Starting today, I am a CNRS Research Fellow at @pacea.bsky.social! After 6 years of moving around Germany, Spain, and UK, meeting amazing colleagues, and spending way too much time in the field developing ESR dating methods accross Africa, I’m finally back in 🇫🇷 ! Very excited for this new chapter!

New publication: Peiqi Zhang, Nicolas Zwyns et al. present a detailed technological analysis of the stone tools from Nwya Devu, an exceptional site located on the Tibetan Plateau at 4,600 m above sea level, occupied during MIS 3.
@univbordeaux.bsky.socialdoi.org/10.1016/j.pa...
With no known technological antecedents in the neighbouring regions of East Asia, the Nwya Devu assemblage suggests connections with Initial Upper Palaeolithic blade traditions documented farther north across the Eurasian Steppe.
These findings provide important new insights into the dispersal of Homo sapiens and its ability to move into extreme high-altitude environments during the Late Pleistocene.

The study shows that lithic production relied on a genuine Upper Palaeolithic blade system, focused on the production of large blades. The relatively limited investment in core preparation and maintenance may reflect the site’s function as a lithic workshop located close to raw material sources.
Congratulations @Maëlwenn Le Vélly on this cool article highlighting the value of CT imaging for the study and preservation of mummified remains! Happy as well of the collaboration with the University of Toulouse and the Toulouse Natural History Museum. @pacea.bsky.sociallnkd.in/eAag8AfH

Adeline Le Cabec from our lab participated in this new study on Neanderthal growth! Amud 7, the most complete Neanderthal infant skeleton, reveals unusually rapid early-life growth. This discovery suggests Neanderthals may have followed a unique, fast developmental pattern.🧪🏺
