This is the perfect opportunity to show how easy it would be to be a lab leak ‘sleuth’ (derogatory). Suppose a new flu strain did come from this mink farm in Provo, Utah… Say, no! To the official story. Employ countermeasures. Gogogadget Google for a nearby lab.

Kevin Uhrmacher@kevinuhrm.bsky.social

Wild new story from @natlash.bsky.social Bird flu has been raging uncontrolled on a mink farm for two months. Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. But officials haven’t acted, instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade. www.propublica.org/article/bird...

Great to see this published, and heartbreaking what Trump admin and frenzy lab leak mania amplified by too many destroyed. Read the whole thread, and the paper, and think about it.

Peer-reviewed paper published this week reports a group of new SARS-related bat CoVs in Thailand, & demonstrates proof-of-concept you can get actionable public health data from wildlife sampling. 1/ 🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s42...

Here's a properly scanned image of the ACE2 receptor binding assay results showing RpuRB21065's ability to bind as well as the surrogate neutralization test using vaccinated sera:

This work is part of 20+ yr intl. collaboration among scientists in USA, China, Southeast Asia leading to dozens of important discoveries but disrupted by conspiracies around the origins of COVID-19. We are grateful to our collaborators/co-authors & to the US & intl. agencies funding this work. 11/

We hypothesized that RpuRB21065's close relationship to SARS-CoV-2 meant that prior COVID infection or vaccination cross-protect against this virus. Using two different state-of-the-art serology assays we showed that that prior infection or vaccination would indeed be protective. 8/

This work demonstrates proof-of-concept for a risk assessment pipeline that can be applied to other viruses, wildlife, geographic regions where the host cell receptor for a virus is known & serology tests are set up 9/

We’ve already found evidence that some bat guano harvesters & local community members had antibodies against a range of bat-CoVs & other worrying viruses: i.e. evidence they’d been exposed/infected living near & working in the cave 6/

What we found in bat samples was striking – a group of new bat-CoVs closely related to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. One of these (RpuRB21065) can bind human ACE2 almost as well as SC-2 & better than RaTG13, suggesting potential for infecting people 7/

With @niaidnews.bsky.social CREID funding formerly to EcoHealth Alliance & in collaboration w/ Chulalongkorn Univ., Duke-NUS, Thai Red Cross & others, we sampled bats & people at Ratchaburi Cave 1 hr West of Bangkok where ~3million bats fly out every night & locals gather to watch the spectacle 4/

Our work directly answers questions about the value of proactive surveillance in wildlife as part of a global strategy to prevent pandemics. We laid out a plan for this in a 2022 PNAS paper, calling it One Health “Smart Surveillance”. 2/ www.pnas.org/doi/full/10....

By targeting our viral discovery fieldwork on known zoonotic reservoir species in emerging disease hotspots, at sites where humans wildlife & livestock coexist & where people have high-risk exposure pathways, we maximize chances of identifying & helping prevent spillover of new viruses 3/

Here's a neat thing! My mom retired after 25+ as a children's librarian at public libraries yesterday. (It was very cool! Hundreds of former Story Hour kids arrived, some as adults!) I let Ed Markey's office know in case they wanted to send a nice email back and they sent this! He's still got it!

I am sure the Coal Baron is magically gonna reverse his position on lab leak when a Sarbecovirus with a functional FCS at S1/S2 is found, right? Of course not, he will double down and claim that when nature created it, isn´t it so much more likely the lab found it secretly and used it as template?

A new contender for least accurate article on COVID-19 origins ever: arxiv.org/abs/2608.20416 Abstract pictured here. But I think Bannan still holds the crown given that his article somehow passed peer review despite being a compilation of years old conspiracy theories (plus new errors).

Zach Hensel@zachhensel.bsky.social

This is the least accurate article on COVID-19 origins I’ve ever read. And I’m including the one that hypothesized that it came from outer space. faseb.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1096/...

Since Kadlec’s grabbing NIH funds, here’s a reminder that he can’t tell fact from fiction: www.the-gallop.com/bob-kadlec-i...

the-gallop.comBob Kadlec: "I call it virological Russian roulette"And if you believe that, he has a half-billion-dollar air conditioner to sell you
Max Kozlov@maxkozlov.bsky.social

The effort was pushed by Pentagon official Robert Kadlec, who initially sought $1.9B from NIAID—roughly one-third of the institute’s budget. After internal pushback, talks narrowed to moving up to $700M of projects, potentially scaling up over 10 years.

He proffers 2 key questions facing the lab leak conspiracy: 1) its inability to predict the findings; & 2) the falsehood that it was censored early on & zoonosis was the preferred narrative all along. It's all backed up by data, analysis & receipts sadly lacking in gotcha garbage from Rand Paul etc

Timely reminder re. the truth behind these attacks. No, Dr. Fauci did not fund GoF research in Wuhan. No, the work we did in China not have caused COVID-19. Yes, as @gostin.bsky.social points out, this work is considered an important goal for pandemic prevention. www.medpagetoday.com/opinion/the-...

medpagetoday.comOpinion | Scapegoating Fauci Won't Protect Us From the Next PandemicIt's time to replace partisan grandstanding with evidence-based inquiry

Seems lab leak-sympathetic Relman needs to use Signal to have a conversation with a fellow scientist. This is the exact thing the lab leakers have been attacking me and others they call zoonati about & implying some sort of cover-up. Just shows what a non-story this whole thing really is...

Zach Hensel@zachhensel.bsky.social

It's particularly short-sighted for Relman to fall for cherry picking Fauci's diaries for conspiracy theories like this. The only reason Relman isn't near the center of conspiracy theories is because his just-asking-questions schtick is useful. Otherwise congressional hearings would be about this.

Tour-de-force debunk of FBI agent Bannan’s BS on the lab leak. So easy for people to post paranoid ramblings based on the hundreds of other lab leak conspiracies, but such hard work to go through all the inaccuracies and lay them out, with receipts, as @zachhensel.bsky.social has done so well here.

Zach Hensel@zachhensel.bsky.social

I have a post on @pubpeer.com up now that details most of the factual errors in this article: pubpeer.com/publications... My post is limited to the factual scientific content and doesn't critique the author's opinions or comments on sources beyond scientific manuscripts.

Unbelievable how erstwhile good scientists believe debunked conspiracies because they can’t get over the idea that China = bad. Relman is a true believer in this as well as the prob BS microwave/sound wave attacks. He’s prob half way there on the Jewish laser beams too after a couple of drinks!

Zach Hensel@zachhensel.bsky.social

Absolutely wild example of "data not shown" here from someone chiding others for their overconfidence.

The NIH just released a proposal that will apparently hide peer reviewers’ impact scores and percentiles from the research team, their institution, and NIH program officers. All the better to obscure how funding decisions will be made primarily via political review, I’m guessing.

Actually, the fact that more media vitriol was cast onto an academic than is being cast on the rapists in the Epstein Files (many of whom are ACTIVE academics) is EGREGIOUS. No one should be driven to their death in this way—even if every accusation were true—over academic misconduct.

Peter Daszak reposted

The lab leak theory is not a strict scientific theory, but mostly a narrative of different allegations Rand Paul is not only falsely accusing Fauci of creating SARS-CoV-2, he is endorsing a very stupid version of the origin theory that has incredibly strong evidence against it. Let me illustrate:
