When I was a kid, my mom would tell me some Filipino myths and folklore. There are two that stands out and are my favorites: The Lady in White and Heart of the Banana
Once you catch the heart of the banana in your mouth and consume it, you will be granted superhuman strength. But when that happens, you will be surrounded by a bunch of monsters that only you can see (dunno what's up with Filipino folklore and conditionally visible monsters)
If you can successfully defeat all the monsters, then you will keep your superhuman strength for the rest of your life.
I'm sure everybody has their own variations of these folklore tales, from different provinces to even neighboring families, but these are the ones I grew up with

As for the Heart of the Banana, it's a weird one because I don't think I know anyone else who has heard of this legend except for maybe one article on the internet somewhere that's in English. But anyway, there's a legend that out in the jungle amongst all the banana trees, there is only one tree--
--that will drop its heart to the ground under a full moon exactly at the strike of midnight. It is so exceedingly rare, because out of the entire jungle you have to know exactly which tree will drop its heart at the exact time, and you must catch it only with your mouth.

The Lady in White I'm familiar with is much different, and scarier. She could appear at any time of day.
Once there was a man who was boarding a bus, and when he got on, everybody around him looked horrified. He didn't think much of it, but it turned out that the Lady in White sat right next to him
Why everyone on the bus was quiet and horrified is because the Lady in White was carrying her own severed head. What's worse is that EVERYBODY watched her board the bus and sat down next to the man, but he never noticed
Imagine being haunted by a ghost that everybody else can see, but you can't!

I think many cultures have their own version of a mysterious lady dressed in white. She usually appears crying near a lake for her drowned child, or she would hail a taxi, only for the taxi driver to look in the mirror and see she has disappeared and the money she paid for the fare turns into leaves
Finally took my mom to go see Forgotten Island. Oh man, it made me so happy to see her understanding every single reference, including a some stuff I didn't notice on my first viewing! She grew up with all these myths and legends.
Tabi tabi po~!
Afterwards, she told me some stories about a duwende that lived in her old house. They had a name for him and everything. I never even heard this story before!
I remember growing up with stories about aswang, especially the manananggal. I'm so glad the movie made her just as scary as I exactly imagined her to be as a child!
I just can't wait for all of this to be over. This year has eaten me alive twice already with several months of living in constant anxiety and uncertainty. Now I have to finally say goodbye to my home of 13 years and half of our belongings sent to a storage unit indefinitely.
Thank you to those who comforted me in these dark times. Apartment application rejection after rejection was really destroying me when the clock was ticking so near to our final vacate date. I really thought we were this close to being homeless and our belongings seized.
Okay, so after all these weeks, we finally have one application accepted! We finally have a place to stay... Huge sigh of relief! It's about half as big as our current place and it's located a little farther away from work, but we have no choice.
We've been applying for and touring apartments every single day for weeks and it's been nothing but rejections and ghosting. Probate court mandates we need to vacate this house by Oct 1 and we still have no prospects where to go.
My stomach has been churning. I'm in a dark place right now.
