For those in Washington, DC, there will be a candlelight vigil tonight at 5:45 pm outside of the Embassy of Jordan for the victims of the Karak Church attack in Jordan, which claimed the lives of 8 people and injured 34 people.

St. Nicholas was the only house of worship destroyed on September 11. Its rebuilding reflects the spirit that carried New Yorkers through the days, months and years in the wake of the attack: a belief in each other, the hope of recovery, and a determination to begin again.

This afternoon, I joined Archbishop Elpidophoros and faith leaders at St. Nicholas National Shrine to mark the 25 years since the horrific terror attacks of 9/11 and reflect on the resilience of our city.

And it was actually reflected in polling- there was a broad *increase* in support for Muslim Americans after 9/11, because of signaling from leadership. But that was indeed short-lived, as what began as outbursts of Islamophobia became policy and political ideology over the next decade.

this is a lie. I'm not gonna provoke this person and their followers, but it absolutely did happen, including at the same time as pushback against Islamophobia, some of said pushback coming from very high up. Both things happened but the shared bond was real and existed & it's wrong to deny

really cannot be emphasized enough that the drafters of the birthright clause very much considered cases analogous to undocumented immigrants and *included them too*

I think it’s helpful to realize that worldviews- political, ideological, religious, etc- are primarily used by people to imbue events in the world with meaning, rather than explain why they happen. People can easily tolerate a lack of understanding, but no one can tolerate a lack of meaning.

This is really what I was getting at. Talking to people about politics is to realize that most of them have no clue about how political choices end up creating the realities around them. They just can't fill in the blanks between who they voted for and what happens next.

One thing that I’m convinced of: when you give groups of people permission to indulge in their darkest prejudices, you aren’t just revealing what was already there. Many also develop NEW prejudices. I think history and present experience both suggest people become Nazis, often abruptly.

U.S. intel also indicates that Iran retains about 75% of its pre-war inventories of mobile launchers & about 70% of its pre-war stockpiles of missiles, per a U.S. official. The regime has also been able to recover underground storage facilities & repair damaged missiles

What’s happening in Texas is indeed very concerning. It is tho reminiscent (and likely derived from) the organized Islamophobic activism that followed the “Ground Zero Mosque” controversy in 2010 and the included proposed bills in TN that would have banned Muslim ritual practice entirely.

See book below on that period; iow what’s happening in TX it is indeed as bad as it looks- but sadly is actually a replay of a previous movement (and tbh I don’t think it will get nearly as far this time).

A very good exchange with Péter Magyar in Brussels today. We discussed the steps necessary to unlock EU funds earmarked for Hungary, that are frozen due to corruption and rule of law concerns.

This strikes at the very heart of what above all makes America a great nation. That we would combine the ancient virtue of hospitality with the modern cause of freedom. This was our mission! To be “an asylum for mankind” (Paine, Common Sense). And we’ve abandoned it.
