Went orchid hunting in the Langwarrin Reserve yesterday, saw some. Most are tiny, and as our guide told us, see the leaves, see the orchid. Native orchids are terrestrial, unlike the ones normally grown in pots which are epiphytes. And also caught a wallaby hightailing it out of our path!

The Great Koala National Park is here! It will protect over 178,000 hectares of koala habitat from logging on the mid-north coast of NSW, on Gumbaynggirr & Dunghutti Country. This is the greatest conservation win for the forests of NSW in decades.👇 youtube.com/shorts/AoxQ6...

Mum announced in the middle of her 90th birthday celebration lunch that, from today, she's turning over a new leaf. When we asked what the 'new leaf' was, she said, 'I'll be doing exactly as I please from today onwards.' I don't know whether to be proud or afraid... 😅

I call on the Australian government to #RaiseTheRate of all support payments to a living wage. This would be the single most effective way to lift the productivity, quality of life, and well-being of the whole country. #CommitToALivingWage

When Australia faces its biggest challenges, we turn to our universities. But are we funding them like the national asset they are? Our latest report compares Commonwealth funding for public universities and private schools, and reveals a striking imbalance. Read more: betterunis.nteu.au/postcards

A recent report quoted 3.7 million people live in poverty in Oz. That is disgusting for a rich nation. Unemployment Jobstart allowance remains below the poverty line. Inexcusable for a Labor govt.

A long walk, ~14km along the Maribyrnong river today. Following along the loop of the river - it’s so soothing. I love taking photos of the city, and remembering when it used to be only a few tall buildings . Look at it now!! #Melbourne

Young theatre-makers are acting for 50 hours straight in a ‘slightly bonkers’ livestreamed act-a-thon

theguardian.comYoung theatre-makers are acting for 50 hours straight in a ‘slightly bonkers’ livestreamed act-a-thonAustralia’s oldest youth-owned arts company – whose alumni include Hilary Bell and Trevor Ashley – marks its 50th year with the theatrical endurance fundraiser * Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email Can young theatre-makers perform for 50 hours straight, fuelled by pizza, good vibes and a history of ramshackle, roll-yer-sleeves up grit and determination? That’s the challenge this weekend for the kids at Australia’s oldest youth-owned-and-led arts company, Shopfront Arts Co-op, as they revive the 50-hour act-a-thon fundraiser that helped keep the Sydney company going through tough times in the late 1970s and 1980s. The act-a-thon is a slightly bonkers theatrical endurance event (which will be livestreamed for the first time) that captures the scrappy and heroic nature of the Carlton company’s history, now celebrating 50 years. Young artists will perform live in one-hour blocks from works they have devised themselves. “I’ll be performing in the 3.30am slot,” says Nicole Pignon, who first performed at Shopfront at 13 and is now in her mid-20s. “I don’t know what I’m doing yet but I’ll figure it out!” Which feels about right. Shopfront has been figuring stuff out since it was formed in 1976 by two theatre directors, Errol Bray and Garry Fry. Among its alumni are playwrights Hilary Bell and Andrew Upton, and actors Jay Laga’aia, Trevor Ashley and Paul Capsis. It was a different world to some extent. Back in ’76, kids were being warned about becoming square-eyed watching the colour TVs only just introduced to Australia. The prime minister was Malcolm Fraser. The Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act was about to be passed. Abba’s Fernando topped the charts for 14 weeks straight. And in Carlton, then a working-class suburb in south-west Sydney, theatre-loving kids were chasing their various dreams. Continue reading...
