason he favours a new regulatory approach is that the press says things he disagrees with or a critical of him.

Zack Polanski@zackpolanski.bsky.social

It’s time we sorted out the press. Constant misinformation to protect their donors and fossil fuels is destroying lives and our planet. The Government must step up and stop being cowardly.

Fully behind restricting this but also really want to try ‘black-ear pastrami’

Cornell University has banned the processing of wild game in residential kitchens on campus after two students carved up a bear carcass to make “black-bear pastrami”

This is a genuinely bizarre and cynical invocation of feminism. Nicola Sturgeon claims she didn’t notice that her husband had trousered nearly half a million quid from the party she was leader of. This is borderline incredible. Pointing this out is in no way sexist.

theguardian.comNicola Sturgeon: ‘I should not be held responsible for the wrongdoing of men’Ex-SNP leader says she has appeared on more front pages than her husband this week, adding it is not right

This is a perfect example of why these people aren’t serious. The Democrats have no route to removing Trump. An impeachment would merely be symbolic. Politics of symbolism is for those for whom politics doesn’t matter, and is therefore a game. The world doesn’t need people who play politics for fun

Ian Dunt@iandunt.bsky.social

He's a fucking genocidal madman and anyone who doesnt try to remove him from office bears responsibility for what he does in future.

A fascinating deep dive into the lead-up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. No indication, as GOP often claims, that Biden’s chaotic exit from Afghanistan encouraged Putin to act. It suggests Putin had decided to invade in early 2020–ie before the U.S. pullout. www.theguardian.com/world/ng-int...

theguardian.comA war foretold: how the CIA and MI6 got hold of Putin’s Ukraine plans and why nobody believed themDrawing on more than 100 interviews with senior intelligence officials and other insiders in multiple countries, this exclusive account details how the US and Britain uncovered Vladimir Putin’s plans ...

This is a sign that Trump is seriously concerned about Starmer falling and is looking to give him a good news story.

This is worse than pathetic. The constant drum beat of economic nationalism from the French government around rearmament shows them to not be serious in the face of Russian aggression.

France has blocked an EU initiative to let Ukraine use a European loan to purchase British made Storm Shadow missiles, according to The Telegraph. Paris says the money should be spent within the EU, while several other member states support looser rules. #Ukraine

If you are a genuine free speech warrior you defend the rights people you disagree with especially when they say disgusting things. If you only care about the free speech of those who agree with you, you don’t really care about free speech.

"Farage and Badenoch are free to offer up an explanation as to why Connolly should be able to incite violence without consequence, while el-Fattah should face extrajudicial punishment for it. Until they do so, there is an all too obvious one: they are openly pandering to racists."

The police in the UK are getting completely out of hand. There is no reasonable interpretation of the law by which saying ‘globalise the intifada’ can be considered hate speech.
