My journey from the eminently decipherable retina to the entangled mess that is the mammalian motor system. No turning back now. !https://www.thetransmitter.org/methods/what-to-do-when-traditional-mechanistic-approaches-no-longer-work/

thetransmitter.orgWhen traditional mechanistic approaches no longer workMany complex behaviors have resisted mechanistic explanations. Deciphering them requires new approaches—and maybe a new concept of “understanding.”

“Many people prefer to believe the brutes and the sadists are responsible, largely because they are not like “us”. But modern genocide is the product of … the technocrats, bureaucrats and cold planners of extermination, who don’t get their hands dirty.” www.theguardian.com/global/comme...

theguardian.comHow do human beings explain taking part in genocide? NAZA provides a chilling look | Omer BartovIt’s easier to blame brutes and sadists for extreme violence. But as we see in the documentary, modern genocides are fueled by people who are uncomfortably recognizable

The superposition of these two studies — both incredible — reflect a snapshot of "one big thing" systems neuroscience has yet to resolve. In mice: 1. Task-related signals are everywhere. 2. Absent large swaths of "everywhere," suprisingly sophisticated learning & behavior remains.

Great piece - if you haven't read The Anarchy by @willdalrymple.bsky.social it is essential reading - incredibly well written and researched, and useful for the now times.

Feeling overwhelmed with all of this. LISTEN. Another Louisiana resident (Marshawn is the only name we have) testifies against the state’s racial gerrymander, speaking truth to power up and down the hearing room and predicts how this story will end. Speak your truth, fight and believe.

The bird strikes again🐧. Congrats to all involved!

Where, exactly, does learning happen in the brain? Out today in @nature.com, we identify a synaptic locus of birdsong learning and show that the circuit can be tuned to make birds learn faster - but at a cost. Read on👇 #neuroskyence 🧪 #prattle 💬 #bioacoustics Shareable link: rdcu.be/fiyrS

How did singing mouse evolve its song? Two research manuscripts published today shed light on peripheral and central circuit modifications underlying this novel vocal capacity.

🐝 In 1988, three Georgia Tech engineers heard an NPR segment on how bees allocate foragers with no central authority. One joked: "Would bees be better if they hired us as consultants?" NSF and the Navy funded them to find out. They tracked 4,000 labeled bees for three years.

I think this deserves at least as much sustained attention from US media as Claudine Gay's dissertation

This is Ferdowsi Sq central Tehran. People on the ground say the bombing campaign is beyond anything they have seen and seemingly indiscriminate. Increasingly, Israel and the US appear to be following the Gaza playbook, having failed to achieve a quick regime implosion.

Feels like a pivotal moment. The president is screening a movie about his third wife and crying about a lawsuit challenging his guilded ballroom, while good-hearted Americans looking out for their neighbor are getting murdered by state police. Will Americans finally wake up?

Goodbye, my friend. Miss you!

Adam Kampff prioritized spreading knowledge over publishing flashy papers in prestigious journals, but colleagues say his mark on neuroscience was undeniable. The researcher and educator passed away on 9 December. By Lauren Schneider www.thetransmitter.org/systems-neur...

Well said, Rui. Adam was one of a kind. Gentle, warm, funny, genuine, and smart. His ability to cut through bullshit and see the big picture catalyzed great science wherever he went. He loved life and shared his joy generously. A huge inspiration. Thanks for all the beautiful memories, my friend!

Rui Costa@ruimcosta.bsky.social

Last night Adam Kampff, the glue, the light, the catalyst, the builder, the smile, left us. He and his work transformed the lives of many labs, scientists, students. He inspired and was generous to his last transformation, working tirelessly to set up a foundation to continue the work.Thank you!

Great opportunity!
