"There's nothing more practical than a good theory"

Brandon Friedman@brandonfriedman.bsky.social

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."

So genuine question but after the Democratic party wallops the Republicans in the elections (and they will, just a matter of a sound win or a rout), like. What next lmao. Do we just. Not have a second party, effectively?

It's funny/not funny how passé it is now to even say "Remember when the GOP was the party of fiscal responsibility

Somehow got ahead. Followed something. Jump the tractors, go on foot in suits. Find a dead man in an improv dust cloak and buggy. Evade the xeno once, twice. Get inside, shut the doors, seal the vents and try to dust off before it arrives. It's in the ship! Take off.

Finagle it outside. Maglock your boots. Race against time in your beat to hell dustsuit fighting a xeno. Throw it off, your buddy burns it in the drive plume. Arrive, and have to talk to not marshals, but a parent company that isn't WY at least. Credits?

protect you. Make it ten klicks and there's an automated refiner with a transfer tug. Take that, swing to the orbital station, sit tight for the Marshals or the next pickup. Commotion. Alien ate through several grates, it's in the vents. Panic. Rush to get out. Burn through a door, get into the...

surveyor garage. Pull the manual just like the parent showed, ride out on a Daihotai trailer. Got a buddy, same idea. Their radio's damaged, morse send only. Some calm. The long drive in the sand. Slow conversations. Make a friend whose face you don't know. One klick out. Xenomorph's here.

Protagonist rushes to the door. Screaming, then cut off. Lockdown protocol. Cut, timeskip one week. Marshals are coming. The generators died two days ago and water, food is becoming an issue. Waste disposal too. Protagonist's been preparing. Outside's survivable. Dust scours, but dustsuits...

I think overall AR still falls flat because it's trying too hard to be striking, yet not confident enough to be striking. The miners and the canary are profoundly out of place to me. The constant callbacks, the rifle action sequence, god the callbacks. Please bro you can cook stop consulting...

...the recipe. I haven't gotten around to Covenant or Prometheus, but honestly I don't hold much hope. The sauce is GONE, visually. Maybe do a different xenomorph. XX-121 is the 121st alien of note we found. What others? What horrors plague other colonies?

Alien, complete unknown. Tension comes of learning as the crew does, seeing each play-counterplay. Alien 2, new scenario. Introduce elite military, high spec smart soldiers. Again, same deal. Alien 3, a sort of in-between of A1 and A2, but you can feel the concept getting tired out. The ending...

...is just kind of okay, but it feels like the best it could've been. Alien Romulus feels a bit cheap. Setting aside the callback spam, it's A1 that tries to segue into A2 and kinda just fails. The strongest part imo is the opener, showing life on a work colony.

I honestly think that the most that can be done with Alien is parlay it into universe detailing stories. United Americas feds in a W-Y town on tenuous authority. Colonial Marines going into a black op dustup with TWE regulars. Like maybe you can run Alien in the UPP or something but you have to...

...not flanderize the UPP as Soviet Russia 2. The UPP is a peer power, voluntarily entered by the desperate scrapings of Earth, and socialist. Personally quite attached to its evil being more cold, more remote. The machine of State crushes you underfoot by accident. So it goes. Remediation is...

my coldest take is that ridley scott is a washed up has been that captured lightning in a bottle, and should've retired but for his leviathan ego. apropos of nothing hes taking command of alien Romulus script writing.

Utterly unrelated but the idea of Astolfo and a Clauswitz portrait-person having an academic discussion is rather amusing. This is a sharp and continuing benefit of my habit of picturing avatars as the people behind the screen.

Which liberal states have empowered a man of action during the state of exception? There doesn’t seem to be a clear pattern of it happening, as Schmitt would predict. Democracies fail, sure, but not particularly because of some great crisis.

now that i think about it i probably need to add more breaching equipment. or make some worked examples for breaching methods. the problem is that once you introduce automated defenses you need also ways of overcoming them.

More and more I am struck by the wish-fantasy of just being able to remake everything. Unaccountable violence and the whatnot. Y'know, becoming superman alone. Honestly impressed at his self restraint to not just glass everything he dislikes and move on.

I will reiterate that we are going to find out BorPat has just been straight shooting immigrants before they get over the border, post-Trump. Like, once their bureaucratic shield evaporates, we're just going to bear witness to at least three distinct atrocities.

>anywhere from six to almost twenty-four fucking divisions worth of personnel taken out of service depending on divisional size >two and change to almost fourteen divisions of dead people. At least to wikipedia, RuFed standing army is uh. 25, divisions, including airborne. Obv grain of salt but.

Dark Laughter@darklaughtertdb.bsky.social

I'm trying to wrap my head around losing this many divisions worth of guys just in one year that isn't even half over.

Most people think proxy fuzes are on SAMs to improve pH/K, but actually they're to prevent this from happening. At a guess whoever was flying the F5 figured out how to exploit something in its fuzing logic.

Ah, I see. Patriot missile cut in half by the wings. Makes sense now unfortunately.

my view is mostly from the civil defense space. in an ideal world the civil firearm is obsolete, but we very obviously dont live in the world with a high quality LE system. at that point the repeating long arm needs to be pretty compelling case by case to exist in civil hands.

Nem@nemrtvi.bsky.social

Cold take. I hear this idea a lot, where people say "just put everything on a registry" but even if it were possible to register every single gun made I don't see how it would reduce crime. Getting rid of long guns in the US is about as realistic as eradicating mosquitos in a rainforest.

That's a very interesting threat analysis. I think the thing is mainly that you have to demonstrate willingness on that front though.

Depends entirely on how the war ends, but if we put a nato brigade in Ukraine, that puts the same question to the Russians. If they attack anyway, evidently they believe a conventional war can be fought between nuclear powers, and there’s little chance we could avoid such a war.

I know this is probably some awful internet specific mixture of insanity but think about risk/reward to maintain a grid of ragebait accounts comp to any other psyops campaign in history. Get progressives to leave in disgust, get conservatives an easy dunk on a "liberal". Assets are near zero risk...

"My enemies are an international league of pedophilic dictator-aspirants" should be a sentence that only makes sense in an absurd polemic media. Instead it does seem to be the truth of 2026.
