Listening to Destiny of the Republic and how James A. Garfield, one of the US Presidents no one hears about, was actually the coolest fucking guy to ever be President or just about any politician ever Knowing he was assassinated by the absolute weirdest freak stroke of luck just sucks in retrospect

Like, people in the US hear how nice Carter was. Garfield personally hid an escaped slave, fought for abolition, and then for equal rights after the civil war. People know Roosevelt fought briefly in the dumb Spanish American War, Garfield personally lead a spectacular victory for the Union

People might've heard how smart Kennedy or Obama seemed in office, Garfield was a professor of both mathematics and ancient languages at a respected university. Like, hearing how cool and qualified this man was, especially compared to politicians today is just depressing 😭

I'd buy a Dragon Age Inquisition remaster. I'd buy that Mass Effect game we got a leaked trailer of. I'm sure someone could have made these things work, instead the studio gets shut down to no benefit for anyone. The games industry is suffering from a wave of incompetence not seen since the 80s

That means pushing Apple to make it easier to put games on all those Macs that get sold That means trying to support alternative app stores for Android and IOS as frankly the default ones are nightmares for friendliness and how much you can charge for your game and etc.

Imagine if every iPhone owner could both play, and knew about, your game instead of it being buried under app store crap, and you could charge a fair price for it Then remember that Myst outsold Doom in the 90s. It happened once upon a time, perhaps it can again

The wave of money going into gaming after high COVID lockdown sales is drying up and taking tens of thousands of jobs with it But a good lesson to learn is, all this was incredibly stupid money from people that don't work or know things for a living to begin with

Gaming is a specialized, and today overcrowded industry, and the way to grow it is not taking money from ignorants that want money for nothing The best path to growth again I can see is growing the amount of people that can play games

just to offer a perspective I've not seen much of On Here: I work in codev, I'm not in the "core team". I'm an employee of a codev studio. I am a full time employee with all the legal benefits that entails. I also have better job security than I might at a studio. It's pretty great. I like my job!

Star Wars: Galactic Racer was made by a core team of 75 people. "What we wanted to do was keep that core small, smaller than perhaps you might have done in the past, and scale capacity and capability with what we call distributed development." https://bit.ly/4hT02qg

Mass Effect 1-3 coming out in the span of five years is so crazy. Is there a clearer example of how fucked development cycles have gotten than looking at BioWare’s output in the aughts?

Former BioWare Senior Writers Mary Kirby (Varric, Vivienne, Lucanis) and Sylvia Feketekuty (Liara, Josephine, Emmrich) and Sarah Hayward (Former BioWare Cinematic Director) have found a home at North Mist with many others in our network.

Very heavy news as our former studio, BioWare closes its doors today. It was a formative place for many. However, many former BioWare devs are scattered around the industry. Find them, support them. Like, follow, comment and help us prove there is still support for the types of games we make!

For all those suffering an AI slop wave: Deviant Art, where I used to post photos as a hobby, was ruined years ago by AI slop. But ArtStation (ironic with who the owner is) got through and still hosts mostly interesting art. May your fortune be the latter.

I’m Nessa! I’m a video game writer/narrative designer with 6+ years of freelance experience on 10+ shipped titles, including Borderlands 4 and Star Wars: Galactic Racer ✨ I’m looking for new projects, so if you’re looking for narrative on your project, check out my website: www.nessacannon.com

I'm feeling pressured to write emails to new contacts like I'm writing for AI, because sometimes I get nonsense AI responses similar not knowing how many R's are in Strawberry from places I'd theoretically like a good response from Isn't the future supposed to be better than the past?

For me it's the sound fx that really sells this scene above 99.9% of games. It's weird to play something as enormous budget and gorgeous as say Red Dead 2 and then notice all the sound that isn't there, and it's hardly alone in the AAA space

Andy Kelly@ultrabrilliant.xyz

Been teaching myself Unreal and built this moody office scene while learning the basics of lighting, VFX, camera control, animation, cinematics, and blueprints. Wanted to make it feel convincingly cluttered and lived-in, which involved placing 600+ props by hand. Sound up for maximum atmosphere.

The Witcher 3 was an amazing experience on release, and all the jank like silent and vfx less whales leaping out of the water, contentless and half finished feeling map areas, and poor difficulty scaling weren't nearly enough to detract from that.

But if I wanted to re-experience the game I'd happily pay to fill in the jank. As much as feeling vaguely let down by a free update feels absurd, a lighting and material update to the original does more to remind me of what I'd happily pay for rather than motivate me to replay the game.

