”Women hold up one half of the sky” turns out it’s the whole sky, horizon to horizon

Incredible gender difference in voting intention in Brazil.

Didn't expect Flavor Flav to be speaking out against rape, but he's seemed like a nice guy for a long time, so maybe I should have

Know their names: Scott Kretzschmar, Scott Norris, Diego Sarabia, Gillio Lopes, Winston Lee, Johnathan Newell and Matthew Ingalls #Cornell7 But also, everyone in the group chat, the administrators, university, and DA. SHAME.

I tried my feet at doing an all-out 5k a couple days ago, and it was one of the most painful experiences of my life, as every 5k attempt has been at every point in my life.

But this also applies to singing, and even being emotionally vulnerable or just conversationally uninhibited. That feeling of wanting to say something or tell someone how much they mean to you, but being too fearful to follow through is awful.

That's something I want to work on, to be emotionally strong. I recently ran a marathon. That was honestly easier than telling the people I care about most how much they really mean to me. But at least I'm aware, and I can try to exercise my emotional fitness, as well as my physical fitness.

But something keeps you going. Maybe it's the promise of glory; or an intellectual understanding that, while painful, you are safe and not actually injuring yourself. Either way, this mastery of mind over body is appealing to chase.

I like the idea of being as much in control of my body as possible. Basically any sport or art or otherwise skillful activity employs this. Running, climbing, and challenges in video games are appealing to me for this reason.

I did the best I have in years, 21:31, but that's still a long way off my best highschool time of 19:26. I'm gonna keep trying this fall until the snow or ice completely kills any chance I have this year.

It had been a while since I did an attempt, and you kind of forget just how badly it hurts. If you're doing it near maximum effort, you should get to the point where you are gasping for breath that you cannot satisfy. Your lungs and brain scream at you to stop, to relent.

A modern-day Stanislav Petrov story

Absolutely horrific: Thanks to a false intelligence "generated with the help of artificial intelligence," the US military nearly carried out an operation aboard a Chinese ship because the incorrect intelligence said it was carrying nukes, according to @cnn.com. edition.cnn.com/2026/09/18/p...

This is fascinating and sad to read. To anyone without hate in their heart, it’s a sweet story of young love. To these bigoted parents, it’s a moral transgression that MUST be corrected, even at the cost of estranging their son. open.substack.com/pub/pitt/p/h...

This year, I completed my first marathon. It took me a little under 4 hours 25 minutes, which is leagues away from the best in the world, but for my level of training and fitness, I did a really good job. It was only a few minutes after finishing that I told myself this and started crying.

I also cried watching Vollering. Maybe I understood that what I thought she felt was what I was also chasing with my then-upcoming marathon. I’ll certainly try it again next year, to be the best I can be.

That drive and dedication is the kind of thing I feebly imitate with my own sports performances. I don’t put a lot of pressure on myself, and ultimately it’s all for fun anyway, but I still want to do a good job and perform to a level I can be proud of.

Outstanding! I already got rid of my Regina Spektor album, now any songs by P!nk will follow suit. It sucks these people make good music, cuz I cannot listen to it after finding out they have any amount of support, direct or indirect, for a fucking genocide. Can’t abide it.

Thorgy was so correct when she called P!nk a "bad seed on this earth"

I actually do this

it's crucial to develop strong associations between something and each of your friends so that you get to go through life constantly reminded of the love and joy that surrounds you. little daily reminders about how much important people in your life have shaped you and how you have shaped them.

Kind of a beautiful perspective, actually

the more i integrate this truly and deeply into my worldview the more it changes my approach. being kind to others is essential because you're being kind to yourself. asking for help isn't selfish because youre helping yourself and theyre helping themselves too

Those lines poignantly illustrate that no matter how little fame or notoriety someone has, they are still important in their own corner of society. You can’t be everyone’s everything; you might not even be anyone’s everything, but you‘re definitely be a big part of someone’s life. You matter.

Everyone’s got their own circle of people, and all those make a massive web. Hopefully your circle is full of love. Anyway, I could gush ad nauseum but let’s leave it there. Friendship good.

In a new analysis by HRC, a whopping 1/3 of all young adults identify as LBTQ+. One in 43 are transgender. The queerest states are Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Alaska, and California. LGBTQ+ people continue to come out like never before. Subscribe to support our journalism

One of my brain worms makes it very hard to remember Matt Damon’s name and I can’t think of any name besides Mark Wahlberg, even though I know that’s the wrong one

I think the church’s stance on trans people is still not good (as far as I’ve heard), but it’s nice that the Pope genuinely displays some of the virtues espoused in the Bible. Someone actually being Christ-like, unlike these christofascist freaks who complain about him.

This an official Vatican photograph of Leo at Lampedusa, Italy - one of the world’s heaviest migrant sites - where he went this morning to pray for migrants who died at sea. This is after turning down the offer to come to the United States.

Over the past few days, I’ve made a PowerShell script to make downloading songs from YouTube a lot easier and more streamlined. I used to download them with yt-dlp and then painstakingly add tags and album art to them by hand. Some of the script is just using more of the options built into yt-dlp,

Then the script can rename the files with the track number and title, as well as delete the video and jpeg files that I don’t need anymore.

Anyway, it’s extremely satisfying to use the computer to make using the computer easier and less tedious. It used to be so much fucking work downloading music from YouTube, but now it’s gonna be a breeze, and I learned a lot and had fun on the way.

but it was still a problem just a few days ago. So, I can tell the script to use ffmpeg directly to turn the video files from yt-dlp into audio-only opus files. These files show no issues. I can also use ffmpeg to extract a video frame and turn it into a jpeg file for cover art.

To add the cover art to the opus file, I use a program called kid3, which has a command-line interface I can integrate into the script. I can also use kid3 to fix the date metadata from yt-dlp and make a solution to add track numbers to the opus files.

but a lot of it is also combining it with ffmpeg and kid3 to be even more useful. For instance, when using -x in yt-dlp to extract audio-only files from YouTube downloads, sometimes the resulting opus files would freeze up my computer when I tried to edit them. I have no idea why that happens,
