Helen O'Sullivan, a grandmother and member of the Gaza Flotilla, was arrested yesterday in Brisbane under the Qld LNP's draconian anti-free speech laws. Solidarity with Helen and everyone else charged for opposing Israel's genocide and fighting for Palestinian freedom.

Older people have been saying this for months. Labor's automation of aged care assessments has been a disaster, under-assessing need and priority, denying care and driving up waitlists. It's past time to bin the whole thing and put humans back in charge of decision-making.

If you're following events in Parliament House you'll know that Senate estimates hearings are happening this week. Sadly, I won’t be able to participate this time. My husband Darin is recovering from a serious health condition and will require care while he gets back on his feet.

Family must come first, but naturally I’m disappointed I won’t be there. Estimates is an essential accountability mechanism and I was looking forward to getting some answers on aged care assessments, Centrelink payment suspensions, private school accountability and much more.

Fortunately my Greens Senate colleagues will be able to ask some questions in my absence – a big thank-you to them and their teams! 💚🙏 There’s a small chance I might be able to join remotely for a portion of the hearings later in the week. I’ll post again when I know more.

Today the Greens put up our amendment to the government’s escalation pathway bill to finally put clinical human override back in aged care assessments. It was very disappointing to see the Coalition fold, and side with the government to defeat our amendment, and pass this half-measure unchanged.

Our amendment was an opportunity to use the leverage of the Senate to secure human override and deliver fair outcomes for older Australians. But the Coalition folded, and voted with the government on this, even though they recognised in debate on the bill that “it does nothing to fix the problem”.

The Greens will continue fighting, through the Support at Home inquiry that I’m chairing, to restore human override by clinicians and scrap the Integrated Assessment Tool entirely.

The experts have been clear, this escalation pathway is entirely inadequate. It lets the Department mark its own homework and set its own rules. It doesn’t fix the broken Integrated Assessment Tool’s algorithm. And it doesn’t put clinicians back in control of assessments.

If you're head of the business lobby and you want the Labor Party to do something for you, simply text Anthony Albanese personally and he'll get onto it right away! 🫡

This Anti-Poverty Week, remember: poverty isn't an accident, it's a policy choice - and it's getting worse under Labor. Nearly 4 million Australians live in poverty, including one in six children. That's 757,000 kids robbed of safety and security & facing a battle for survival.

The Greens would raise the rate of income support, build public housing, and fully fund the public health and education systems - and we'd make wealth-hoarding billionaires and the big corporations pay for it.

Labor talks about easing cost of living pressures, but there's no "easing" poverty. Poverty means housing insecurity and homelessness, it means hunger and deprivation, it means relying on crumbling public services hammered by funding cuts and privatisation.

Labor’s home care co-payments have forced older people off essential supports, but it’s even crueller for Stolen Generations survivors whose redress payments are means tested. This injustice can’t continue. Labor should back the Greens push to exempt redress from means testing.

What you'll hear about at this event tomorrow: - change needed to remote area allowance, a $9 supplement payment for people in remote areas - challenging debts & accessing waivers for Centrelink & child support-related FTB debts - unlawful Centrelink payment cancellations & to assert your rights.

What does the inequality crisis look like? This 👇 98% of public schools are underfunded – that’s 2.6 million kids without the resources they need for the education they deserve. Yet the richest private schools are charging massive fees while banking billions of public dollars.

The funding model is failing our kids. Australia has one of the most segregated and privatised school systems in the OECD. Instead of giving every kid the chance to thrive we’re entrenching privilege and worsening inequality.

The private school lobby claims they’re relieving pressure on the public school system, but that’s a false economy. Public schools are so underfunded that out-of-pocket costs are soaring and teachers are dipping into their own pockets to pay for classroom supplies.

Louise is 71, on the pension, and terrified of her next rent rise. Her story is one I hear from older Queenslanders all the time. If you live alone, the pension doesn't cover living costs. No income support payment does.

After years of lower pay and unpaid caring, women often retire with less super than men, so that means they're more likely to end up couch-surfing or sleeping in their cars. If Louise's rent goes up again, she doesn't know where she'll go.

Labor sets these payments and they could fix this tomorrow. Lift the pension and income support so people can keep a roof over their heads. Cap rent increases and build public housing now. Secure housing shouldn't be treated as a luxury.

