you can tell when I’ve written the Weekender intro because I always try to sneak a nice little surprise link in there that goes to a dad rock song

KARMA SURE IS A BITCH HUH

The New York Times@nytimes.com

From @theathletic.com: Mere inches separated the Yankees from having a potentially season-saving moment. But a fan's interference meant a home run was overturned, and the Rays eliminated the Yankees to advance to the American League Championship Series.

got taken out by a true stomach flu this weekend complete with a fever that briefly hit 104 degrees and lemme tell you: being that sick sucks real bad

I’m better now though I can still only eat saltines and broth and have spent the past 24 hours dreaming of pizza

kind of depressing to realize how many stories that I wrote in my 15+ years in journalism have simply disappeared because of the vagaries of digital media

I’m watching Cape Fear (1991) and it’s impossible to divorce this from the Simpsons episode parodying it at this point

Watching part 2, which is so far largely about the revitalization of NYC post-9/11. the filmmakers have been working on this for some time, and it’s kind of wild to hear about things like Bloomberg-era rezonings with what I imagine wasn’t a ton of distance from those events

OK there’s a part about artists in SoHo in the 1970s so I can only hope for Ric Burns’s take on indie sleaze as part of the discussion around the rise of Brooklyn as a cultural center

When did vaping indoors become something people feel emboldened to do? I’m at a fancy bakery in a tiny upstate town and a guy vaped while waiting in line, which is a new one for me!

sorry to the Mets fans who will have to deal with obnoxious Baltimoreans* doing the “OH!” bit during the Star-Spangled Banneer at tonight’s game * I am the obnoxious Baltimorean

what a day to have an appointment with my psychiatrist and get a reminder about getting a mammogram. like sure I’m already anxious today, let’s just pile it on

confronted with a cheerful influencer’s face-to-camera “I bet you didn’t know this about 9/11” video and honestly, maybe the internet was a mistake

and this is how I learned that I lived one block outside of the disaster area in the 2 years immediately after 9/11

The City Reporter@thecityreporter.nyc

40,000 young people lived in Lower Manhattan and western Brooklyn — what officials designated as the “disaster area” — during 9/11, said Dr. Matt Karwowski, chief of research at the WTC Health Program. (via @healthbeat.org)

(I lived at Sullivan and Bleecker from Aug 2001-Aug 2003, I genuinely didn’t realize the “disaster area” went that far north)

I’m Amy, I live in NYC, l work for a large transit agency here, and I have a cat. I love every moment of “House of Jealous Lovers” by the Rapture but i *really* love that it kicks into nearly a minute of funky cowbell at the 13-second mark. It’s really a god-tier song.

John Moe@johnmoe.bsky.social

Hi, I'm John Moe, a writer and podcast maker in Saint Paul. I am married with three mostly grown kids and two nice dogs. I like in "Misunderstood" when Tweedy throws in extra syllables on "Take the guitar player for a ride". Would you like to introduce yourself with a small song moment you like?

I really try not to be a cranky person about trends and fads in NYC but seeing a line wrap around a block for frozen yogurt does grind my gears ngl

Curious about the ways we prep for @nationals.com season? ⚾ Our Planning and Performance team forecasts game attendance and monitors platform crowding and service frequency for every game. They also work with Rail Operations to recommend when to send extra trains after the game. 🧵

NEW FROM ME: The Great Delegalization. There are now (almost certainly far more than) 1M immigrants who were protected from deportation on Jan 20, 2025, and no longer are. It’s the result of a problem that’s been building for 30 years—& now only Congress can fix. www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...

I got to inform some friends today that Spike Jonze directed the music video for “Praise You” and that made my 16-year-old self so happy

look look we made the Weekender a cute little video (but BE NICE TO MY NICE COLLEAGUE)

if you are having a terrible day may I recommend eating an ice cream sandwich (of the plain, vanilla ice cream chocolate wafer variety) to make it less terrible
