US garment workers helped pioneer multi-ethnic labor unions, which united people across racial, religious, gender, linguistic, and cultural divides. Also native-born citizens and immigrants. I think about that sometimes when I see people suggest such divides are unbridgeable.

The reality of laboring under an unjust system unites us a whole lot more than race, gender, religion separate us. It's in the interest of capital for us to forget that.

Bleak but confirms biases I'm sure a few of us had. If it had only happened in one sector to one group of vulnerable people and workers that'd be tragic and disgusting, but some version of this happened anywhere the gov wanted to keep things moving, I think.

The Covid Inquiry’s Module 6 report is devastating. Its central conclusion: adult social care was treated as “something of an afterthought”, while “protecting the NHS” sometimes came at the expense of people receiving and providing care. 1/10

The Marie Kondo thing is absolutely one of the points when it became clearest how very little distance there is between crunchy liberal nerds who don't self-examine enough, and edgy misogynist racists, intersect. Almost the exact same diagram for 'how is Jordan Peterson famous'.

Relatedly, the reaction to her really solidified how I'd been feeling for a long time about the fetishisation of both Book Collecting (as opposed to Reading) as a thing AND the online fetishisation of 'collecting' which is so often just hoarding it's barely worth distinguishing...

I'm someone with special interests and hobbies that lean heavily into collecting things, and also the son of a hoarder who - at this point - isn't going to ever stop. The mainstreaming and self-aggrandizing of these behaviours feels really unhealthy to me.

Before he was the alt-right's favourite academic, Peterson mainly became famous for writing a self help book that people who usually think of themselves as above that sort of thing read because he makes everything sound more complicated and thinky than it is.

Kondo said the same shit, but in a couple of paragraphs and poetically, and Book Collecting and Hoarding Fetishism Twitter decided she was a monster. And she's a non white woman so edgy misogynistic racists didn't need a reason.

A friend suggested I make my own sriracha with my glut of chillies so I watched a video about home fermenting & I like all sorts of different flavours you guys and I'll try most things, but I do not trust my own ability to fuck around and let food go off at home and then consume it, on purpose

@westonfront.bsky.social is that poster one of yours?

Saw Duncan Jones’ new film ROGUE TROOPER last night @ London Film Festival. Find I’m mostly describing it as “beautiful” to ppl. It’s v particular combo of motion capture & computer animation (no AI!) builds the richest, most gorgeous movie “world” I’ve seen in years. I loved it so much.

DC WIP Batman - The Dark Knight Returns #1 is interesting because while this book always sort of looks good, and this would always usually be a fascinating exercise, it's hard not to sort of see it's main function as being "DKR without Lynn Varley". Which is quite a context.

I love watching Danny Boyle movies but haven't been able to fully enjoy one since he started working with Alex Garland. Genuinely think his visual and editing instincts are incredible, and he gets amazing performances, but it's so often in service of these big, overwrought and empty genre faffs.

Also I find it hilariously funny in a way I can't quite articulate while the film is on that a film with so much gravity and intensity and thought put into so many elements creates and repeats the concept of Alpha infected who's main distinguishing feature is they've got comically massive cocks.

With irritation just realised that the screaming anti-migrant fuckwits who fib about making white women & children safe technically ARE doing more to keep white women & children safe, because every time there's a protest some blokes with a history of violence/domestic abuse get arrested.

So they're right on a technicality. Which is a bit irritating, but I guess does explain why some white women are so eager to see these protests grow. (Although prob not most of them. Most of them it's probably just the racism)

Agree with all of this. Also, while I have zero doubts about any of the folks I still know who I met in my position as a ubiquitous outsider to the UK comic scene of about 25 years back, it's a relief seeing folks who were also around speak on the subject with their whole chest...

...which is that when something like this happens in a community, there are usually three responses: Silence & distance 'Oh it was an open secret that they were sketchy' Or 'This is a complete shock, they're clearly a sophisticated & manipulative monster' All understandable and shit...

...and none really help anyone - victim or bystander - recognise or handle the NEXT one.) The most important piece of this thread is the signposting of the responsibility of bystanders. It ISN'T comfortable territory, no matter what anyone says, but it's super fucking important things change there.

I'm certain these conversations are being had in person or face to face but I don't see these folks face to face. (Bevis is usually vocal & always correct on issues like this so this isn't a surprise, but still good to see from my perspective...

it's important to arrive at sturdy ethical principles that you can't be annoyed out of. people are annoying as shit

The more of "Colin from Accounts" I watch, the more I'm absolutely certain that at pitch stage there was a completely different version of "DMV" that Harriet Dyer (and probably the rest of the cast, from Tim Meadows on) signed up for.

"DMV" is apparently based on a story that sounds very bleak & blackly comic, about a woman in a dull job driven to horrible extremes by loneliness & desperation; by contrast the show is just a "race to the next zinger" workplace comedy full of "characters", that falls flat in a crowded sub-genre.

It's got a weirdly good cast struggling with pretty tepid writing, and the more you see of the cast elsewhere the more glaring it is how underused they are in it. Then you see Harriet Dyer in "Colin from Accounts", and you can totally picture her leading a proper, insightful & funny version of it.

Keep feeling genuinely cheery about the fact that some people are going to end up listening to or owning a 2026 Proclaimers album because their politics makes them feel they should. Some of them are even going to feel they need to pretend they fucking love it. And the band will also know why.
