I don’t know if I’ve done this before but it’s World Penguin Day so the least I can do is post some of my comic work in this horizontal mode BlueSky is cooking. Keep in mind this is very old stuff from the very beginning:

I love my art but I feel I need to take a break from my art. Something about it isn’t working, I need to get new perspectives, rather than forcing myself to do stuff that isn’t bringing me any joy. Ultimately I’m doing this all for myself, after all, if I’m not happy with it, what is the point?

I’m starting to realize that some of my struggles with making art right now stem from how I feel about the world right now. I love my stuff but the world keeps falling apart like a bonus round car in Street Fighter 2

And I’m not saying I shouldn’t but I am saying I’m struggling to make sense of my role in things. And it really sucks to say that my dream project feels wrong to spend time on but I’m having one of those moments with it right now.

I say as I hide in the basement. I don’t know! I want to make good work. I want to honor my ideas by realizing them. Just so much of what put me on this path feels like a dead world. I don’t know how to resolve that feeling about things.

I’m really scared. I know we all have reasons to be scared, and I’ve been scared for lots of good reasons but right now…I feel overwhelmed. I don’t know how not to feel that way, and I don’t want to feel like I’m even coming close to lying to myself about anything.

I know it’s sorta cheesy but someone posted this from Paris on Reddit and I felt this immediate rush of hope

Okay, that’s it, thanks everyone. I’m taking a forced break from the Internet, I’m going to focus my efforts in other places, and when I prepare to come back I’m going to curate my feed as heavily as possible because I cannot handle knowing about these kinds of people

Had a very strange dream where a fictional version of a friend and I where staying somewhere with a Japanese family. I say fictional because this version of my friend spoke Japanese and I do not, in dreams or otherwise.

In spite of this being a much more rational outcome, I couldn’t quite shake the feeling that I had the more correct read on the situation and my friend was avoiding the conflict by keeping me in the dark about what was actually being said.

At one point the head of the family gestured to my friend and she spoke with him for an extended period of time gesturing to him, me, the other two, and they way they were leaving garbage and behaving in the home. Again, I could not understand them, but I intuited we were being asked to handle them

There was something going on, a large TV screen in the home playing some kind of PlayStation 1-looking game but the screen was large enough that actually entirely separate play areas were occurring on it, lit lit areas in a darkened field. It was not co-op, or competitive.

I think the different play areas were actually entirely unrelated scenarios allowed to come and go as people picked up and put down controllers. A party of sorts, but the play experiences were all individualized. It was all very informal and it was seamless with the socialization.

It is important to not attempt a literal aim with the color choices, it’s much more important to convey the feel, the energy, the tension or action, than making sure a wall is the same color panel to panel.

Ultimately there’s a lot of ways to color a page, and a handful of very wrong ways to go about it as well. For my own purposes I’m beginning to see little advantage in attempting consistency with my coloring. Color is just another aspect of the composition and needs to suit the page it is on.
