Explaining “Carrie” to bluesky: okay imagine if Will Stancil were a girl,

QuoProQuid@quoproquid.bsky.social

if you want to modernize carrie white then she is not a pretty, misunderstood quiet girl. what she is is a "lolcow", a girl who does not fit in and is seen as a bit grotesque and is systematically provoked until she breaks, with a goal of milking her for content.

finally, the most important feature of atproto, the thing that actual enables the alcoves and courtyards model it was supposed to be and puts blooski ahead of other twitterlikes, has been proposed. i think? whitelisting!

anthology series focusing on magical character tropes. common thread is standard white boy, who comes into the life of the manic pixie dream girl in one episode, the wise black elder the next episode etc. episodes are from the character PoV obviously, the standard white boy is a prop for the others

sassy gay friend is another one, but maybe works better with standard white girl? adding in standard white boys sister (main character family) would also allow for brooding bad boy to have an episode (i think gay romance would subvert it a bit *too* much for the story).

also realised, in the skellin episode, that it isn't *like* a DnD campaign, it *is* a DnD campaign. once you imagine brennan lee mulligan voicing the trolls, you can't unsee it. this is why it is so loved, this is why it is so hated.

rewatching willow (2022). forgot how good it was, how bright and airy, how tight the script. "so good to see you again, elora."

like, it could easily have been a d20 game with the fantasy high crew (only seen freshman year though). some of the player-character pairings in the hypothetical feel obvious, based on their fantasy high choices and general vibes...

nope. being stationary with a far bigger buffer and a more predictable environment gives you a much larger margin for error. more slack so to speak. they won't be a libertarian paradise, but 18th century sailing is a poor analogy, especially since antarctic bases and oil rigs exist.

does this happen here in the opposite direction? i don't spend enough time here to know. i can definitely see a rightward shift on twitter (what is this "X"?), but i live in britain, where there is a steady stream of radicalising horror stories about the regime, so it could just be that.

i'm just doubling down on being a filthy centrist classic liberal anyhow still. don't discount the impact of actual things that really happened in real life. the masses aren't NPCs that do whatever their puppet masters tell them, they have agency of their own. not slaves of the algorithm.

it's frankly bizarre to talk to these people. somehow knife carrying is simultaneously such a problem as to warrant removing the points from kitchen knives, but also not a problem at all if you say your god commands it. my country is in a very dark place because of awful people like her.

look at the state of our MPs... SAD! the principle that rules apply equally to all is a sacred part of english culture. she thinks it's okay to spit on it. i suppose we can compromise -- any exemptions from laws must include english people, given its importance in our culture?

here that folks, if we let them take away kirpans, soon everyone else will be banned from carrying knives also

Tan Dhesi MP@tandhesi.bsky.social

I was born and raised here. Countless brave Sikh soldiers died for Britain, proudly wearing their turban and kirpan. Thankfully, Rupert and Restore don't get to decide what is British. Beware … today they’re coming for me, but tomorrow it could be you!

let me put it this way: i believe the state has no business telling you who you allow in your bedroom, or your bathroom, or your bed & breakfast

Hedge Queen Alice@notyourdove.atproto.systems

just got out from a personal ideological crisis only to reaffirm my filthy centrism (classical anglo liberalism)

isn't "don't move an injured person unless there is immediate danger" one of the most basic rules of first aid? *especially* if its suspected to be a fall from a height? that dragging and manhandling casualties is apparently normal practise for hampshire police renders the whole force unfit. fire.

surely, of all the things that relate to that night, we can agree on this: hampshire police is fundamentally rotten. their command knew what happened that night and still defended the officers actions. we can't have untrained thugs with warrant cards be patrolling our streets.

i usually try to avoid politics on here, or at least i did, but what has happened has destroyed the legitimacy of the regime i live under. people need to be able to trust the police, and they cannot, at least if they live in hampshire. policing by consent is dead.

a special privilege that has no place in a liberal society such as ours. the kirpan is as sacred to sikhs as the principle of equal treatment before the law is to us. people are understandably shocked to find out the degree to which parliament has violated a core principle of our traditional culture

Leftback@leftback.bsky.social

This is a good, fair and firm statement on a horrible case. The murderer abused a privelege and responsibility that the vast majority of Sikhs take extremely seriously every day. To use this case to forment racist tensions needs to be stymied immediately.

"you lose the exemption if you commit murder" no shit sherlock, but that's never used as an argument why anyone else should be free to carry. i have no intention of murdering anybody, i don't know if i could find it in myself to do that, so should i be free to carry say a bowie knife or seax?

when i said i'm committing to the bit of being a filthy centrist classical liberal i mean it. i come from a long cultural tradition that holds tightly the value of everyone following the same rules, that's why we were the ones who invented and codified football. justice is necessarily blind.

the computer told me i look like natalia dyer (or... timothee chalamet, depending on the selfie) and now i'm thinking about the possibility my first cosplay will be nancy wheeler (or perhaps muad'dib, who knows?)

What are we to make of tale that a plane somewhat resembling the twin-boomed Lockheed P-38 landed in farmer George Holt’s fields and when Mr. Holt went forth to remonstrate, was told by the pilot that we a member of the Most Serene Republic of Venice’s air force? – Brian Danbury

professor (showing us The Graph at the start of every module): "do you know how much food you'd need to feed the people added to the population every single week?" me, who grew up talking space colonisation and so has these figures memorised, along with oxygen requirements: "yes"

Hedge Queen Alice@notyourdove.atproto.systems

the overpopulation crowd probably can't even tell you how many tonnes of rice you need to feed a person for one year (calories wise) or what the yield per hectare of potatoes is. or understand the value of hot water and the cheapness of low grade heat on this planet. they know very little really.

my brother in Christ. crowd sourced targeted hate *is* the business model. this site is powered by excess.

marcosantana@marcosantana.bsky.social

Regardless. @bsky.app needs to ban blocked lists. You can’t have crowd sourced targeted hate on a social media platform because it’s undermines the business model. Individual blocking is fine.

not only a right to a platform, but a right to force others to listen... no, i don't think that's what free speech means. at all.

marcosantana@marcosantana.bsky.social

Blocked lists didn’t exist when I joined, so no. You are wrong, lol. Mass blocked lists are now a tool used to suppress free speech which is acceptable under the terms of the platform but are still disliked by certain groups. Crowd sourcing hate by anyone has to be banned. @bsky.app

concept: a social media platform that, rather than being like a public square where people are shouting over each other and everything is exposed to the whole world, is more like a network of courtyards and alcoves and sheltered streets, filled with semi private spaces i think it could work

it is may 2023. blooski is engulfed in drama around moderation policy, with those in charge attacked for following the Bad Person it is may 2024. blooski is engulfed in drama... it is may 2025. blooski is engulfed in drama... it is may 2026. blooski is engulfed in drama...-

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Look not that it seems that anyone on this site is remotely concerned with the truth, but no, I never called for Bluesky to “clean house” of any group. What I said is that there’s a lot of people who are extremely abusive (true), often invoking some group identity as a permission slip or defense.
