I'm delighted to announce that I'll be joining @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social Psychology as an assistant professor in Fall 2026 π»ππ»π
Deep thanks to my students and colleagues at NUS for four formative years, and to the advisors, family, and friends who've supported me throughout.
New paper accepted at J Neurosci: "Physiological Representation of Social Evaluation," led by Anqi Mao, a PhD student in the lab @ohlab.bsky.social.
Preprint: osf.io/preprints/os...
We validated these patterns. New faces were generated along the modeled directions, and shown to new people, which elicited the predicted responses, but only when people were making social judgments, rather than purely perceptual ones.
So these patterns captured something socially meaningful.
Some personal note:
This is the first paper first-authored by a student of mine. Immensely proud of Anqi Mao for carrying it through. I've admired J Neurosci ever since I can remember. My younger self wouldn't believe he would publish there as the senior author one day.

2) Fixation duration on the eyes + hippocampal firing during fixations were narrowly tuned to threat (dominance, fright, meanness), without the mirrored relationship to trust/likability seen in 1), with eye fixations tracking power and hipp'l fixation firing tracking valence.
3) Amygdala firing was the most specific of all, tracking approachability alone (trustworthiness, likability), unrelated to threat, power, or even other valence-loaded traits like attractiveness.
A narrow and distinct signal from the sample of neurons we were able to record.

We built data-driven models using eye-tracking and human neuronal recording data to identify which facial features correlate with each of these physiological responses. Turns out these responses aren't tracking the same thing: three distinct patterns emerged.
1) Pupil size + hippocampal firing during saccades were driven by integrated judgments of valence and power.
Faces read as negative & high-power (dominant, frightening) drove dilation & increased firing; faces read as positive & low-power (trustworthy, likable) did the opposite.

We know a lot about how facial features shape explicit judgments, like who looks friendly. We know a lot less about how these same features show up in spontaneous physiological responses--what kind of face gets more fixations/ pupil dilation/ amygdalar and hippocampal firings, for example?
Finally out--first paper from my own shop: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Here's more to come!
Now in press at SPPS. Ruled out perceiver effects, stereotypical trait structure, assumed similarity; tested generalizability; and added longitudinal data. Kudos to coauthors @finneazmoner.bsky.social, Natasha Tan, and others.

Very excited for this next chapter!
Thanks to everyone who helped make the culture pre-conference a βsuccessful failure!β We didnβt make the main pre-conference time, but we had a packed house and a great time. #SPSP2026
Honored to be one of the finalists! My project for this award focuses on emotion overgeneralization in trustworthiness judgments, examining cross-cultural patterns in social perception. π
π Today, weβve announced the 25 finalists (+5 special awardees) of the Besample Dissertation Grant!
This new wave of Ph.D. researchers is treating cross-cultural research as the default, not an exception.
Meet this incredible group here π besample.app/dissertation...
Postdoc position!
Myself and @jordanaxt.bsky.social are seeking applications for a shared post-doctoral researcher at McGill, beginning Fall 2026.
Topic area broadly centered on intergroup dynamics, prejudice, discrimination

My new research found when trying to distinguish real faces from AI-generated ones, people with average face-recognition ability performed at chance, and while super-recognisers performed better than other participants, it was only by a slim margin.

Big congratulations to Yuqing Shi @syuqing.bsky.social, a PhD student of mine, on receiving the Besample Dissertation Grant! Really exciting work on cross-cultural face perception. Canβt wait to see where this goes. besample.app/dissertation...
Thank you for the birthday wishes, everyone. Confucius said 40 is when all doubts fade. I still have plenty, but I trust myself enough to keep going anyway (:
Ever heard of the #Wisdom#TuringTest? I thought of creating one for the new #OnWisdom#postcast episode. This is a special episode & I want your help. Tune in: onwisdompodcast.fireside.fm/66

Participants over-attributed AI generation, labeling nearly 60% of all images as syntheticβeven though only half were.
This "AI attribution bias" leads to:

We have a new tutorial out in Social Cog methods issue, a resampling tool we made in R that basically tells you when some average is "stable" and can be used to guide data collection or test hypotheses related to variance. Quick explanation here
