Tough thing about the Haidt deal is that he is, in fact, a deeply unserious academician and had been for the better part of a decade. notwithstanding all hat no cattle, being targeted by meta is no bueno.

For his…sparse…record, see: bsky.app/profile/ntd....

Nick Davis@ntd.bsky.social

Haidt's Google Scholar profile reveals one (1) peer-reviewed paper on social media use and mental health and one (1) paper on technology use and loneliness since 2015. He is not the lead author on a single paper in the area for which he claims expertise. The word for that is: charlatan.

“Unsolicited nude photos“ could be the name of an art installation of dramatic portraiture of Republican candidates for office.

The Downballot@the-downballot.com

Tennessee Republican Brent Taylor, running to flip a House seat his party radically gerrymandered, reportedly sent unsolicited nude photos as recently as 2021. Taylor faces Democrat Justin Pearson for a seat that Trump won 60-39 under the new lines. www.the-downballot.com/p/the-downba...

research tends to follow that which is easy to measure (satisfaction). with democracy on the ballot, i figured an early figure from a narrative review of research on "support for democracy" might be warranted. still working out the kinks, but 378 papers made the corpus of works analyzed.

LLMs, python, and a lot of manually reading and coding articles. feels like im back in graduate school but the results help to guide the vibes that would have otherwise guided the project.

someone should print this off, bind it, and offer it to the public so that you can send hard copies to friends and families.

this is just insanely damning stuff when you lay it all out democrats-judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-su...

Somewhere yglesias is furiously hammering out a substack article about how highlighting sexual assault is taking away from kitchen table issues.

Andy Craig@andycraig.bsky.social

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

It’s noteworthy that yglesias never bothers to interact with this point but nuance is utterly lost on him; he represents a very stupid brew: pedantic but superficial. One can be a perfectly adept writer but an utter fool.

This post is unavailable.

He can say it was a mistake to engage academics in popular discourse but the bigger gaffe was tossing truckloads of money at an undergraduate with access to the internet and a weapons grade case of narcissism.

yglesias has absolutely zero professional expertise as a campaigner and yet he wont shut the fuck up about campaign strategy. i would love for him to literally fuck off to anywhere but here.

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

mid-2000s blogs and blogger culture were clearly a mistake. first-mover advantage in the dumbest flesh-form possible.

the nervous chuckling of a man who has spent approximately zero time among the poor and downtrodden, whose wealth and popular status absolve him of any consequences whatsoever. the depths of irritation this person generates cannot be adequately explained in the english language.

someone should really do an oral history of the early data-for-progress days when these clowns were mouthing off in public slacks. im just saying that, you know, it was quite a time to be alive.

Diesel prices have jumped 65% since the Iran War began — to $6.28 a gallon. That's hitting farmers, truckers, and industry hard in several states that will decide control of the Senate.

does anybody on this site have access to the journal Democratization? i need to download a bunch of papers for a project and we dont have access to it. gahhh.

I wonder if the rollout of post tenure review is ever not hilariously clumsy. an entire bureaucracy of pedigreed people who have no clue what anyone really does or how they do it. what could possibly go wrong?

"partisan sorting, marriage edition" was not on my bingo card, but it does probably track some sort of broader personality sorting i guess.

divorced men specifically are an emerging republican cohort

claude and i built a trick little python scraper but it keeps informing me that it is sad that it cannot download these articles because my institution lacks access. my robot is sad, taylor and francis, look what you've done to my beautiful boy.

very normal democracy

Hear us out: The richest person in the world should not be allowed to dump hundreds of millions to affect the midterm elections. This is not a radical idea. We need campaign finance reform.

I’m for sure less aware of what’s going on but drastically reducing my Bluesky consumption has been Good and i am convinced that being too online boils your emotional baseline if not brains.

very normal democracy

Truthout@truthout.org

Chuck Schumer — one of the most powerful Democrats in the country — has not issued statements to the press or through his social media channels about the administration’s attack on Ilhan Omar, which critics have described as a five alarm fire for the state of democracy in the U.S.

today in life under competitive authoritarianism or whatever @mcopelov.bsky.social's mega thread says

Kyle Griffin@kylegriffin1.bsky.social

BREAKING WaPo: A federal judge issued a temporary order Sunday blocking the Trump admin from airing those propaganda ads. But the administration blew past that deadline and ran two of the ads into the early hours of Monday, advertising data shows.

i dont know how hot this opinion is but IRBs for survey research are completely unnecessary and are good examples of administrative bloat.

have been scraping google scholar using title keywords in attached image and now comes the long, dark of trying to track down a bunch of taylor and francis papers for which i dont have access to. blegh. paywalls. blegh.

funding is zero-sum. imagine spending trillions on resolving hunger, antI-poverty programs, or cancer trials. instead a bunch of nerds dumped truckloads of cash into fancy programs that gobble water, may never be profitable, and that by their designers admission may kill us. so that’s cool I guess

It’s the dolts in the photo-op seats that get me; just blithely clapping along as if everything is perfectly normal. It’s just total loser shit to show up to these events. Like my god the levels of pathetic required to drag your ass to these events.

Trump on Democrats: "They are a bunch of dumb son of a bitches"

I don’t want to log in to accept a paper review. I’m already asked to review too many papers and time is irritatingly short, so, if you’re making me log in to simply say “yeah, okay,” then I’m out! Make it frictionless we live in the year 2026 goodness gracious.

I am lazy. I am also forgetful. I have no idea what combination of emails, usernames, or passwords is needed to achieve this task.

Getting to the point where teaching a course on media and politics will be difficult not to include a module on student journalism. Some of the bravest journalism being conducted by college kids these days.

in a functional democracy where outputs informed inputs in sane, logical ways, this would bury the GOP in rubble.