This is your brain on neoliberalism: the problem isn't that your wages are falling and big corporations are gouging you for every cent, the problem is that you're just not comparing prices enough!

Labor is letting Big Tech run rampant while it mumbles about productivity and the PM gives speeches in New York. And they still haven't put in a single law to protect us. Embarrassing.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says OpenAI's "AI agent infiltrated" a Australian government website for healthcare statistics, accessing non-public information. PM says the company took three months to tell Australia.

We don’t have time for this. About 250 Australians die every year from heatwaves. That number is projected to sky-rocket to 6000 by 2100. The major parties are choosing their fossil fuel donors over people’s lives. A green transition means a liveable future for all of us.

Deidre's husband waited months for a special chair he desperately needed. It arrived two weeks after he died. Labor's aged care reforms are a disaster: blowing out waitlists, denying care and forcing people off supports. Growing old should be a joy, not a struggle for survival.

Labor backbenchers have been out in force the past few days spruiking "increases" in Centrelink payments. To be very, very clear: this is absolute bullshit. This is an automatic CPI adjustment, not an increase. Labor is still keeping people on income support in poverty.

In 2022 Labor promised to scrap compulsory income control. They lied. Now they've extended it INDEFINITELY on the quiet. The Greens tried to undo this in the Senate last week but Labor and the LNP blocked us. I'm chairing a hearing tomorrow where I'll be demanding some answers.

For almost a year now we’ve listened to the Aged Care minister defend the broken home support assessment system. Now we learn he wasn't briefed on the tool depriving clinicians of oversight until three days before the changes took effect.

This Minister is completely out of his depth, and this is characteristic of the government’s reckless and botched implementation of their aged care reforms. How can older Australians trust this government anymore?

Queensland’s LNP government has signed away our power and data to a trillion-dollar company. The site in Western Downs will use the same amount of energy as 1.5 million households. That’s 44x the population there! The community didn't ask for this. Moratorium now.

Every time Labor, the LNP and One Nation punch down on immigrants, they're providing cover for supermarkets gouging us at the checkout, banks raising our mortgages and the billionaires hoarding our wealth. The same corporations and billionaires that fund their political operations!

It's all well and good to have a select committee into how the government is going to use AI. But it's kind of beside the point when we don't even have guardrails for the use of AI, and we've got people warning about its catastrophic risks. What is Labor playing at?

This is disturbing. Basketball Australia is rolling out IDF-linked AI software to record children. Australia doesn't have the regulatory guardrails in place to safeguard the use of AI surveillance tools like this - how can parents and carers be sure their kids will be safe?

Deepcut News@deepcutnews.bsky.social

Israeli AI-powered cameras could soon be recording thousands of Australian children, if a Basketball Australia proposal goes ahead. Pixellot - which has links to the IDF - has been selected for a proposed national system set to record junior games. www.deepcutnews.com/p/basketball...

There are massive culture problems at some of our most elite private schools. So many reports of misogyny, harassment & abuse - yet despite the millions they get in public funding, school leadership is rarely held accountable. We can't keep letting them play by their own rules.

I raised concerns with the Education Minister that Marist College Ashgrove in Brisbane appeared to be in breach of its obligations under the Education Act. He confirmed to me last week in correspondence that his department has launched an investigation.

In Australia, millionaire mortgage brokers can simply buy time to lobby the Prime Minister. They just have to donate money to charities that only need to exist because industries like theirs make massive profits at the expense of public services and supports. Great system!

UK sanctions on illegal West Bank settlements are insufficient, but they're a start. The pressure is working. This move is the direct result of the political pain the free Palestine movement is causing UK Labour. Solidarity with those who continue risking freedom for justice.

We're only eight days into spring and Queensland is in flames. This is runaway global heating. This is what happens when weak politicians addicted to corporate cash let coal and gas companies write government policy. Labor must act. No more coal. No more gas. Transition now.

Spare me this performative bullshit, Senator. The thousands lost in Nepal and Tibet died because political parties like yours have been bought by fossil fuel dollars. It’s that simple. You say you have “sympathy”? Not enough sympathy to stop cooking the planet apparently.

Labor has approved yet another coal project, extending it to 2055. Fossil fuels are incompatible with a liveable future. Far North Qld will be most at risk of sea level rises and heat-related deaths. We need a government that works for everyday people, not corporations.
