Call the Nightingale

@oldlights.bsky.social

Aspiring author, reluctant world traveller, and astonishingly cynical occasional analyst of international politics. Some things I just do for me. The best hope for all humanity is respect for the law. A law men don't respect is no law at all.

Call the nightingale There is heartache on your lips And your heart's a foreign house And your soul is full of rips But don't be scared of the dark It's been less bite and more bark Don't be scared of the end Life always begins again

First Hungary, then Israel, then India?

Modi has lost it. "The govt has responded by massively increasing the security presence in the capital. Around thirty thousand police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed, internet services have been disrupted, trains to Delhi have been cancelled, metro stations and roads have been closed."

I cannot believe I saw this on my feed. I'm so angry I squeezed my phone hard enough to... I can't even... Ugh, I think I hid all the identifying factors for this account. These people are missing the fucking point.

What must it be like, being the sort of country that gets the average American political ambassador? Are you proud that you're deemed a desirable posting or do you wish you had regular civil wars so you get a real diplomat?

The difference between AI and social media is that one was created by men who decline any responsibility for the damage it wreaks, and the other was created by men who decline any responsibility for the damage it wreaks. Hope that’s cleared it up.

'In a world less similar to our own than it first appears '... That's been the tagline for my book for years, but I've never worked out how to finish the sentence in less than five hundred words. As I need 50, that's a problem.

I'm absolutely lost. I just want to be an author. I've always wanted to be an author. And everyone said writing was the hardest part, but it was easy! It's everything else that's involved now that terrifies me. I

I really hope the suicideation from finishing a book and confronting what comes next is normal. I mean, I guess it being normal would also suck. I have no idea. I feel sick and tired and anxious. Maybe I should just destroy it all.

I am 99.95% finished with this book, and I've reached the point where I think it's rubbish and am actively contemplating suicide. Is that normal? I hope that's normal, I don't need more things wrong with me. Anyway, 99.95% finished. Hurray!

No! The French can't beat us! My fellow Australians, we must ban social media for the under 14s. No, it won't work, but that's not the point. It wasn't the point of banning it for under-16s, after all. If the goal was making it work, there are so many other ways we could have done it. #auspol

And this woman is more credible as opposition leader than Angus 'Well done' Taylor. What's going on with the right in Australia? #auspol

this is one of those facts that is technically true but could do with some context: 1) unlike films, game sales are tricky to track cause there's no one comprehensive and reliable source. So things have to be taken with a grain of salt regardless 2) the HP game in question shares the rank of 20-

I'm trying to read Honourbound, which is supposed to be everything I love in a science fiction book. But it's in present tense and for some reason that's nails on a chalkboard for me. I've never felt like this about a book before. I've also never seen it before, though

Of course he did, he's a horrible person who holds power only because Israel has what might be the worst electoral system in the world. Basic competence was never on his list, he ran on his brother's memory, hatred, and supply deals. Who's surprised? Stop being surprised.

Honestly, considering the kind of things he says and does sober, drugs may be a good thing for Warren.

JD Vance’s comments on Watergate are part of a growing trend of right-wingers who believe that Nixon is “a lodestar for 21st-century Right-wing counterculture.” From the recent archives:

Of course you're not, Barnaby. The similarities are limited to the company you keep. He also hung out with people generally considered bad for society (Zealots), liars (Paul), moneymen who turn on their friends out of innate conservatism (Judas), and whores (Magdalene).

The One Nation Treasury spokesperson sidesteps questions about modelling the inflationary impact of the proposal, saying Australians are "not stupid" and can manage their own money.

In Canavan's defence, the Australian right has decided to join Americans in protecting misinformation at all costs. He's just being consistent in defence of American social media companies that should be banned.

80 year-olds with pro-Palestine signs: arrested as terrorists. Greens planning to block a road, to highlight an existential crisis: sent down for years. Masked far-right thugs blocking roads and ports, using intimidation, obstruction & threatening behaviour: no arrests. The real two-tier policing.

A winner from Labor.

Social media companies would be required to give users a choice to turn off their algorithm through pop-up messages, under draft laws to be unveiled by the government later this week.

Israel's biggest problem is its election system, which allows any nut into the Knesset and then makes those nuts indispensable to forming government. Too many people just accept that their system is democratic on faith; it's little shy of kakistratic. A threshold of 3.25% is a stupid threshold!
