Excellent in-flight entertainment tonight incl plenty of hyper-local flavor (my neighborhood record store! my friend and Seattle arts&music legend Larry!)

As someone who first got online in nineteen fucking eighty-six, THIS

we fucking loved it, even when there was basically nothing on it, and let me tell you something else: we loved it because of human connection, human diversity, human creativity. WE DON'T NEED A SINGLE THING ANY OF THESE COMEMIERDAS HAVE MADE AND TRIED TO SELL US IN ORDER TO HAVE A GREAT INTERNET.

Back in my old burg of Somerville last night for a somewhat spontaneous pop show, beginning with the seemingly effortless, intricate confections of NJ’s Lightheaded. (1/3)

And since I got to see ‘em in Seattle this past spring, I stood back a bit for headliners Rocketship, members seen in these peek-a-boo views. (2/3)

OH at the record store: Her: This sounds like like something I would play back in the day Him: Like a year ago? Her: More like three (Me: 💀)

Been digitizing things from my cassette stack of c. 1988-91 local radio shows. This was a cool find.

Galaxie 500 radio interview from summer 1989 Jen has just sent me this lovely 10 minute radio interview of Galaxie 500 from before the release of On... #Audio #Galaxie500 #News

Night 2 of The Bats, with a slightly different set of songs. (Sub “Tragedy” for Boogey Man” in the set list, + “North By North” to close.) Bonus: Lindy Morrison of The Go-Betweens sitting on the steps by me for their whole set. We chatted after, and she’ll be back in the UK next July… to perform!

Other random shots from great sets at GGP: Rachel Love (Dolly Mixture) performing in Railcard, Linda Smith, ex-Felt members in FEEL w/(mostly) instrumental versions of Felt covers, and ace new Glasgow band Comber.

And last night’s post-fest show at Mono with Bubbles (collective musical resumes include Orange Juice, Josef K, Fire Engines, Jazzateers, Bluebells) was a delight. I could watch Malcolm Ross play guitar all night.

I can find enough new music to fill an hour or radio every week, but coming up with a mix tape full of fresh musical discoveries for a fellow lady DJ similarly clued-in to the latest and sharing many of the same favorite bands/labels? WAY HARDER

This was a very fun gig. And I won’t mind if you check out this video premiere instead of listening to my live radio show this Wednesday evening. 😉

RIP Jeff Conolly of Lyres, who could tear it up onstage til the end. (Here w/Mission of Burma at the tail end of a raucous cover of “No Fun” at his cancer benefit in March.)

Probably the most, uh, off-brand thing I’ve ever done, but I was 12 and they had this activity at my summer camp and I was pretty good at it: Receiving the NRA’s Junior Marksman Certification (for .22 caliber target shooting)

Okay, my QUESTION OF THE DAY is… What is your weirdest actual accomplishment? Not the biggest necessarily…but the weirdest?

Only a few days until our first UK tour. We booked this entirely DIY through the goodwill of the punk/indiepop community. Please try to buy tickets in advance - it will help reassure the kind folk that are putting on the gigs that they haven't made a terrible mistake. Tickets: linktr.ee/neutrals82

As much as I enjoy learning about new bands from Bandcamp’s editorial staff, the gaps in many of these younger writers’ musical education really shows when trying to frame current trends in relation to what’s come before, esp some of the 90s micro-scenes.

From the Bicentennial-Fever-Was-Real Dept: the Bicentennial TV! Spotted at my local Goodwill 20 years ago, as captured by my crappy flip phone camera. Do I still regret not buying this? YES

I’d actually known of its existence, having previously read about it in the “Bicentennial” section of Al Hoff’s most excellent book, “Thrift Score.” (She also regretted passing it up.)
