The largest heat wave of the 1960s reached ~6% of the planet, lasting 46 days over the Atlantic and adjacent areas. The largest heat wave of the 2020s hit ~85% of the globe, lasted 367 days, touching virtually everyone. Calling these “heat storms" instead of “heat waves” seems like a good invention.

This should be grabbing headlines too! Some insurers are burying the risks to keep business flowing: "natural catastrophe modellers and actuaries are being asked to give a ‘haircut’ to future projections or ‘manage down the numbers’ in order to avoid causing alarm and to keep getting deals done"

It’s a too weak rule that assumes markets respond rationally to public information (the ‘semi strong’ efficient markets hypothesis that gave us the GFC!), but now we’re not even doing this? Finance is still blind to the differences between systemic risk and cascading foundational ecosystem failures.

"The argument that we need more domestic production because otherwise we will import more oil and gas is essentially an argument for maintaining fossil-fuel demand. It takes the failure to reduce demand and uses it as the justification for producing more."

I was asked by a colleague from my oil & gas days (who has remained in the industry) why UK producing its own gas is less acceptable to the Greens (& others) than importing it from America and West Africa.' The full question & my reply is now online at: climateuncensored.com/there-is-no-...

This stopped me in my tracks. An independent study by @qmul.bsky.social has found that after ULEZ was introduced, children’s lungs grew faster in Central London and have now caught up with children outside of the capital. Incredible.

Air pollution stunts children’s lung growth. New Queen Mary research found that improvements in air quality after the introduction of London’s ULEZ are associated with accelerated lung growth in children. Read more: shorturl.at/Jx86o

I feared this would happen. His story was troubling but the wave of hatred and obsession in the media when he was clearly someone who was vulnerable - whatever you thought of him - was entirely disproportionate and in my view fuelled by racists. My thoughts are with his loved ones tonight.

"By quantitatively demonstrating that local extreme event probabilities are proportional to CO2 emissions, this study shows that emitters cannot escape responsibility for climate impacts by claiming that those impacts are too diffuse or complex to be attributed to fossil fuels."

I only met Sarah a handful of times but it was immediately clear she was essential to economic geography & critical research on the energy transition & green economy. She was insanely knowledgeable, curious, collaborative & so welcoming to me & others then skirting this field.

The second derivative piece was appealing I guess precisely because it is poaching the framing of its warnings from Minskyan analyses of financial instability.

Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.

It's all of those plus it's right now. Climate extremes are here, just mostly for the Global South. Routine temps of 47C across India? My worry is these (welcome) scenarios feed a defensive strategy for investor returns, rather than acknowledging existing investments as a big part of the problem!

"Keeping warming below 2°C requires global emissions cuts of 8% every yr... For wealthy nations such as the UK, which repeatedly claim they will lead the transition, the rate of cuts needs to be in excess of 10% yr on yr. Contrast that with the UK gov's enthusiasm for widespread airport expansion!"

Quelle surprise: my comment on the Govt's latest climate commitment (www.gov.uk/government/n... is out of step, at least publicly, with many colleagues: www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-react... With expert whitewash on one side & charlatans on the other, an honest climate debate stands no chance.

The train network might be in crisis, but one impressive thing is the price of Deutsche Bahn tickets in the summer holidays. €60 Familienticket for the whole family to travel the length of the country on a high-speed train? Incredible.

For much of the Global South 2026-27 is likely to be an existential challenge. "Super El Niño" effects (63% likelihood) could trigger global food crisis, on top of effects from the US war in Iran. Rich countries won't be spared. Talking of uncertain tipping points is good... but look around you!!
