Today marks an important day for school food, with the government confirming the first overhaul to the School Food Standards in over a decade - AND for the first time ever, the standards will be properly monitored ☑️ Our Exec Director was quoted in the government's press release ⤵️

“Children are already growing up surrounded by unhealthy food across the wider food system, from what is marketed to them to what is promoted in shops. If we can’t even get the food environment right in schools, where children spend such a large part of their lives, then we have a serious problem.”

These findings are a timely reminder of why improving food provision in schools remains so important. Earlier this year, the government consulted on updated School Food Standards alongside proposals for a stronger monitoring and enforcement framework.

New research from @biteback2030.bsky.social shines a light on poor compliance with the School Food Standards, with analysis of almost 400 state secondary schools finding that 76% of surveyed menus contained at least one breach of the standards. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

theguardian.comMost English secondary schools are breaking healthy food rules, finds report‘Shocking’ breaches such as sweets and crisps at breakfast uncovered just before expansion of access to free school meals

Our Exec Director quoted: “Schools should be one of the places where we can be confident children are being given nutritious food. Yet this research suggests too many are still being routinely exposed to processed meat, fried foods, pastries and confectionery beyond what the standards allow.

Big food companies have huge influence over what fills our shelves, what gets promoted, and what families can afford. So why aren’t the healthiest options to easiest to choose? This week we’re sharing voices from We’re Fed Up!, in conversation with Dr Amos.

Your postcode shouldn’t determine your Shelf Life. Right now, people in parts of the UK are living up to 18 years less than in others. And it's not just down to individual choices. It's because mouldy homes, toxic air, & the struggle to afford the basics, including food, are cutting lives short.

The Minister joins the Department at a pivotal time. Diet-related disease continue to rise, placing unsustainable pressure on the NHS and disproportionately affect some of our most disadvantaged communities. A decisive shift from treatment to prevention is urgently needed ⚠️
