9. fellowship of the ring. easily the film I have rewatched the most. tolkien’s story and world latched hold of my mind and has yet to let go.
I’ve always felt moved by the love the fellowship show each other, particularly frodo and sam. this probably gave me my first stirrings of homoromantic love
7. poor things. yorgos lanthimos’ triumph. a gorgeous movie dripping with love and craftsmanship over every frame. every time I watch it my breath gets stolen by the cinematography.. and then I’m laughing my fucking ass off. CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNT!!!
8. pan’s labyrinth. a poignant story by master of dark fantasy guillermo del toro, it’s yet another one that spoke to me, with a plucky young girl protagonist facing against a turbulent home life in the midst of rising fascism.
plus, I kinda named myself after ofelia 🤷♀️
5. the witch
another entry in Good For Her cinema. I love historical settings played straight, and this movie goes to pains to make you feel like you’re right there with the puritans, terrified of shadows in the woods
apparently the director hates how this one turned out, but it’s one of my darlings
3. tomboy. this one is more indicative of a category of movie I watched in my teen years: pensive movies about gender that don’t really come to any concrete conclusions.
featuring a deeply tender portrayal of trans/genderqueer childhood that still tugs on my heart to think about
4. annihilation. another one where my love of the movie is mostly based on my love of the book. I think about this movie and this story so often, it really activates both the sci-fi and weird fiction lover in me.
unfortunately I’ve hated where alex garland has gone as a director since this.
1. dogtooth. watched this one in high school, and it sparked a lifelong love of weird cinema generally, and yorgos lanthimos in particular. funny, deeply fucked up movie about escaping familial abuse
2. let the right one in. the movie affected me, the book fucked me up. it’s like if twilight was a sparse, bleak swedish film that took its premise to evil conclusions.
featuring a main character who’s deeply relatable yet seems like he could be a serial killer one day. also weird gender stuff
real gut punch to rewatch Poor Things, one of my favorite “she just like me for real” movies, and realize with dread that I feel like recently I’ve been more like duncan wedderburn
