Somehow, a scrub who spent a lot of his early life making objectively questionable decisions has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. Turns out a little passion, good mentors, supportive colleagues, amazing students, and a lot of coffee can take you pretty far. Feeling grateful today.

Last, but definitely not least, I want to express my love and gratitude to my wife and daughter, who have been my rocks during this relatively late life odyssey through academia.

Cannabis use was associated with decreased negative affect (NA) and this decrease varied as a function of how intense pre-use NA was and CUD symptoms, such that reduction is NA were largest when the pre-use NA was lower- and higher-than-average, but only really for those with severe CUD.

To accomplish this, we study tested whether cannabis use disrupts the stability of acute and momentary affect across time (i.e., pre- and post-use) among youth, resulting in reduced NA or increased PA and if such shifts varied as a function of pre-use emotional intensity and CUD severity using EMA

Cannabis use was associated with a marked increased in post-use positive affect (PA) and the strength of this increase varied as a function of how intense PA was prior to use, such that the increases in PA were largest when the previous moment was characterized by lower- and higher-than-average PA.

Highly recommend giving this one a listen once it drops.

An amazing episode just dropped. Here and in her book, Dr. Pickard artfully integrates philosophy and science to question some of our basic assumptions and answer the question: Why do people continue to use substances despite evident and severe costs that count profoundly against their own good?

I used to skateboard in competition from age 18-24. I dropped out of high school at 17, got a GED at 19, then went to undergrad at 25 when it became clear I was never going pro in skateboarding.

If you see this, post a random fact about yourself: I was recruited for a show on Nickelodeon in 2012 after performing at Paper Mill Playhouse. My mom didn’t let me do it because I would have needed to be in Florida for months, and she wanted me to stay in school. Show never aired — close call!

Noticed an interesting detail at NIH. Applications in cycle III (Oct-Dec) all have review meetings scheduled for later than the standard window of Feb-March. The ones I’ve seen are so meeting in late April. Stay frosty friends because I’m sure this is due to something totally above board.

Check out this new episode of the Addiction Psychologist. In it, Drs. Tucker and Witkiewitz discuss how the reciprocal relationship between a person and their environment influence an addiction recovery attempt.

🚨New Episode Alert! 🚨 In this episode, Professor John Holmes (jholmessheff.bsky.social) discusses the story of how empirical evidence that changing alcohol unit pricing can have downstream effects on public health was turned into evidence-based policy. creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/...

As a millennial, I reject the concept of work-life balance. Balance is a state where opposing forces are equal and that’s often not possible in the work-life relationship. I strive for work-life harmony where the different parts of my life, though unequal in size, combine to create a unified whole.

Findings suggest HRVB can reduce negative affect, craving, and substance use among those in early recovery from SUD. HRVB appears to confer benefit in part by disrupting the association between craving and subsequent sub use; these results support HRVB as a potentially efficacious treatment for SUD
