For Day 8 #spacetober_challenge prompt supernova: Sophie Brahe (1559 or 1556 -1643) 🧪🐡👩🏼‍🔬🔭 horticulturalist, astronomer, genealogist, & alchemist with the gardens at her brother #astronomer Tycho Brahe’s Uraniborg estate, where she often assisted his research, alchemical tools & illustrations of the

Hadn't seen ISS in an eon, so decided to catch it this evening. After setting up in a clear-ish spot among the trees at our place, I went for a clearer view of the horizon to see when it was climbing, then decided that would be a better viewpoint, so hastily moved the tripod. Meh. Not enuf time. 🔭

When I first heard of ChatGPT, and the DALLE•2 image generator, I spent some finding out what they did, and where they fell down—and I must say, I found out pretty quickly how fallible they were, which makes it all the more surprising to me that lawyers and academics have been tripped up by LLMs.

Here's a composite of 3 DALLE•2 images from 2022-2023. The prompts were: 'dark mendacity', 'the stillness of wondering', and 'an unknown quantity balancing on the edge of nothing'. Whimsical little sketches. (Might only show the central image in the triptych, in the preview.)

Tonight's images from the same prompts: 'dark mendacity', 'the stillness of wondering', and 'an unknown quantity balancing on the edge of nothing'. Altogether more detailed and rich, but also, especially with those prompts, seeming creepily allegorical in the face of what AI is becoming. Umm...

After discovering the LLM's tendency to fabrication, I started to play with image generation—in particular, throwing nonsensical, abstract prompts at it, to see what came out. That was in 2022-2023. I've just gone back to the current version of ChatGPT to see how it handled some of those prompts.

Among other things, it shows how dim the Moon is, compared to Venus. Venus is around 6 times more reflective than the Moon, and the level of sunlight is about half that at Venus, so per unit area, it's about 12 times brighter, or 3.5 stops in photographic terms.

Here's a later one, near end of twilight. About 2.3° between them now. 🔭 Taken with a 50-year-old Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm zoom leans that I was given recently. Performs decently, IMHO.

"Hatred draws itself on your face and it doesn't use nice pens." You have a way with words, my man.

Nigel Farage is 62? I thought he was late 60s, absolute minimum. It's always the same with these racist sacks of dysentery. Like when I found out Katie Hopkins was born in 1975. Hatred draws itself on your face and it doesn't use nice pens.

As much as I'm comfortable with everyday maths (oh, the joy when I found a real-life need for solving simultaneous equations, years after school), and am happy building spreadsheets, and converting light-years to kilometres, I can't abide sudoku. Ick.

"Bokeh" doesn't mean that parts of a photo are out-of-focus; it means how those parts appear, depending upon the lens design, and aperture used.

What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

Hard light. An engineer, engaged in pure research, stumbles on a method of generating a metre-long beam of light from an old flashgun grip. A workplace safety enquiry is launched after the device unexpectedly severs the arm of his lab assistant son who cries "no, that's not true; that's impossible."

Pitch your most pointless, dull prequel idea that could potentially be greenlit in this idea-starved world. DIRTY: In which we learn how Harry Callahan earned his nickname.

We used to give mossies to our zebra fish. Quite amusing, watching them rapidly fold the legs and body into their mouths.

I found videos from that time a jumper spadooder lived in the corner of my bedroom so I fed it mosquitoes daily. I think it's a female Plexippus petersi.

It's a fallacy that Galileo said "Eppur si muove", and little reason to give credence to the notion that he said "Ragazze dal sedere grosso, siete voi che fate girare il mondo del rock".

Your reminder that fairy tales are full of stepmothers because women once routinely died in childbirth, from postpartum sepsis, or from other infectious diseases and left behind housefuls of motherless children. Stable nuclear families are made possible by vaccines, antibiotics, and safe abortions.

There's a certain feeling of kinship when reading a second-hand book, and you find yourself folding a page corner as a bookmark and notice someone else marked the same page - especially if it's not at the start of a new chapter.
