Yesterday the UK Govt approved the Jackdaw gas field. ONZ academics recently co-led an open letter to the Secretary of State at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero arguing that approval of new oil and gas licences should come with a carbon storage obligation. The chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C with no overshoot is gone. But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100. Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century. New #EmissionsGap Report: https://ow.ly/SNHX50ZZz8l

The planet will keep getting hotter, even with ongoing efforts to slow the temperature rise. But choices exist.   Every fraction of a degree prevented, & every year by which the overshoot period is shortened, will save lives, protect ecosystems, & reduce economic losses. More: tinyurl.com/2vb9krpj

Jim Skea, IPPC chair: “If you want to stop global warming, you must get to net zero carbon emissions. If you don’t get to net zero, the world will continue warming, and all the things we’re seeing at the moment will get more intense and more challenging. That’s basically the choice.”
