A neat thing with historical Landsat data - you can go back to 25th of September 1983 and see the wispy high altitude clouds over North Dakota around 17:00 UTC, roughly 3-4 hours before the false alarm. On the left, the missile fields of Malmstrom overlaid on Landsat image from 26th of September.

Today in 1983 in Moscow, just past midnight, 44 year-old Lt. Col. Stanislav Petrov’s calm decision that a satellite warning of the launch of 5 US Minuteman ICBMs was a false alarm—based on “a funny feeling in my gut”—may have averted a catastrophic nuclear war. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/inatl...

Rationalists should not be controlling policy for these decisions. AI safety is a concern, but it is far from an extinction level issue. While some may consider AI to be an all powerful tool, it is remarkably stupid in ways that benefit defense.

I'm back, I missed you all. Since this is an important subject I know too much about, here's a 🧵 explaining that AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult. I don't think these people should make policy. (1/?) (alternative title: Time For Some Cult Theory)

While the pasty incels who work the federal agencies continue to churn out feeble, bloodless AI pastiches of Axis propaganda, here’s how a living breathing artist powerfully invokes design history. This is by illustrator Emily K in South Philly, a free poster-sized download on her website: →

Hegseth is an abuser pure and simple. This is removing protections for all women in service.

The headline here is “Hegseth announces changes that will protect domestic abusers in the military.” Even though this is incontestably true, no news organization will use this headline, because telling the truth is deemed impermissible if the truth hurts the right too much

Hegseth: "We are overhauling an inspector general process that has been weaponized, putting complainers and poor performers in the driver seat. We are doing the same with the equal opportunity policies. No more frivolous complaints, no more anonymous complains ... no more walking on eggshells."

This is trans rights, too. There is no viable position for the Democrats other than “trans rights are human rights.” Trying to triangulate a position where you throw trans people under the bus “just a little” to woo swing voters only feeds the right’s argument that trans people are a threat 1/x

In case y'all missed it - Utah Republicans ordered a study on transgender healthcare, expecting it to come back unsupportive. Instead, it found that trans youth care was safe and effective, and that transgender youth need it. Whoops. www.sltrib.com/news/politic...

sltrib.comUtah lawmakers’ own study found gender-affirming care benefits trans youth. Will they lift the treatment ban?The Utah Legislature's own newly-released study found that gender-affirming care benefits trans youth. Now, will lawmakers lift the treatment ban?

But like seriously, we need airstrikes on day 1. CECOT is an affront to human rights and we have a responsibility to use the next administration to tear their regime down.

Any LGBTQ-supportive news outlets is free to republish my article by the way. It's ridiculous this isn't getting any more attention.

it's also timed the day after HHS offically published their proposed rule banning trans care from ACA EHBS www.madycast.com/p/proposed-h... Nancy Mace was also recently calling RFKjr to... do something... about estrogen

It's a sad day when CISA is requesting you email them a password protected document with your sensitive information. So many jokes, so little time, none of them actually funny in this absolute hellscape.

Every time someone starts talking to me about DEI I’m just going to look at them confused and ask why they are so obsessed about the Dutch East India company. 😆

An EEOC admin. judge sent a fiery all-department email this AM alleging: 1. Trump's exec orders & instructions to target private citizens with them are illegal. 2. the judge had sent an earlier email with a similar tone yesterday that later vanished from their sent folder & colleagues' inboxes.

The Trump administration is scrubbing the CDC’s website of documents on reproductive rights issues, sexual health, intimate partner violence, and more. I'm trying to save them. You can find the deleted docs at cdcguidelines.com - I'll be adding more over the weekend.

Reminder that trans people are 2x as likely to have military service compared to cis people. The vast majority of active trans service members are NCOs and mid level Officers representing over $18 billion in military investment.

The fact they created this is bringing hard lavender scare vibes.

The OPM (federal government HR) created a snitch line for anyone to report DEI in the federal government. The email is DEIAtruth@opm.gov It would be a shame if the email was flooded. I want to be clear. The trans community is absolutely definitely not well known as tech savvy people.

🚨Trump’s Day One Executive Orders reportedly include directives (which will likely take time to implement) on pronouns, prison inmates, and passports. But nothing, for now, affecting the ability of trans Americans to obtain medical treatment.

I am extremely disappointed and angered by Ohio Republicans' anti-trans veto override. The anti-trans hate that they have both fallen in with and, now, encouraged is created out of nothing to give them an "other" to attack and to continue their efforts to control others.

ohiocapitaljournal.comOhio Senate overrides DeWine vetoes on trans youth gender-affirming care and local tobacco bans - Oh...The Ohio Senate voted to override two of Gov. Mike DeWine’s vetoes Wednesday — one blocking gender-affirming care for trans youth and the other lets the state have the final say on tobacco laws.