Please celebrate my birthday with me by reading my article and sharing it! I'm trying to pay down medical debt and the tips really help, so the more people who see it, the better!!

doctober@docseuss.bsky.social

My birthday is Weds. I'll be celebrating it entirely alone cause I'm disabled. This is also the anniversary of some pretty significant trauma in my life, so I ain't doing too good. If you would be so kind as to share my article, and, if possible, tip to help me with medical debt, I'd be grateful.

Losing your job you did well on because your narcissist boss believed they were the God of game design and made a failure despite your efforts has to be one of the worst feelings. Even worse if your failure of a boss kept theirs. Best of luck devs.

Here's a steam key for Ambrosia Sky! First come, first serve. H2BV8-EMROE-K2CTO Ah, but I'm feeling cryptic. That code won't work as-is... The key is to think like a Scarab.

Terry Gilliam's "Brazil", a comedic dystopia where a surveillance state hunts down a rogue AC repair man operating without a license, was not on my bingo card for becoming reality. Yet here we are, living through that and Idiocracy simultaneously

Public Service Announcement: Intel ARC GPUs do no seem to work with AMD IGPUs, if you've got an IGPU as such on your desktop CPU I wouldn't bother with an ARC graphics card unfortunately

I find the AI "debate" on all sides tiring, as it's hard to overstate how overvalued AI companies are right now. If the AI companies are over valued, that means the AI hype, and fear, and "moderate thinking person's" blah blah blah are overblown. Pointing at a paper tiger and screaming.

Making LLMs linearly bigger does not make them exponentially "more right", a hypothesis disproven years ago. There's no singularity, no Skynet, no monster under the bed. It's all haphazard BS from people that benefit financially from serving such.

"AI" will change the world on the same trajectory the Internet did. Paced, with ups and downs and around. Currently we're in trading frenzy approaching the 2001 crash I'm sorry for those fired by a manager that assumed "AI is magic". If it makes you feel better they might lose their job soon enough

95% of "AI" usage will end up the same. Run Siri on your iPhone, run your AI debugger on your company issued 192GB laptop, cheat on your English essay by running an open source model on your school issued laptop. The 20% better a GPU with it's own nuc plant will do won't be worth the cost.

"But AI will go all Terminator and" let's stop right there. AI cannot make itself exponentially smarter exponentially faster. The actual math reasons boil down to "entropy shows up in math itself" or even simpler "you always solve the easiest problems first, so problems always get harder".

"But surely there's power users?" Let me tell you what they're doing. They're buying Mac Minis and AMD AI Pros and RTX Sparks and running everything themselves. They're not paying usage fees, it's cheaper to pay for the electricity themselves.

The dream of Big, Networked computers divying up compute on demand has been around since the 1980's, and never made sense. "The Cloud" is used for delivering shared storage and security checks, local networks did the same for decades longer. You want compute power? Buy it yourself.

Who has so much demand they can't meet it? Google bought some from Space X. And Google will give you free "tokens" across all their products, and a lot of it So Google is giving money to, you. They pay Space X for capacity they give you for free, and this is the "insatiable demand" for data centers

What happens when they try charging for any of this? Who's going to pay money for a crap workout suggestion from their Fitbit when they can get the functionality they want without a subscription? Who's going to pay a usage rate to an AI "programmer" that can't make a functional weather app?

Meta and Space X have such low demand they are selling cloud capacity to others and being valued at trillions for it. Note they aren't selling this AI "capacity" to consumers themselves, and they could just put a Chinese model on and do so. So it makes them more money to sell this to... who?

Where's the unmet demand that hundreds of billion$ in data centers are meeting? I vibe coded a weather app a few weeks ago to just to see, and was handed enough free AI to find neither Gemini, Claude, nor both together could create a functional one.

I've noticed a trend, drivers on highways going 10mph (16kph) slower than the speed limit with their hazards on, all staring intently at their phones. Like they're being polite about it. I don't like this version of 2026 and would like to select a different one please

For the real-time ray tracers: the more papers I see explaining how to overcome Restirs inherent problems the more I realize the weaknesses of screenspace as a fundamental model for ray reuse Forget tracing in pixel space, maybe just splat probes in world space and store locality in hashgrids?

Detail could be a unified screenspace directional occlusion pass. Then gather from valid world space probe paths for valid angles. Temporal "tracking" becomes easy. Spatial tracking is just world space, yaaay. Shift the probes a tiny bit "away" from the mesh and lod is solved.
