It’s become a sport to plan my train travel so well ahead that I can get the cheapest fares. Very often I pay a third of the standard fare or less. #DSB #orangebilletter #train

I reviewed a pull request where a colleague had converted several immutable #Java classes to record classes. *Soooo* much terser! It hurt to tell them that for backward compatibility we still need getters with names that start with get. #JavaRecords #Java17

@mullvadnet trying to gaslight the #Fediverse about "free speech" and fascism, and posting the same obviously PR-approved response to multiple negative posts about their co-CEO / co-founder donating money to fascists sure is a choice.

De Niro: Loving our country is starting to sound like an abused spouse saying they love their abuser. I can’t love a country that starts stupid and inhumane wars, killing thousands of innocents… I can’t love a country that’s led by a xenophobic tyrant. I can’t love a country that’s led by Trump

The rainbow is here all year long, so we don't need to change the profile for June. But it is a good time to remind everyone that LGBTQIA+ rights are under attack all year long as well. And to steal @haskell.org's message: there would be no Gleam without trans people 🩵🩷🤍

#Jira is blocking me from doing my work. The question pops up at semi-unpredictable times, and there is no way around it and back to Jira page I wanted to work on. It’s a pain.

I admit that before coming to #Jfokus2026 I thought virtual threads in #Java sounded like a good idea, but it was unclear what I wanted to use them for. After the talks and lab in the conference I have a very clear picture.

I spent the day playing with #EclipseCollections. First impression is it can advantageously replace 75 % of #JavaCollectionsFramework. For a few classes, like LinkedHashMap, I didn’t find a good replacement. Luckily the two libraries interoperate surprisingly well. #Java

First time I coded a #sealedInterface in #Java. A method could return 3 different results, each with its own supplementary information. A sealed interface and three implementing record types seemed right.

Of the people praising IntelliJ IDEA (for instance of the occasion of its 25th birthday), how many have been given a license they don’t pay for? How does this contribute to the amount of praise? And how many of them mention the gift along with the praise (I haven’t seen any yet)?

A thread 🧵 of _terrible_ design decisions for the internal APIs of the two Italian high speed train operators, Italo and Trenitalia. Hardcoded passwords, terrible translations, spelling mistakes, xml in json (but utf8 encoded and transmitted as an array of numbers), it's all here. Enjoy!

A colleague objected to using the assert keyword in production Java code. He thinks it will only ever be checked during running unit tests and prefers to have the assertion in the test. 1/2 #Java

(1) No matter if ever checked I want the assertion in the production code since the information it carries helps understand the code. (2) It has been convincingly argued that you also check assertion in staging and production environments. 2/2

My teenager and a friend asked who invented, owns and develops Java. I gave them the very short story from memory. Java was developed by a group lead by James Gosling and was launched by a company named Sun Microsystems Inc. (1/4) #Java #techhistory

Much of the further development — definitely still active — happens in a cooperation with everyone interested (that is, big companies that are willing to play their employees for participating) with Oracle as chair. We’re generally very satisfied with this way and its outcomes. (3/4)

Sun was otherwise mostly known for building (small) computers. Oracle, mostly known for databases, bought Sun at a point because they wanted Java (and after that sold many other parts of Sun off again). (2/4)

I do not 100 % agree to the article’s recommendation to avoid Java’s ZonedDateTime class as fundamentally flawed. While my user may know what is meant by “2:00 PM”, I would like that my program “knows” too. With a Java LocalDateTime alone it does not. A ZonedDateTime makes sure it does.
