In @ecorinews.bsky.social's newsletter, publisher Jo Detz announces joining a lawsuit vs. OpenAI & Microsoft for "essentially stealing our work." She writes: "it feels good to be standing with others against a trillion-dollar industry that shows little care for the work of writers and artists."

The lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft that @ecorinews.bsky.social has joined, alleges "defendants systematically and willfully stole copyrighted news articles produced by local publications [and] used that content to train and build commercial AI products...without permission or compensation."

I’m seeing people reacting by pointing out that he’s obviously wrong. I appreciate that, but it’s also a pointless exercise. The problem isn’t that he’s wrong. The problem is that this is normal in American politics — and it’s been normal for a while.

Brett Smiley was elected mayor of Providence in 2022 on a pledge to build more housing and get things done in Rhode Island's capital city. But there was one policy that Smiley wouldn't get behind: rent control. https://cnn.it/4yHoKQX

An interesting take on this story from a seasoned pro:

Lazy reporting and writing. Dateline New York. Guy didn’t come here or ask anyone local whether his premise was correct. Good chance this was pitched by the subject. Classic case of bad national reporting. So many issues with this piece.

Apparently following in @phileil.bsky.social’s steps. Rode my bike from Federal Hill out to Caratunk and back, catching a beautiful (if blinding) sunset on the way back.

If we had thought for one second that our dystopian metal death machines would be used for evil we never would’ve made them and then released videos showing how terrifying they are

"Block told The Journal in an email[,] 'A Costco board member running for governor should not be given the advantage of sharing this very popular news so close to election day. Helena Foulkes has abused her position on the board of Costco by politicizing their arrival in Rhode Island.'"

Took my father to the New Bedford Whaling Museum and got to witness the VERY flattering new statue of Herman Melville outside of the Seamen's Bethel!

I also want to note these signs in the bathroom at the Brookline Public Library. Libraries continue to practice empathy and neighborliness when many institutions do not.

We call this "Rhode Island Orientation." We try to arrange one of these encounters during the first calendar year of your residence here.

When I’d lived here only 6 months a guy at Scurvy Dog, drunk at 4 pm, monologued at me about his personal ranking of Farrelly brothers comedies for 30 minutes

The good news is that I have assembled a rough draft of the feature I've been working on for a while. The bad news is that it's about a bajillion words too long.

Grieving over coral reefs got me started on the practice that turned into Climate Anxiety Counseling: fury that a place where life lives in variety & complexity was reduced to a miserable scrap. There's work to do here, a lot of you are doing it, & I also want to make room for the sadness & anger.
