Hot off the press! We have made our 2026 ORFG Funder Policy Landscape Analysis and Recommendations public! 🎉 This report analyzes access-to-research policies of ORFG members and other private funders of open research and open outputs.

For private funders the #CostofKnowledge is front of mind when they develop policy and when the select awarded projects. How can funding dollars be most effective? How can projects be financially efficient? The ORFG Funder Policy Landscape Analysis makes 5 recommendations to ensure funding efficacy.

✔️ Develop incentives & workflows complementing policy requirements. Funders should invest in the human resources it takes to support awardees to meet open policy requirements. This means: implementing systems that handle robust metadata, awardee training, and monitoring & incentivizing compliance.

✔️ Expand data management plan requirements and support existing data principles and practices. Sharing data that can't be used because it lacks integrity, open licensing, and/or appropriate metadata means the money is wasted.

✔️ Strategically accelerate preprint adoption. Funders care about sharing the knowledge, not paying for-profit publishers to gate keep and profit from exorbitant article processing charges.

Here's briefly how they do that: ✔️ Eliminate embargo periods: Why spend money to limit sharing? ✔️ Partner with open infrastructure providers. Use the existing community-governed open infrastructures that exist and improve them, instead of putting funds into developing things from scratch.

We're super excited to share the launch of our new website, with a new color palette and logos. We're still the same funders collaborative that cares about improving the open ecosystem. We: ✅️ build community ✅️ facilitate knowledge exchange, and ✅️ extend our influence. Check it out! www.orfg.org

Hot off the press! We have made our 2026 ORFG Funder Policy Landscape Analysis and Recommendations public! 🎉 This report analyzes access-to-research policies of ORFG members and other private funders of open research and open outputs.

📈 We found that funders' policies have been evolving to more often require open practices rather than simply recommend them. As an example, preprint requirements have increased 18% since the ORFG’s 2023 member policy analysis.

➡️ While there have been improvements in funder policies supporting a more open ecosystem, there is continued work to do and improvements that funders can make in their policies. Based on its findings, the report makes 5 recommendations for funders to advance open outputs in policy and practice:
