New paper with @snaildit.bsky.social❗ You can use paralogs to reduce long-branch attraction! This will be especially helpful when there are no extant taxa that can be sampled to break up these branches. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

As I look back on another semester of teaching Evolutionary Biology with @phylieu.bsky.social, I think what stands out the most was the student who, in earnest, told us he had a question about Harvey-Weinstein Equilibrium.
@sinkingdiatom.bsky.social and I started doing "Album" Recommendation Friday" a few years ago as a way for students to sort of know us outside the context of our Evolutionary Biology course. Today was our final rec and so I decided to share the list here: 1/3
Very cool stuff!
I wrote this about finding the optimal discrete character model structure. I hope this will be useful for empiricists. The main point is that relying only on the package default models is bad and can have nasty consequences or parameter estimates and ASR. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

The strain on scientific publishing: we set out to characterise the remarkable growth of the scientific literature in the last few years, in spite of declining growth in total scientists. What is going on? direct.mit.edu/qss/article/... A 🧵 1/n #AcademicSky #PhDchat #ScientificPublishing #SciPub
