@mrjamesob.bsky.social bar human misuse the issues with AI are going to be we give AI broad access to computers, cloud infrastructure, financial systems, communications equipment, medical and research technologies. As AI becomes more autonomous and capable...

it may write and deploy code, discover vulnerabilities, persuade people, run other AI systems, conduct research, and act for long periods with limited human supervision. The danger arises if its objective is misaligned with human interests...

@mrjamesob.bsky.social did you know beavers build dams because the sound of running water triggers an instinct to stop the noise rather than control waterflow. Researchers played recordings on dry land; beavers piled mud and branches over the speakers, then stopped building when the noise stopped

I'm teaching my kids (6 and 4) to fight for their country @mrjamesob.bsky.social their country to them is their friends, family, community. Fighting for it is pushing for change by litter pick, volunteering etc. If we don't fight for change then things just get worse

NFTs are jut starting to mature @mrjamesob.bsky.social New UK Property (Digital Assets etc) Bil lets companies tokenise real IP (algorithms, trade secrets, proprietary processes) as immutable digital assets. Not cartoon monkeys but auditable IP that can be sold, licensed or used as collateral.

Sure, the world feels like it's going to shit but I've just spent the last 30 mins designing a potion for a slime monster. Nose bogies 1 💧 of slime Ear wax Spit bubbles Vomit Kids are the best 🥰

@mrjamesob.bsky.social I hear the doubts. I hear the anger. I hear the voices saying, Why should I fight for a country that has failed me? That has made it too hard to earn a good living, to buy a home, to feel like the promises of the past still mean anything. 1/n

7/n If you abandon this land today, what will be left tomorrow? The future is not written. But I know this: It will not belong to those who run. It will belong to those who stand, who fight, who refuse to let their home become just another forgotten nation in history.

5/n Every great nation, every free people, have had their struggles, their betrayals, their moments of despair. But no revolution, no independence, no lasting change ever came from those who turned their backs when the moment of decision arrived. This is that moment.

6/n You may not fight for the government. You may not fight for politicians. But fight for your neighbors. Fight for your family. Fight for the right to live on your feet, not under someone else’s boot. If the system is broken, then we take this fight and make sure we survive to fix it.

3/n A future dictated by others, not by us. Do not mistake survival for freedom. A life lived under foreign occupation is not a life lived on your terms.

4/n It is a life where your language may be silenced, where your history may be rewritten, where your right to speak, to dream, to build something better—disappears. We do not fight because our country is perfect. We fight because it is ours.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social I hear the doubts. I hear the anger. I hear the voices saying, Why should I fight for a country that has failed me? That has made it too hard to earn a good living, to buy a home, to feel like the promises of the past still mean anything. 1/n

2/n I understand that doubt. But I tell you this: If not you, then who? If we walk away now, if we surrender—not just to an enemy at our gates, but to the hopelessness in our own hearts—then what remains? A land that was once ours, now ruled by those who never shed blood or sweat for it.

Becky Burke of Book Island (a picture book publisher in the UK founded by my fellow Tokarczuk translator Greet Pauwelijn) was "detained" by ICE at the Canadian border on 2/28. Her father asked that her story be shared in case someone can help her. He writes:

It's alright @mrjamesob.bsky.social I thought Starmer did good but after that appalling treatment towards Zelenskyy earlier, the UK should now rescind the second state visit offer and stand firmly with Europe and Ukraine. No more playing both sides, we need to choose and we need to choose Europe.

Kemi's speech @mrjamesob.bsky.social simply pulls on emotions (fear; anger, definance) and this hyperbole will stir a sub-group to be unhappy and want change. It's poor rabble rousing James, provoke emotions and plant the seed of anger/distrust in the status quo

This is what should be on every front page right now. What's happening in the US right now is an illegal power grab by a private citizen. IT'S A COUP. It's a digital coup. It's Musk who's leading it. The consequences are terrifying. And it's coming for us next. 1/ open.substack.com/pub/broligar...

#Voices4Victory #ProudBlue This is what I’ve been afraid of since I heard about Project 2025. I knew that it would be a problem if nobody enforced the laws, but to hear George Conway discuss it makes it real. Again, nobody is coming to save us. It’s up to all of us. WE ALL MUST GET INVOLVED.

Renewable electricity production is the cheapest. Yet the price consumers pay is linked to fossil fuel production prices. Uncouple those. Let people see the real benefits of renewable energy with the option of cheaper bills and then turbo charge the greenification of our energy

@mrjamesob.bsky.social I could be wrong but I've always assumed "preppers" getting ready for societal collapse largely overlap with trump voters. Big if, but IF that's true then are are they aware they are likely self-fulfilling this prophecy with trump or do they think he will prevent collapse?

Heard from inside the National Cancer Institute, part of NIH — travel through April is canceled. Purchasing with government card is frozen. All public comms are off limits. Can’t even submit abstracts to future meetings. Can’t submit *manuscripts* for publication. All hiring activity frozen. Fuck.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social my dad would regularly tell all of us 4 kids (2 boys, 2 girls), the youngest (girl) was his favourite. We're all adults and it's still the case. We all find it funny and take no issue with it. As a parent of 2 kids now myself, I honestly can't see how I could have a favourite.
