Been using Linux for almost a year now on my laptop. I'm beginning to doubt my plan to fully switch to Linux, unless the Linux community can come together and make 1-10 options that work instead of 100-1000 that doesn't. Can barely connect to a wifi when in central town because...

...the menu that lists available wifi networks closes itself if any change in the list occurs, which is frequent in the center of a town. Meaning, I can only connect to a wifi in a less dense area. "how install another wifi manager" is not something I should need to google, ever

I'm only on this distro because the last one I tried had wrong scroll direction, and the "apply" button on the touchpad settings was not clickable. Linux devs, get your shit together

The more I think about it, the more it fits that the SCP foundation is the same idea as demon grimoires of the past Scp: How to contain it, what it does Grimoire: How to summon it, who it is This is not a criticism of SCP, it's a statement of how cool it is, carrying on a long tradition

I'm thinking of old grimoires listing demons of hell and their sigils. I don't believe demons are real, which makes me think 1: someone must have had LOTS of fun coming up with these, and 2: they're kind of like SPCs, aren't they? I hope in the distant future...

...someone finds the entire SCP database, but none of the data indicating it's fiction. Then, people will have the wildest ideas of what have taken place at this point in time. (It'll be much more fun than if they found out how things were for real)

How to implement security features right is incredibly frustrating to ask or search for. There's a bulk answer going "don't try to invent your own solution, do it the standardized correct way" Yes, that's why I asked. I'm not going to hack something together. Jesus Christ, stop explaining this.

A recurring thing that is incredibly frustrating with programming is, "if person doesn't know a specific thing about X", people assume "it's a beginner who knows nothing about X" Programmers can be incredibly quick to think others are nowhere near their skill level, without any reason to think so.

oh also I need to add, this isn't about yesterday's thread (ok I blocked one bot saying this, but the actual human responses were super nice and helpful) It's more about what I see in various threads when googling the thing

Maybe someone happens to know? Working on twitch integration The OAuth process gives my game an access token. It's meant to be usable between multiple sessions. How do I actually store this on the computer? Even if I encrypt it, the encryption key needs to be stored on the computer too.

I'd like the game to be able to (with the player's consent) pin the game's available twitch commands to chat, but that means I need to request a token for sending chat messages, not just reading chat That makes it orders of magnitude more dangerous if someone unauthorized were to access the token

Unless I can learn about an actually secure way to do this, that stays secure even if the PC itself is compromised, I may need to cut features I want the game to have, so that I'm only getting a token for "read chat" permissions and nothing else

I feel it's important to share this again. The internet is so hostile toward creators nowadays. I've seen people have their work stolen, and no longer feel comfortable sharing their creations. We can do better. Let's be supportive to the people that make this a better place! 💞

With custom tooling, I've discovered that the clipboard is incredibly powerful. Copy/paste stuff between software. Want to copy something, use that data a bit later? Paste it into notepad temporarily. Save to a file if needed. When I phase out Unity, I'll center even more of my workflow around this

Most software treats the clipboard as copying something you can see or read. An image, a text, an object. But, copying states is very under-utilized

I just added Randu to my "bad utilities" code, so I can use it for music What are other fun bad algorithms? They should do what they're supposed to do wrong or inaccurately However, because I actually use these, they: * Must still be 100% stable, no crashing/infinite loops * Must be efficient

I added a fun sorting algorithm to my music software recently: * Iterate over the items, looping * Compare the current item to a random item, swap if needed so the larger number appears last * Repeat until sorted I run a single iteration periodically while using the sequence for an arpeggiator

playing silent hill townfall, was really expecting to love it since I liked silent hill 2 remake so much Unfortunately, I'm not into the stealth. Makes me wonder tho, how to do make a non-stealth horror game without emphasis on player violence towards enemies, yet engaging encounter mechanics?

...what if the radio could be tuned to stop the enemies? like, dodging enemy attacks while finding a radio configuration that just suddenly makes them frozen in time, until you leave? there got to be new approaches to this than the mechanics we've settled on for horror

Lorn's Lure was neat tho. Climbing/traversal horror, and The Hollowing seems very neat. "Flight Sim horror" is something I've explicitly stated I want to play, and soon such a thing will exist.

To me it feels like new mechanics that aren't "shoot, bonk, or hide" needs to be invented for horror Only idea that came to my mind is how Pragmata has a weird hacking game you play while fighting enemies, that sounds like it shouldn't work but actually totally does...

There's plenty to do still but completing the development of Rhythm Doggo is definitely closing in. I've done lots of adaptive music with unusual tech before, but never anything as complex as this game. Also, getting into modular synthesizers had a major effect on how the game sounds. So...

...write a sort-of-engine like thing with the simplest integration layer possible. So, I can convert my games to work with any particular engine if I rewrite the integration layer for it. Means using only a tiny subset of the most basic features, but I've accumulated enough knowledge to do this.

Something I'd love to do is an open source version of my adaptive music tech that's usable for other people than me. I'll do it if I can get funding for it.

...I'm thinking a lot of what happens next now that I'm phasing out Unity. I'm going to have to refactor/remake my music tech to be engine independent. It's not enough to make it work in a different engine, it should no longer be locked to one. Also I want to...

Mission accomplished! The puppies in my game are no longer adult dogs with the recordings pitched up. Maybe I should have held off and made this change as a patch after the game's release, so I can market it as: Now With Real Puppy Sounds™
