Tonight's vampire movie doesn't have the word vampire in it, but it does have a hell of a stylish neo-western and dare I say even neo-noir flare to it-Kathryn Bigelow's gorgeous, stylistic 1987 Near Dark. Bill Paxton in scene-stealer mode.

Look, the sooner ppl just fucking accept that SNL is and has long been part of the problem, the better. STOP WATCHING THE SHOW THAT GIVES SHANE GILLIS/ELON/DONALD a ducking platform, you stupid fucks.

If it wasnโ€™t for Lorne Michaels, Iโ€™m pretty sure I would never have heard of the wildly unfunny Shane Gillis.

I remember people said Annika and I were overreacting when we said "absolutely not" when the premise of Hill House was revealed to be a reimagining, divorced from Shirley Jackson's work as filtered thru Flanagan.

I'm pretty sure Vampire's Kiss is the unholy spawn of George Romero's Martin (77) and American Psycho... did Brett EE do a lot of coke while watching Vampire's Kiss and then he wrote AP? I'm just speculating but...

Continuing in a comedic vein (narf) thanks to tubi roulette with Amy Heckerling's 2012 Vamps, which is cute. The first 30 or so were a bit hard for me but I eased into the tone and relaxed and had a good time with the last 40 or so. Come for "Clueless w/ Fangs" stay for criticism of the patriot act.

We went back to NYC last night- a lot of vampires in that city- to watch Nic Cage in 1988's Vampire's Kiss, some truly incredible work. Truly incredible whatever the fuck he was doing (Annika suggests channeling Norma Desmond). I'm pretty sure the movie itself is a solid dark comedy.

Last night we danced gothic to Tony Scott's 1983 debut, The Hunger a movie that slinks stylishly around some really interesting ideas, and sort of just... keeps going until the EC Comics ending. All my goth pals in the 90s loved this movie. I do not.

Had to wash The Hunger out of our mouths, so we revisited a not-so-old favorite, Neil Jordan's very excellent Byzantium. For a movie that could lean grim, nihilistic or tragic, this is a very hopeful, gentle movie about consent. And vampire "sisters" Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton- tremendous.

Last night we watched Xan Cassavetes' 2012 Kiss of the Damned, a throwback to 70s vampire eroticism- this movie is glorious in its languid sensuality, not afraid to get messy, and creative in its embrace of many of the familiar trappings- done just differently enough to feel invigoratingly fresh.

Tubi is really hitting it in the vampire flix- check it, from my Oct list alone, on tubi: Daughters of Darkness, Let The Right One In, Kiss of the Vampire, Kiss of the Damned, DEF by Temptation, Scream Blacula Scream, Blacupa, Subspecies, Habit, The Hunger, Vampire in Brooklyn, Fright Night... ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Happy October 1st, or as we call it in my home "the release date of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in 1974". May your autumn days be as beautiful as if Daniel Pearl was shooting them.

The Arena showdown from Sergio Corbucci's The Mercenary (1968) > The Graveyard Showdown from Sergio Leone's The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.. However Leone's film is the better overall movie, imho.

"There is no ethical consumption of HP while Joanne uses her wealth and power to cause harm" is an easy and clear boundary to set. Use my words if you don't have your own. "Some fuckin guy on the internet said-"

Back in the 80s I was under the impression that the cyber-age would involve us jacking into the matrix thru our com-decks and bio-implants keeping our Surge levels topped off for maximum extreme in the neon drenched eternal darkness of the cyber-night. Instead we got... this.

Anyway, yeah - just sitting down at the negotiating table over someone's human dignity means you've already let the vampire through the door

Things I was frightened of when I was a child. 1. The dark, especially being in a room in the moment after the switch is turned off. 2. Basements 3. Walking up the stairs with the dark behind me. 4. Nuclear war 5. My father

Things I was frightened off when I was a child. 1. The tree in the back garden 2. The wooden breakwaters on the beach 3. Climbing the wooden bars in PE (but not the ropes) 4. That empty house on Newland Road that was definitely being used by the IRA in 73/74 5. Really hot food or drinks.

The Raid: Redemption but- perspective switch- the protags are the complex ensemble that live in the tenement high rise, and the villains are the invading faceless federal cops who are basically purging witnesses floor by floor. Survival horror/action.

Name a film you'd like to remake.

Taylor Sheridan scripts are like if David Ayers scripts cleaned up to meet your parents and still talk about fucked up tactical bro shit, but (kind of) tastefully. Somberly and self-importantly instead of giddily and defiantly.
