A very favorable technology curve we should invest in wholeheartedly.

Solar has overtaken nuclear. A decade ago it supplied 1% of the world's power. In 2025 it met three quarters of global demand growth. Almost nobody saw it coming. I spoke to Jocelyn Timperley at BBC Future about why. www.bbc.co.uk/future/artic...

The study say's we will cross 1.5ยบC permanently in 2028 The C3S Temperature Trend Monitor agrees. (See apps.climate.copernicus.eu/global-tempe...) It currently projects January 2029 but before this year is out this will be showing as late 2028.

A new study identifies "a statistically significant doubling of the global warming rate during 2011โ€“25 (0.40โ€‰ยฐC per decade) compared to 1971โ€“2025 (0.20โ€‰ยฐC per decade)." It also claims that "the ensemble mean of 26 climate models fails to capture the observed doubling of the warming."

The more you know ... The 4-year running average for the global temperature anomaly is forecast to break the Paris Limit of 1.5ยฐC over the 1850-1900 pre-industrial baseline on November 17, 2026. We'll be covering the moment. Stay tuned!

Outside of the #Antarctic, temperatures have been above average for nearly all areas of our planet in the last three months. This is clear when looking at each latitude band. [Plot shows zonal-mean surface air temperature anomalies, where latitude = y-axis (not scaled by distance). Data: GISTEMPv4]

meanwhile, in reality....

Records come and records go. But this is one for the ages. The preliminary Nino 3.4 sea-surface temperature anomaly is now at a record 3.23ยฐC above the 1991-2020 baseline. This crushes the previous daily record set in 1982 by over 1.14ยฐC. The Climate 8-ball is looking up.

Imagine that. I wonder if there is any reason why this hurricane would develop so fast.

Oh my gosh, the best political video on YouTube just got updated after a decade and a half and it's still just perfect! It visualizes something that I've talked about a lot since the first video came out: The real problem is the billionaire class. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Gxl...

Iโ€™m not saying we should shed a tear for the financial impositions faced by multimillionaires. Itโ€™s just an illustrative point that the billionaires have *so much* money. They have so much more wealth than you imagined. This visualization has gotten much worse since 2012: youtu.be/QPKKQnijnsM?...

The latest Nino 3.4 sea-surface temperature (preliminary) is 2.78ยฐC above the 1991-2020 baseline, marking the 99th consecutive daily record, a full 0.79ยฐC higher than the previous daily record set in 1997. The Climate Casino is taking the OVER on 3.0ยฐC by the end of September.

And we have a new all-time record warm *absolute* temperature for the oceans, according to ERA5 (which goes back to 1940): August 21st likely marked the warmest Sea Surface Temperatures have been for the entire Holocene period. Should be major news!

Believe it or not, today might be as cool as it gets for future August 13ths. Itโ€™s hard not to be cynical when energy policymakers simply ignore the obvious warning signs.

Breaking News! Code UFB!!! August 13, 2026 is now the latest in the year a 17.0ยฐC global temperature has been recorded. Before 2026, the previous record was Aug. 7, 2024. The speed at which this Godzilla El Nino is taking hold of the global climate cannot be overstated.

does not look good

Prof. Eliot Jacobson@climatecasino.net

The Nino 3.4 sea surface temperature (preliminary) is at 29.65ยฐC, as of August 9th, the 72nd consecutive record daily high, on its way to crushing the previous record high of 29.82ยฐC, set November 17th, 2015. The Nino 3.4 anomaly currently sits at 2.77ยฐC above the 1991-2020 average.

A first year above 2C in the mid-2030s now looks plausible. 0.5C was first passed in 1980, 1.0C in 2010 and 1.5C in 2024. The 15-year trend runs at 0.42C per decade. The 2026 and 2027 points for the current El Nino are estimates. We're not remotely ready!

What could go wrong? A lot. No idea what Google is thinking (if they are) with this.

Here's another graphic demonstrating that the planet has already passed 1.5ยฐC above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial baseline, this time using monthly averages, with a prediction to pass 2.0ยฐC by late 2036.

RT @NatBullard Once a solar analyst, always a solar analyst - means I can geek out on "line goes like this" chart. 1 gigawatt โ†’ 1 terawatt: 20+ years 1 terawatt โ†’ 2 terawatt: 33 months 2 terawatt โ†’ 3 terawatt: 19 months incomparable work as always from @nicolasfulghum.bsky.social & @ember_energy

After increasing by more than 20% in the 2000s, CO2 emissions today are a mere 3% higher than they were in 2013. So, if CO2 emissions are flattening, why is atmospheric concentration growing unabated? The answer is in the persistent nature of atmospheric CO2. www.theclimatebrink.com/p/plateauing...

very frustrating that we know so much yet take so little heed.

At the end of the day, this visualization shows what's driving the rising risk of these dangerous heat waves. It's the human-caused burning of fossil fuels and the resulting increase in greenhouse gases. That's it. More climate change indicators: zacklabe.com/climate-chan...

"Something remarkable happened in April. For the first time in history, wind and solar generated more electricity than gas across the entire planet. Not in a country. Not in a region. Globally." Tons of great news here from Danny Kennedy (via @billmckibben.bsky.social's newsletter, which rules).

Three years ago tomorrow, I very nervously gave this speech. I knew my career as a TV journalist was dunzo, cooked, filleted, kaput the morning I wrote it. (Thanks to Kat insisting I go for it anyway.) The end is awfully prescient at this exact second, though. Big ups to Scott Pelley for fighting.

Catching a glimpse of the future here.

europe's green industrial policy Solar --> buy Chinese Batteries --> buy Chinese, also lots of gigafactories within home EVs --> partner up with Chinese firms within Europe to preserve what remains of its industrial ecosystem, retaining jobs, know-how, supply chain relevance

Nothing good to see here.

Breaking News! Code Yikes! The latest CERES data for March just dropped and the planet is now at its fastest rate of heating since January, 2024. Over the last 12 months Earth warmed at a rate of about 13.16 Hiroshimas per second, or about 1.14 million Hiroshimas per day.
